Lee and list
Thanks a bunch for this info. I didn't have the part about James Henry,
naming a son John Cox Cagle. I'll have to follow up on this. Also I had very
little info on Nancy and John Summey's Family. I have been trying to track
down her line, but haven't had much time lately, and little luck when I did
try researching this family back up the line.
Maybe Nancy Jane Balmer or one of the other in depth Cagle sleuths will be
able to help us out on this now.
Thanks again,
Eddie

List,
In the "Cagle Land Grants of North Carolina, 1767-1918, Henderson County
(present Transylvania)
County, page 606, authored by John G. Cagle, Little Rock, AR, I find the
following notation with regard to Nancy Cagle, b. 23 Feb 1830, d. 21 Dec
1897, Marietta, Greenville Co., SC:
"Also, living nearby were some of Leonard and Mary's daughters: Louisa,
married to Ota L Floener; Ann, married to Caleb Orr; and Nancy, married
to John Summey. A Jno Summey served as one of Leonard Cagle's chain
carriers in one of his 1858 land entries (#680)."
Some time back we debated as to whether or not Nancy Cagle was married,
as some said,
to this John Summey as indicated above by John G. Cagle. At the same
time, others insisted
Nancy married John Jackson Cox (whom I tend to agree with) on the basis
of: The 1850 census of NC which lists Nancy Cagle as a daughter of
Leonard and Mary and that she was 18yrs of
age at this census. This would make her born late 1831 or early 1832.
Also, in 1871 in Greenville, SC, the probate court ordered Jacob W Cagle
and Nancy Cox (his sister) to appear and show cause why land belonging to
Leonard Cagle in SC could not be sold. Earlier court papers list Nancy
Cox and Jacob W Cagle in the settlement of the estate of Leonard Cagle of
NC.
Next is the obit for Nancy Cox.
The Enterprise and Mountaineer, Greenville S.C., Dec 25, 1897, Vol
LXXIII--no. 50, pg #4.
"On Tuesday, after a sickness of several weeks from pneumonia, Mrs Nancy
Cox died at the home near Marietta. The deceased was the wife of the
late, John (Jackson) Cox and a sister of Col Jacob W Cagle of this city.
She was sixty eight years old and leaves six children. J. W. Cox of this
place was a son. Mrs Cox was a faithful member of the Marietta Baptist
Church and a loving mother. A kind and thoughtful neighbor and a
consistent Christian. The funeral took place on Thursday at the Marietta
Baptist Church and the remains were interred in the Cox family burying
ground."
Next, is the naming of her children (1) is named for Nancy's father
Leonard. She named her son Leonard Cagle Cox. She also, named (2)
another of her son's for her brother, Col Jacob W Cagle. This one she
named Jacob. Additionally, James Henry another of her brothers named (3)
one of his son's John Cox Cagle.
There has been considerable conflict as to who Nancy's husband was, in my
opinion, this pretty much settles the issue.
As for Nancy who married John Summey, this is the information I have and
I would like those of
you with large indexes or census information to try to determine who this
Nancy Cagle is the
daughter of, for she most certainly is not the daughter of Leonard.
