Hi Sue,
I think all roads lead to me as the cause of this mystery. I will lick my calf over and
try to clear my errors.
The family bible of David and Elizabeth Cagle {my gggrandparents}, shows son by the name
of William R, which is William Robert, named after his grandfather Robert Cagle. This is
a practice of this family. I am named after my two granddaughters.
William R Cagle married Martha Ann Brewer, who is the sister of my ggrandfather , Josiah
Brewer. Josiah Brewer married William R Cagle's sister, Martha Ann Cagle.
In the 1870 census for Decatur County Tn ,William R Cagle and Martha are listed with their
children, so they both lived past the Civil War.
The military file on William Cagle indicates he is from Decatur County and he is listed
only as William Cagle until he is taken prisoner at Shelbyville Tn. Thereafter all the
prison files has him as W.C. Kagle with the same rank, company, reg't, date that he
was taken prisoner and location. This the William C Cagle that died and is buried in
Ohio.
In the 1850 census for Carroll County, which is located next to Decatur County,
living near David Cagle is John Cagle who has a son William F, age 12. Also, in Decatur
County, in old Henry Cagle's house is a William age 18.
If we are to believe the census and military files the William F is eliminated. This
leaves the William with old Henry.
Maybe someone has researched this line and can take my fumble and run with it.
Bill
