Earl,
Sarah Cagle is my great-great-grandmother. She and her husband John are
both
buried in Warren County, Tennessee, but I have found no cemetery record
for John. Shiloh Cemetery is near the Shiloh Methodist Church in
McMinnville, Warren County, Tennessee.
WARREN COUNTY, TENNESSEE WILL BOOKS 1-3, abstracted and compiled by
Betty Moore Majors, 1992, page 138, quotes Warren County will records
for John Cagle as follows:
"pg 172. 27 Jan. 1854. Will of John Cagle. I, John Cagle, do make and
publish this my last will and testament. First, I direct that my funeral
expenses and debts be paid. Secondly, I give to my beloved wife Sarah
Cagle all my land, to wit: 115 acres whereon I now live and 90 acres on
the Cumberland Mountain. She is also to receive all my personal property
for her use and for her to raise all my children. After her death (or
widowhood) all is to be equally divided amongst all my children.
Executors, my two oldest sons James and Leonard Cagle. Witnessed Thomas
Brown, Esq., Thomas King, Jesse Mooneyham. Proven in open court 6 Mar
1854."
According to my records, Sarah Cagle was Sarah "Sallie" Brown, b. 1811
in Tennessee to Tommie Brown and Celia Green (I don't know if these are
correct names for her parents). Her tombstone apparently indicates she
was born 28 Jan 1813 and died 16 Aug 1869; however, according to the
1850 Warren County, TN census, Sarah was 39 years old, which would put
her birth year 1811. The 1860 census Warren County, TN census showed her
as being 40 years of age (gaining only one year of age in ten years).
Notice also that her tombstone indicates her death occurred in 1869 and
apparently her property was dispersed in 1867, according to the Warren
County Will Book 4, as follows:
WARREN COUNTY, TN WILL BOOK 4, page 28, says: "pg 406-407. 1 Nov.
1867. "Perfect" list of the personal property of the estate of Sarah
Cagle, dec'd, by James Cagle, administrator. Purchases by Sarah Cagle,
Thomas Cagle, Leonard Cagle, W. E. Cagle, John Cagle, A. B. Cagle, and
others."

Clifford & List,
Thanks for giving us this family history, on Sarah. As you and many of
us know census records can't be trusted. I like to think that when you
see dates on a tombstone, they have to be correct. However, you have to
wonder even on these at times. Thanks for telling us the location of
the cemetery also.
I just can't imagine that much difference on her date of death.
Do you have any idea as to how many unmarked graves are at this
cemetery? I have to wonder if John Cagle, is buried there also.
How far back in time did the church keep burial records?
Nice job on your family Clifford, and keep us all updated.
Earl
