Gold mining in Moore county is being
carried on with considerable success. The
old and well known Cagle mine, which has
been leased by that family for years has
been sold to I. C. Overton, of New York.
The vein proper it is understood, he proposes
to put in the hands of a strong company,
while what is known as Red Hills he
will work, and is now putting up his machinery
for this purpose.

On Friday evening, Oct. 17th, Henry Cagle, an aged and
good citizen of Haywood, in attempting to walk a foot log
across Jonathan's creek, fell off and was drowned.

$50 Reward. We learn that George Cagle was murdered on the 28th ult.,
by D. A. Criscoe. The killing took place near Big Lick, Stanly county.
Said Criscoe is about five feet, nine iuches high, light complexion,
and blue eyes. The above reward is offered for the apprehension of the murderer.

Union Court. Last week we gave an accountof the trial, in Union county
Superior Court, of Daniel Criscoe for killing George Cagle, in Stanly county,
but did not state the verdict of the Jury.
After the Democrat went to press on Friday, we learned that the Jury rendered
a verdict of not guilty. The case is simply this Criscoe killed Cagle for unlawful
intimacy with his (Criscoe's) wife. The man ought to have been tried a year ago and
set free.
