One of the Cagle Newsletters Cagle Census Records of the South 1860-1910, North Carolina:
Jackson County pg. 104 states:
At the August 6, 1939 Cagle Reunion: He (being C.C. Cagle of Sylva, NC) related that his
great grandfather, Capt. John Cagle, was in the Revolutionary Battle of Guilford Court
House. Of Capt. John Cagle's children, he located four sons:
#1 His grandfather came to Western, NC (This would be Jonathan Cagle who married Rachel
Fox). His father, one of the pioneers of Jackson County, NC married _____________ Fox.
He was a teacher. C. C. Cagle was born there on 04 July 1875 and served in the Spanish
American War. His mother was sister of John Fox, author of the Trail of the Lonesome
Pine. The wording of this paragraph is off. His father, one of the pioneers of Jackson
County, NC married _______ Fox should be grandfather or if he is meaning Jonathan's
father, John, who it is assumed married Lucy Payne born 1770? Or could it be Lucy Fox?
#2 One son settled in Henderson County, NC.
#3 One son settled in or near Greenville, S.C.
#4 One settled in Georgia.
C. C. Cagle is Chandler Collins Cagle, son of Evan Harvey Cagle, son of John Cagle and
Rachel Fox.
His mother must be talking about mother of Evan Harvey Cagle which is Rachel Fox.
Now my question is how is this possible.
Rachel Fox was born in 1804.
John Fox, Jr. who wrote the Trail of the Lonesome Pine was born in 1862 in Bourbon County,
KY, son of John William Fox and Minerva Worth Carr. (That is all the family history I
could find on him).
As I read the Cagle newsletter many years ago I did not pay close attention to detail as I
am today. Either the author misspoke of the details or C.C. Cagle had something wrong.
Does anyone else see something wrong in this statement?
Well off to find Cagle war records on Fold3.
