Earl,
I never wrote the source of this information down but, I believe it was
contained in one of
John G Cagle's writings and most likely his book on North Carolina land
grants.
On Feb 25, 1756, Christopher Yow and wife Christina sold a tract of 200A
in Cumberland County to John Underwood, as recorded on pages 166-68 of
Cumberland County Deed Book 1; a summary of that deed
follows:
"Christopher Yow and his wife Christina, to John Underwood, a tract of
200A on the SW side of the NW Brancy of Cape Fear River, above Little
River, adjoining John Davis and Hugh & David Smith. /s/ Christopher (X)
Yow, Christina (X) Yow. Witnesses: Joseph Rainbolt, Wm Herring.
In this deed, Christopher Yow is mentioned as a Ropemaker, which
evidently was his occupation, in addition to his farming activities. The
purchase price for the tract of land was 55 pounds, 6 shillings.
It is unclear when Christopher Yow acquired this property, but probably
was prior to 1754, when this region was still part of old Bladen,
Cumberland, Moore and Lee, as the latter three were formed in the years
1754, 1784 and 1907. The reference to the "NW Branch of Cape Fear River"
is to the Deep River, which formerly bore that name, and which now forms
the northern boundary of Lee County. The reference to the "Little River:
is to the Upper Little River in present Lee County on which the
Christopher Yow homestead was located.
The deed from Christopher Yow to John Underwood was proved in open court
in the April 1757 Term of Cumberland County Court of Pleas and Quarter
Sessions, and is recorded in Cumberland Co, Minute Book A, 1755-1759.
Also in the year 1757, Christopher received a land grant from the Colony
of North Carolina.
"May 23, 1757. Granted to Christopher Yow of Cumberland County, a tract
of 400 acres patented Jan 8, 1760." It is known Christopher and wife
Christina owned this tract for at least 10 years after the date of
patent, for on Oct 15, 1770, they gave 100A of this tract to their
daughter Sarah. This deed appears in Cumberland County Deed Book 4, page
84.
Moved from Montgomery Co., NC in 1817 and settled in Henry County, GA in
1825.

A lady wrote asking about the ancestery of Charles Cagle and Sarah
Yow,
of Stanly Co.
Lee Cagle, had made a previous post on them. So may be you can help
her
with this family.
I do know that a Christopher Yow, was enumerated in the Fayette
Dist. in
the 1790 Moore Co; NC; census. He lived in the same area as many of
our
families.
There is a very good chance that Sarah Yow, is a decendant of this
line.
There also was an early arrival of a Hans Yow, as listed below. This
is
a very uncommon surname. More than likley Christopher Yow, is a
decendant of Hans Yow.
