Jay:
I tend to agree with regard to the 1900 Census of Whitley Co., KY and
1900 Cumberland Co., TN.
These most certainly are different men. Do you know when & where Henry P
was buried.

Henry P Cagle
In 1989 the Cagle Newsletter had a very nice article about Henry
Pickney Cagle and his wife Susanna E. Cagle. It traces his history
back
to the Revolutionary War Soldier Jacob Cagle and beyond. As this is
my
assumed line of Cagle decent, this article was a welcome find.
However
there is something that does not fit with this Henry P Cagle being
in
the Jacob Cagle line as developed in the article.
First, the 1900 census of Cumberland County Tennessee has Henry P.
Cagle
age 63; (birth month and year is missing), born in TN, and both
parents
born in TN. His occupation in the article is given as physician but
the
source of this information was only family oral history. The 1900
census
has him listed as a clergyman. At he Archives of the State of
Tennessee,
I request a search to see if there may have been a licensed
physician by
this name, but none was found. Also of importance is that the date
of
the enumeration is listed as June 7, 1900.
Second, the 1900 census of Whitley Co in Kentucky we find Hanre
Kagle
living with his daughter, Laura, son in law, James Fox, and grand
son,
Joe. This Henry Cagle is listed as being age 72, born in Nov. of
1827
in TN and his parents were both born in NC. His daughter Laura was
listed as being born in IL with both of her parents being born in
TN.
The date of the enumeration is listed as June 9th of 1900. .
I had initially thought that these two men may have been one in the
same
and that he was counted twice while visiting his daughter in
Kentucky.
However as the dates of the two enumerations are shown to have been
recorded only a day and one-half apart, I doubt that in 1900 it
would
have been feasible to have made such a trip in such a short time.
Also,
I have a copy of the permission slip when Lauras father gave
permission
for his underage daughter to marry. . It is signed H.P. Cagle. On
24
Aug 1865 a man listed as H.P. Cagle married Catherine Warner in
Johnson
Co. IL. Catherine who was born in Tennessee was his 4th wife. The
1880
Census of Alexander Co, IL (next to Johnson Co. IL) list Henry P age
53
and Catherine 37 with their youngest child listed as Laura M age 2.
This
would match the age for the 16-year Laura who married my
great-grandfather James Fox in Whitley County on 9 Sep 1894 and it
would
also match the location of her birth. Family history tells us that
Lauras middle name was Magnolia, which would also match the Laura
M. as
listed in the 1880 census. In addition, my grandfathers youngest
sister, Mae, is still living and she said her mother Laura spoke of
her
siblings Will, Charles, and Ellen as well as half-brothers Jimmy and
Johnny. These names match well with the census of 1870 and 1880 in
which the H.P. Cagle family is listed.
As I noted above the 1989 article lists the Cumberland Co Henry
Cagle as
a physician while the 1900 census lists him as a clergyman. To add
to
the confusion, the 1870 census of Scott Co in Missouri (across the
Mississippi from Johnson Co IL) has a Henry P. Cagle as a Physician.
I
contend that this is the same Henry as in the 1880 census in IL as
the
name of the wife in both cases is Catherine, and the names and ages
of
the children match perfectly with the 1880 IL census. Moreover,
family
oral history notes that the Henry who was in Whitley County KY in
1900
was highly regarded as a root doctor or herbalist, but certainly not
a
physician. I can see how genealogical researchers may have confused
these two men. But, for all of the reasoning listed above, I
conclude
that the Henry P. Cagle in the 1900 census of Cumberland County TN
and
the Henry of Whitley County KY are different men.
Also I contend that the Whitley County KY Henry is the H.P. Cagle
who
was the husband of Catherine Warner and the son of Henry Cagle and
the
grandson of Revolutionary War Solider Jacob Cagle. Jacob and his
wife
Celia were both born in NC and later moved to Warren Co TN where
H.P.
Cagle was born. This matches also matches the 1900 census record of
the
Whitley Co KY Henry relative to the place of his birth and that of
his
of his parents. The fact that the Laura listed in the 1900 census of
Whitley County KY is noted as being born in IL and that her parents
were
born in TN only adds to my conclusion.
As H.P.Cagle's father Henry died prior to the very important 1850
census
I have not been able to develop a DAR proof of the connection of
H.P. to
Henry or Henry to Jacob but a preponderance of the circumstantial
evidence leads me to believe this to be the case.
I would welcome comment on the above reasoning.
