Earl,
I will disagree for the sake of argument, primarily because I have followed
the views of John G. Cagle for all these years and don't see a reason to
change just yet. Perhaps you have something that I am not aware of.
It had been the opinion of most that Jacob Cagle who moved to Hall Co., GA
was the son of John Dutchman? I personally don't have any proof one way or
the other. Also, I believe I have read that the John Cagle in the Orange
Co. Tax records was the son of David, also in Orange records and that they
show in those records as such?. If not the son of John Dutchman, who is the
Jacob Cagle in Hall Co., GA?
David

Hello List Members,
Thomas M. Cagle, wrote me and sent me data
on his family.
Thomas, thanks for sending me your family history. You have done a nice
job researching
your family line. One of the biggest disapointments in genealogy is the
lack of early records. Also some were destroyed by natural disaster, or
lost in other ways.
Thomas M.Cagle's, ancestor was Jacob Cagle.
As those of us who have done research know,
he was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. One of the the important
papers left behind was
his pension application from Warren Co; Tn.
The main data it gives is his place of birth, and
date of birth, April 1755, near the head waters
of deep river in North Carolina.
Orange Co; NC; would appear to be his place
of birth. Also for the record I believe that his
father was John "Dutchman" Cagle. Anyone who disagrees with me is
welcome to do so.
However, we will make our comments to the list, so all can read.
I base this in part from a listing for John Cagle,
on a tax list of Orange Co; NC; for 1755.
This is more importantly noted from John Cagle's will from Moore Co; NC
in 1799.
In this will he lists a Jacob Cagle, as one of his
sons. It is also important to note that he was not
listed as a minor son. Jacob Cagle, was given a sum of twenty shillings.
As has been custom a man takes care of his wife, and minor children
first in a will.
This may not always be the case, but for the most part it is.
He lists his minor sons as John & William. He
goes on to show his other children :
Susanna Cagle
Dorety Cagle (Dorthy?)
Margaret Cagle
Elizabeth Gilmore (Married name ?)
George Cagle
Mary Melton (Married name?)
Henry Cagle
My notes in parenthesis, make me assume that these were his Cagle
daughters, who had married.
It is also believed by many that John "Dutchman" Cagle, was married
twice. I also
believe this to be the case.
His first wife is thought to have been Johanetta
Hart, and was the mother of Jacob.
His second wife is thought to have been,
Catharina Seitz.
The first federal census lists Jacob Cagle, as
I show below:
1790 census North Carolina
Moore County Fayette District
1st # free white males 16 year upwards and head of families
2nd # free white males under 16 years
3rd # free white females and head of families

Cagle, John, 2,2,3,0,0 ( I also include John Cagle's listing which is
out of order)

Please note the difference in how Jacob Cagle,
is bracketed. In 1800 it goes along with his date
of birth 1755.
In the next 1810 census bracket it shows him to
have been born 1785 - 1794.
Either this isn't the same Jacob Cagle, or they
have him and wife in the wrong brackets.
If anyone feels that Jacob Cagle, is placed with
the wrong father, please reply to the list.
It is my belief that John "Dutchman" Cagle, and
Leonard Cagle b. abt, 1730, were brothers.
As most of you on the list know Leonard Cagle,
was my direct ancestor.
Regards,
Earl
