Dear Earl,
if your E-mail adress gives you away, you are only one year younger than
I am, but oh so much wiser when it comes to Cagle research. Frankly, I
am getting just a little discuraged and thought I seek your advise if
you can spare a few moment. I live in Missouri and my mother, deceased,
Ethel Cagle was born in Thebes, Ill. If you have ever been this way, you
will understand how hard it is to get any information. I am searching
for info on her parents, Pleas (Pleas is in my mind a question, but that
is what everyone ever called him) and Martha Rena Cagle, born Mosher.
They eloped and came to Caruthersville, Mo from Omaha, Nebraska in 1908.
Her father was William Mosher, all other info is unknown. Martha Rena
was born in 1889, The courthouses have not been much help due to the
lack of info. Any hints as to where to go next?
Sincerely with many thanks
Freddie L. Bertholomey

Freddie,
Thank you for the nice compliment. Also I know
how easy it is to get discouraged.
When you get frustrated though, you have to step
back and take a deep breath. Genealogy is not an
easy subject due to it's nature. Your dealing with
old records, or the lack of them. Your success is
due in part, to how you approach your researdh.
Properly done, a family tree is started with yourself.
Then if you are married, she or he is included also.
Of course the children of a marriage come next.
Then parents from both sides of a family, are next
in line. You start with what you know, and once you
get to a certain generation, your research becomes
more dificult.
For my part, I have always compared it to being like
a good detective. You look at every lead you have,
and follow it until you reach a dead end.
The person you are looking for was named, Pleasant Cagle. Freddie,
although I am interested
in Cagle research, I don't have complete details on
all, Cagles. What I do have in some cases, are bits
and pieces of information. However, in most cases
this is enough to give someone a good lead.
You also have to understand that sometimes I am
correct, other times not.
Having eloped and moved to Caruthersville, Mo; in
1908 they could be in the 1910 census, for Pemiscot County. This is
where you would first find
them in a census. Also if they are not in this counties census, they
should be in one some place.
There are a few cases where families are missed in
a census, but this is rare.
The data I have says the Courthouse in Pemiscot
County, burned on 12-02-1882.
This would explain the lack of some of their records.
However, the census was run by the Federal Government, not by State &
County.
Your branch of Cagle's, appear to have settled for a
time in Williamson Co; IL.
The name Pleasent Cagle, appears in a index of
names I have for that county, in 1870.
These list only names, no relationship, and no ages.
Here are all the names who appear with him.
Cagle, Charles (could be his father)
Cagle, Eddie
Cagle, James
Cagle, Martha
Cagle, Mary
Cagle, Maude
Cagle, Nancy
Cagle, Pleasent
Cagle, Timothy
Keep in mind also Freddie, that the name Pleasent,
is a very unusual name.
