Earl,
These are my notes for Henry Cagle, b. 16 Dec 1809, Allen County, KY
In Vol L (1955-56) of the Missouri Historical Review, an article is published by
John F Spilman, 1855-1951, of Lawrence Co., MO, regarding the Sylvan School in
Lawrence Co., MO which traces the history of education in the county from the
1840s. An excerpt from the article, taken from pp.30-31 and 42-43, follows
below; note reference to Lindsey and Henry Cagle: History of Sylvan School,
Lawrence Co., MO. School district number 3, township 27, range 28, was
organized in 1852. A meeting of the voters of the township drew up a petition
to the County Court asking that the township be organized for school purposes.
It was then called District 2 School, Township 5.
The first enumeration list ever made in the district was made in Sep 1853 by
John Spilman, O.P. Mann and N C Spilman, and was as follows:.............."Lenzy
Cagle"..........
The old Records show in 1854 at a called meeting of the voters of the district,
it was ordered that a tax be levied to purchase a stove. The amount was $25.
The first free school was taught by J J Spilman. His certificate showed:
Orthography, reading, writing and arithmetic. The list of teachers includes the
following:...................."Henry Cagle in 1848".........Later, Henry moved
to California and was enumerated in the US Federal Census of 1850, 1860, 1870
and 1880.
1850 US Fed Census Muc Springs, Eldorado CA, 14 Oct, Enumerated by C S

(Note: This is the last census that included Henry Cagle; the 1890 Census was
lost and he was not listed in the1900 Census. Martha Ann Hewlett Cagle is said
to have moved to California but, returned prior to her death to Verona, MO;
however, she was never listed on any census records while living in
California.)

Hello Fellow Cagle list members,
For those who don't know me my name is Earl David Cagle Sr. I started the Cagle
list in 1998 and I hope it is still going strong. Due to some health problems I
signed off the list for the past few years. I am doing much better know and
decided to join the list again.
My wife Diana, and I are retired and living in St. Petersburg, Flordia. We enjoy
the nice weather except for some cool days once in awhile, like today.
I am back working on my genealogy again. I have a question about Henry Cagle b.
12-16-1809. It is said that he settled in Lawrence Co; Mo; with hisfather,
mother, brothers and sisters. There is a bit of a puzzle about him. I show he
married Martha Ann Hewlett, on 10-11-1856 in Lawrence Co; Mo. However I can't
find them in the 1860 census for Lawrence Co;Mo.I researched some old Cagle
archives and some people say he went to California and died there in the 1850's.
Some peoples research on WorldConnect show this also and a few show he married
in 1846. How could he marry in 1856 in Missouri and end up in California?
I hope everyone is doing well and I know I have missed alot on the list. Perhaps
someone can catch me up on any new information.
Kind Regards,
Earl
