Board Members,
I have really enjoyed working with you the past few weeks.
Before I just read posts and worked on my projects. I must
say how much nicer it has been with everyones comments.
I have just finished my Knoxville canvass and talked to about 39
different families. It was fun in that a few really knew who I was.
Some of them were in my Henry line. One from
Alabama. Two from Cocke County which is my weakest research.
I consider myself a specialist on Eastern Tennessee. I would solicite
anyone's help on Cocke County. Like
who is Otties grand father??? Anyone can email me direct to ashleycagle1908(a)sbcglobal.net
Ashley
I will add my two cents to yours My Mother was named Lydia Mae and they
called her Biddy on Census. I think like you it is a nickname and she was youngest
and probably southern for Little Biddy. Little Bit.

I agree that she is most likely the Biddy Cagle who died in 1908 in
Knoxville and have entered her the same in my program!

This story has nothing to do with Cagles, but brought back a memory for me
that I want to share.....
My Mother had only brothers.....one day when she was in the 4th grade, there
was a knock on the classroom door. The teacher answered.....there stood my
Mother's little brother, Roy. Roy asked to speak to "Sister", the teacher
asked him what her name was & he answered, "Sister". The teacher couldn't
get him to say any other name so she said he should come in & go find his
sister....my Mother had already slid down in her desk chair in embarrassment
when he walked over to her. (Her statement)- "I could've killed
him"......on the way home that afternoon, she said she boxed his ears so
he'd never embarrass her again & taught him a lesson, as well as her name,
Catherine.
BTW, the guys are correct about the "Biddie" name, that's what they were
when I grew up.....we used to get a colored one for Easter each year.

My email address is edwinmerryman(a)hotmail.com<mailto:edwinmerryman@hotmail.com>. I seldom use Johnaud1649 . I check for some stray email, perhaps, but seldom find any. I found the one about biddy was on this one too so answered from it.

I want to add my two cents here...I have several Beadie Ann's in my
family...born around 1835-1850. On some census it is spelled 'Bidy" and
"Biddy" for my grgrandmother, Beadie Ann Martin.I think "Beadie" was a
popular name back then. I too...knew it to mean 'very small" . My
brother in law was caled "Bit" because the siblings called him "little
Bit " when he was a baby.Nothing to do with his name. So it is probably
any of this, but I feel the name "Biddy" was the name that was
popular...spelled however some peson spelled it. Stella
Thanks Ed.
I suppose everyone is not as old as we are or weren't raised on a farm. I
qualify for both. When I was young, in the spring, my parents would buy
about 200 mail-order chicks. They were "Biddies." We kept the hens and had
fried chicken, biscuits and gravy with the rest. Colonel Sanders didn't
have anything on my mama. Nothing much better.

Ashley, Don't assume to much in names. My former wife was named Biddie and that his her birth certificate name. She was named for her grand mother whose name was spelled the same way. I feel like it was probably a name spelled either way that has lost favor with those that impose whatever we come to be called, like me just another four letter word. Best wishes, Earl Cagle
