Descendants of David Crockett Cagle
Generation No. 1
1. David Crockett2 Cagle (William C1) was born 11 May 1835 in Gainesville, Hall County,
Georgia, and died 06 May 1923 in Fanshawe, LeFlore County, Oklahoma. He married Mary A
Herndon 21 August 1861 in Larissa, Winston Co., Alabama. She was born 15 March 1839 in
Gainesville, Hall County, Georgia, and died 26 February 1926 in Fanshawe, LeFlore County,
Oklahoma.
Notes for David Crockett Cagle:
David grew to adulthood in Hall Co., GA, and appeared in the household of William and Mary
Cagle in the Fed Census of 1850 in Hall Co., at the age of 14. David has not been located
for the Fed Census of 1860,
but it is known that he had migrated to Winston County, AL by the early 1860s for on Aug
21, 1861, he was married to Mary A Herndon at Larissa, Winston Co., AL. The names, DOB,
place of birth, dates of
marriage and death were taken from the family bible of David and Mary and provided by
Helen O'Dell
who is the daughter of John McKinley Cagle, 1898-1956. Three Cagle cousins, from the
states of Georgia, Arkansas and Tennessee, but whose ancestors were among the Cagle
pioneers of old cumberland Co., NC, served as soldiers in the Civil War as young men, and
then, in later years, all made their way, by separate routes, to the old Choctaw Nation,
and settled permanently in what eventually became LeFlore Co., OK with the coming of
Oklahoma Statehood in 1907. These were David, Charles T Cagle 1839-1887, a native of
Jackson Co., AR, is buried in the Hall Cemetery in Rural LeFlore County;
Enoch Cagle, 1847-1934, a native of East Tennessee, is buried in the City Cemetery in
Howe, OK. In the July 1862 term of the Inferior Court in Hall Co., GA, David was summoned
as a prospective juror, but did not appear incourt, having already left some time
previously. While a resident of Winston Co., AL, David served as a soldier in the Civil
War, and was one of several Cagles across the South who served in both the Confederate and
Union armies. He enlisted first in the CSA on Sep 6, 1862, at Jasper, Walker Co., AL, in
Company A, 13th Battalion, Alabama Partisan Rangers, but his service lasted less than a
month, and by the end of September he was noted as being absent without leave. The reason
for David's change of heart during the course of the War is not known, but it might be
noted that Winston County was a Union stronghold during the Civil War and attracted many
volunteers to the Union Army, most of whom enlisted in the 1st Alabama Cavalry (USA).
David enlisted in Company L, 1st Alabama Cavalry on Sep 25, 1863, for a one-year period,
and re-enlisted on Dec 21, 1864, and served until his discharge after the close of the
War. After the Civil War, David remained in Winston Co., AL for a few years, but by 1872
had moved to Howell Co., Missouri and by 1880 to Independence Co., Arkansas. During the
1880s, he migrated to the Choctaw Nation, and , after living for a period of time in St
Clair Co., Missouri near the time of the 1900 Federal Census, returned permanently to the
Choctaw Nation in the early 1900s, where he eventually established his home near Fanshawe,
in what would soon become LeFlore Co., Oklahoma.

Thanks, Lee. I'm knew at this geneology business so I don't exacly know how
to get information. My Cagle line goes through Oklahoma, too, but I know
there are lots of Cagles in that area. My Cagle lineage, beginning with my
father and going back is: Louis C. Cagle ( living in Tyler, TX), Charlie W.
Cagle (deceased - Pine Bluff, Ark. born in LeFlore, Co. OK), James William
Cagle (OK), David Crockett Cagle (born 5/11/1835 in Hall Co., GA -- died
1923 in OK, Le Flore, Co.), William C. Cagle, Jacob Cagle, John Dutchman (or
Johan Theobold) Cagle, and Leonhart Kegel (born in Germany).
I am interested in learning more about David Crockett Cagle and back. I know
that David Crockett Cagle fought for the North in the only Yankee company
out of Alabama. After the war he took his family from Alabama, (wonder why?
ha!) through Missouri and then settled in Le Flore Co. of Indian Territory.
Are you from anywhere in this line or a totally different one? I always
thought Cagle was a relatively unusual name, but I'm discovering they're
everywhere!
Elaine

Howdy Elaine,
Not at all. Seems the TN Cagles are more active right now. If you have a
question, just submit
it to the List and I am sure someone can help you. Or, you might
post
your own ancestors and
be surprised to learn you have cousins who belong to the list.

Is this Cagle website concerned with Tennessee Cagles only? Just
wondering.
Thanks,
