Dear List,
Lee, You found John killed in a boiler explosion while surfing the net?
Ahhhhh! I want to surf where you surfed!!!!!
I believe my Charles and John are the same as David's Charles and John. As
far as I know, David and Nancy's information about the family is correct. The
boys ran away and were never heard from again.... in Tennessee. My story
picks up with two boys who ran away from Tennessee and became Steamboat
Pilots on the Mississippi River. That's where their info stops and mine picks
up.
I wrote a nice long letter to the list about my grandfather's story. I don't
see it in the recent message list. Did the list recieve the stories? There
was alot of info there.
There was speculation, you say, that the boys were both killed in the civil
war. I guess the family was ready to bury them and call them dead. John did
not live to see the civil war. Both boys thought they were fugitives and were
afraid to go back to Tennessee. Even my grandfather was afraid to be found.
He had my sister and I promise to keep quiet. He passed away in March and I
am not quiet anymore. My sister remembers the story he told us differently
than I. She remembers that John ran away and was caught, and ran away a
second time, and that both boys ran away separately. All I remember him
saying was that Charles ran away, and the two boys riverboated together. He
did not know if John had run away. So there are two different memories, but
at least we both remember John.
Charles Cagle was born in Warren, Co. TN on July 12, 1830.
He does not connect to the Warren County Cagles. David said the family
made a trip around 1830 and that Elizabeth may have stayed behind with her
husband's cousins in Warren Co.
Charles Cagle was spotted in Lawrence County Ark in 1852
according to TX pension application affiant.
Charles Cagle was married April 14, 1858 in Shreveport, Caddo Parrish, LA
to Virginia Victoria Ellette (this is a name correction)
b. in Goochland Co. Virginia on June 19, 1870.
Charles Cagle is in the 1860 census with wife Virginia,
in Hunt Co., TX just south of Ladonia(Fannin Co); as a "Gambler".
Note: Virginia must have been 7 mos. pregnant with her first child when
the census was taken in Oct.
Charles Cagle joined the Confederate Army on Sept. 10, 1861
at Camp Barton in Dallas, TX.
Charles Cagle recieved an honorable discharge on Jan. 16, 1862
(unknown physical disability) at Camp Mulberry. Ark.
Charles Cagle had a son born in Dallas on July 26, 1877.
This would be my gr grandfather, Charles Ellette Cagle.
Charles Cagle applied for Confederate Pension on 6-26-1899 at Dallas, TX.
He states that he resided in Dallas since winter of 1861.
Charles Cagle died on 4-16-1908 in Dallas.
Recorded City of Dallas Vital Statistics.
He was 78 years old.
Charles Ellette's birth certificate says he was the 7th child born of this
woman. My grandfather wrote down the following information about the
children. This info may have come from census records, but more likely came
from Bible pages, which I will have in my hands very soon.
Charles and Virginia's Children:

Charles Ellette Cagle, b. 7-26-1877
d. 6-4-1948 (81 yrs old)
buried in Galveston, TX
James Harry Cagle, b. 7-22-1881
d. ?
Lived in Rowlett, TX with family.
You see, there is one missing.
Also, I do not have contact with Harry's decendants, yet. My grandfather knew
his father, Charles Ellette and his Uncle Harry. He said they looked like
twins. These were the only two he knew. I have photo of Chas & wife Virginia.
There is another George W. Cagle at the cem in another block. I went to get
the dates from the stone, but I couldn't find any live people to help me and
I couldn't find it. It's a big cemetery. Will try again.
Again, did you get my story about the explosion? I have not given this info
to anyone except David. Did not want to upset anyone. There is only one John
Cagle who ran away from TN to be incinerated on a steamboat, don't you think?
Let's hope so. There is little doubt that we are talking about the same John
and Charles.
More later,
You's Cousin in Texas
