I have decided to write, a series of self help
articles. This one is about the Social Security
Death Index.
Most of you on the Cagle list, are aware of the
many resources online.
This series of articles will be for those who are
not aware of them. At least this is my intention,
and I hope to do a good job.
Those who would like to help write articles also,
please do. All I ask is that it should be written in
a way to help others.
I would like to keep this somewhat organized.
Census Records - 1790 - 1920
Birth & Death Records
Marriage Records
Land Records
Court Records
These are just a few of the many records that
concern genealogy.
You may make your articles as short or as long
as you like.
Social Security Death Index
Franklin D. Roosevelt, signed the social security act into law on
8-14-1935.
The purpose to genealogists is to gain data on
ones ancestors.
Rootsweb, in my opinion has the best SSDI
online. It is of course free for anyone online to
use. Also it is simple to use and can be searched by surname, first &
last name, and also social security number.
You can search by surname only, but be aware
you will get many names.
The rarity of the surname will determine how many results you get. Even
a surname as rare
as Cagle, will return many results.
Jjust imagine how many with the name of Smith or Brown.
Once you find the person your looking for, you
will have a date of birth, date of death, last place of residence etc.
These in turn will give you clues to learn more
about this person, and their family.
