Hi all!
Was recently doing a "share & compare" with another Cagle researcher and
she pointed out that I had her William C. Cagle (b. 4 Apr 1833), son of John
David Cagle & Elizabeth C. Baugh, as still alive in Decatur Co., TN in the
1870 census:
The 1870 Census for Brodies Landing, Decatur Co., TN:
#57/57
Cagle, William, 35, m, w, Farm Labor, 0/300, TN
Martha A [Brewer], 35, f, w, Keeping house, NC
Perlinia E J, 13, f, w, At home, TN
Nancy A, 11, f, w, At home, TN
Martha J, 9, f, w, At home, TN
Mary F, 8, f, w, At home, TN
This conflicts with other information which shows that he died at Camp
Chase, OH during the (un)Civil War. The family members in the above census
all fit with William C. and his known wife and children.
Here is what I have on William from yet another researcher:
On 16 Dec 1862 brothers, William and Isaac and Josiah Brewer, who later
married their sister, Martha Ann, enlisted in Co. A, 51 Tennessee Infantry
CSA at Henderson Station in Henderson County, TN for a period of one year.
On muster rolls of Jan., Feb., Mar. and Apr. 1863, he is on detached
service at the Hospital in Shelbyville, TN. While in the hospital, he was
captured by the Federals on 28 Jun 1863. On 17 July 1863 he was
transferred to Nashville, TN. He was moved to military prison in
Louisville, KY on 19 July 1863. On 26 July 1863 he was moved to Camp Chase,
OH, where he died on 31 Dec 1863 due to pneumonia. He is buried in grave
#686 located about 1/3 of a mile South of Camp Chase, OH.
I'm REALLY confused here but am thinking that it's probably that someone
got their William Cagles confused. Any help in sorting this out would be
greatly appreciated!!
Best,
SueB
