I know of no proof for this except that it was concluded some 5 - 6 yrs ago, that this was the case since Jacob Cagle, b. Apr 1755 was supposedly the first CAGLE born in new land of North Carolina. Is this not true? In fact, I believe it was John G who made this statement based on Jacob's own admission in his application for an Army Pension.

There is no proof one way or the other as to a middle name, though it is true he was a stave maker which are used in the production of kegs and barrels. Because of the popularity of the name William, he was probably called William the Cooper until it stuck and became William C Cagle or William Cooper Cagle.
It is also, true that Isom Andrew, grandson of William C named a son Columbus as did, at least one other of William's grandsons of which there are many.
It is also, possible William Sr's middle name was something entirely different, and Cooper just stuck because of his occupation.
As for me, I prefer just William Columbus Sr, until it is proven otherwise. However, we must remember Ashley has his DAR approved, so it is apparently proven if not by Ashley, then by someone else's proven DAR, thus for me I will accept the name "Columbus" as the middle name for William C Cagle, Sr b. 1754, Oley Twp, Berks Co., PA; d. aft 1852 in Sevier Co., TN based on Ashley's proven DAR.

My connection to you is through Celia Louisa CAGLE, b. 6 Nov 1855, Moore Co., NC who married William H DUPREE, b. 12 Jun 1858, Carthage Dist, Moore County., NC. William H DUPREE is the son of James H DUPREE and Elizabeth Baldwin. Celia Louisa Cagle is the daughter of Elisha Cagle, b. 27 Nov 1816, Moore Co., NC and Elizabeth Ann Stutts, b. 29 Nov 1816, moore Co., NC.
I was a little foggy headed the morning you called. Hope this helps in your research of the two families. If I can be of assistance do not hesitate to call again, later in the day would be preferable.

Thanks for you time this morning... James Dupree - Birth around 1834, father=John, parents in Carthage, Moore County NC married Elizabeth Baldwin 1850s. Elizabeth Father Ausborn and wife were in Randolph County NC. James had sister Martha Ann Dupree, my great great grandmother who married my great great grandfather David Washington Baldwin. Martha Ann was sister to James Dupree and Elizabeth Baldwin was sister to David Washington Baldwin. Ausborn Baldwin, father of Elizabeth and David, purchased the land that I have today in 1849 for Elizabeth and David in Randolph County. Elizabeth and John Dupree settled and farmed 1/2 and Martha Ann and David Baldwin settled and farmed the other 1/2. Elizabeth and James Dupree moved back to Carthage, Moore County in the 1870s-1880s from what I can tell. Anyway, interesting note, from all I've seen in geneolgy search Ausborn Baldwin's name is spelled Osborn or Osborne, but it's really Ausborn. We have the original letter that he wrote to David in 1849 telling David about buying he and Elizabeth the land with his correct name spelling in signature and on address. Edith this is LaMona many years back someone started the name for William Cooper Cagle which has never been proved. I think where it came from William C. Cagle was a Coper keg maker by trade so, extra digit was added to be Cooper So, I don't think the Cooper is part of his name If anything It would be William Crawford Cagle for this is my great grandfathers I don't even have a middle name for William C. Cagle my ggg grandfather So I'm not asking you to take it away just my thoughts. Thank you for your file. LaMona
