Lee, thank you for posting Sallie's obituary. I did not have a
copy. Sallie was my husband's great aunt; his Great
Grandfather being "Pink" Cagle. Yes, our Mississippi Cagles were a
colorful family.
A letter from her GrGrGranddaughter, Dede Freece, Boise, Idaho states
:
"She was a neat woman who lived a unique life. In 1887 at the
age of 16 she fell
in love with Alfred Nash Curtis. Grandma Crafton said that her father
did not approve
of this because: (1) she was too young and had not finished school,
(2) he was a
Methodist and the Cagles were STRONG Baptist. But she was determined
to be with
him so she devised a plan. Every time she left the house she would
put on layers of
clothes under her regular clothes. This way she could sneak them out
of the house.
Nash and Sally eloped to Texas. When her father, Charles found out he
became en-
raged and took off after them, in hot pursuit. He chased them across
two states before
giving up and returning home to Mississippi."
"After her first husband's death Sallie eventually returned to
Mississippi where she
married Charles Crafton. They eventually moved to Alabama." [about
1907]

I found the following obit of Sallie Ford Cagle Curtis Crafton. She
is the daughter of Charles Hughey and Margaret Elvira Richardson
Cagle. She was born 11 Nov 1870 in Louisville, Winston County, MS
and died 20 Jan 1965.
Winston County Journal, Louisville, Mississippi 1965
Funeral Services for Mrs Sallie Cagler Crafton, 94, of Springville,
Alabama were held January 23 at Norwood Chapel with the Rev Tally
McGowan officiating. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.
She died at Blount Memorial Hospital on 20 January after sufferingt
a stroke a few weeks before.
Mrs Crafton was born in Louisville in 1870 and lived here until just
before World War I. She was last of the large family of pioneer
settlers, Charles H and Margaret Richardson Cagle, who came overland
from the Carolinas in 1852 to join their own parents who had found
new homes in this "Settlement of many springs". Her only brother,
the late Colonel James Pinkney (Uncle "Pink") Cagle was the oldest
of the children.
Early in life, she married the late Albert Nash Curtis and went with
him in his travels as Methodist Missionary in the midwest, where he
died from an emergency appendicitis operation in the wilderness.
The widow, with three small children, came back to Louisville and
some years later married Mr C H Crafton. Six more children were
born in the family before they moved to Alabama.
Mrs Crafton was a talented musician and an early advocate of folk
music. Seh was always ready to entertain any age group and only a
few weeks before her death played the piano accompanyment to her own
songs.
Mrs Crafton is survived by six daughters and two sons, Mrs Letha
Curtis Russell of Birmingham, Mrs Mary Curtis Wilson of Robertdale,
Alabama, Mrs Grace Crafton Moss of Gasden, Alabama, Mrs Trudie
Crafton Leslie and Mrs Elizabeth Crafton Dickert ofSpringville,
Alabama, Mrs Margaret Crafton Wesson of Meridan, Charlie Crafton of
Springville and Walter Crafton of Birmingham; also 12 grandchildren,
22 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren. Also, Mrs
Archie Curtis, widow of Mrs Crafton's only son by her first
marriage, is a wedll known bujsiness woman in Louisville and there
are scores of other relatives in Louisville and Winston County.
I have additional information regarding this family for those of you
interested in this line.
