Hello Annie,
I am interested in sharing information about the Wallace and Cagle family of Catahoula Parish, La.
This is part of my Cagle line from Mississippi as well.
I did find a marriage for Keziah Craig to Thomas Hardy in 1888.
I am also interested in the grave stone you mention.
Please contact me.

I would appreciate a Cagle Journal look-up from someone who has back issues. On p. 204 of Jimmie B. Cagle's book, he notes that Paul Cagle (Leonard, Leonhart) served in the War of 1812. His source of information on Paul is the Cagle Journal for July 1994, and the October, November, and December 1997 issues. I have tried to get those particular issues from John G. Cagle with no luck. Is there anyone who can tell me what John G. Cagle's primary source was relating to Paul Cagle's war service? I've tried the National Archives and the Tennessee State Archives with no success.
Thanks.

Hello cousins and/or Cagle researchers, I looked briefly, could not find
this, in the archives..before I wrote to ask you.
Did anyone answer...as to who the Johann Conrad Kagel is that shows
on Captain's list and the signing of Oath of Allegiance to England, on
the ship PEGGY, list 204B foreigners imported from Rotterdam? Capt. was
James Abercrombie.25th Sept 1753. If this was known by someone...as
to who this is...please post again. Thanks very much...Stella

Hello JoAnn,
As I read your post, I see where we cross many lines in this area of Mississippi.
First of all there are many Everett Smith's. And the father of the Preston Smith you mention was an Everett Smith b. 1823 d. 1853, who married Mary Jane Dunn.
CENSUS: 1850 U.S. Federal Census, Lawrence Co., MS. p. 431; family #479. Everett Smith age 27 b. Ms.m wife M. J. age 23 b. Ms. children: F. E. female age 3 and S. P. male age 1. Image 71 of 89. His name was Samuel Preston Smith b. 18 Sep 1849 and died 26 Jan 1886.
Mary Jane Smith remarried and appears on the next census like this:
CENSUS: 1860 United States Federal Census Record
Name: Samuel Smith
Age in 1860: 11
Birth Year: abt 1849
Birthplace: Mississippi
Home in 1860: Not Stated, Lawrence, Mississippi
Race: White
Gender: Male
Post Office: Monticello
Value of real estate:
Household Members: Name Age
James Hudnal 30
Mary Smith 33
Frances Smith 12
Samuel Smith 11
Lenora Smith 8
Randolph Hudnal 2
Hudnall dies in 1862 in the Civil War. I didn't find her yet in the 1870 census, but the children looked like this:
CENSUS: For 1870 Lincoln Co., MS. has the children. S.P. Smith (which is Samuel Pearson) and his sister L. Smith (Lenora) and two half brothers, E. Hudnall age 11 and J. Hudnall age 9; living in the home of J. E. Harper age 55 and his wife A. Harper age 45. Census taken 8 Aug 1870.
Then Mary Jane Smith Hudnall evidently remarries a Carroll Bardwell and the next census we find her:
CENSUS: 1880 Lincoln Co., MS. - Ellison Hudnall age 21 now back living with his mother Mary Bardwell age 53 and her husband Carroll Bardwell age 35. All born in Ms. Census take 5 June 1880.
CENSUS: 1880 United States Federal Census Record
Name: Mary Bardwell
Age: 53
Estimated birth year: abt 1827
Birthplace: Mississippi
Occupation: Keeps House
Relationship to head-of-household: Wife
Home in 1880: Beat 1, Lincoln, Mississippi
Marital status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Female
Spouse's name: Carroll Bardwell
Father's birthplace: NC
Mother's birthplace: MS
The Mary Anna/Alma/Alina who is the Mary Ann Cagle that married another Everett Smith b. 1809 d. 1836 is my line. The reason I know for sure on her and this Everett, is he was murdered and she remarried in 1837 my 2nd g-grandfather, James Mitchell Pierce. She is the mother of my g-grandfather, William Randall Pierce (1844-1906). Her children with this Everett Smith are recorded in the PIERCE family bible that my cousin in Houston has. The children were: Lot, Sarah, Amanda, Elizabeth and Issac SMITH. I have seen the Bible, and I didn't find out who the SMITH children belonged to until 1996. When John Paul SMITH, a noted and reliable SMITH researcher of Brookhaven, Mississipi answered my inquiry.
You can contact me off these pages if you like and we can share more on what parts of the family you need.

Henry W Cagle, b. 1798 was married to Catherine C Holder, b. 1804, the former in Lancaster Co., SC and the latter in Burke Co., NC.
Eula B Cagle, b. 28 Nov 1900, Henderson Co., NC never married. She was the daughter of James Franklin, b. 1852, Henderson Co., NC and Mary Evangelina Hart also, born in Henderson Co., NC.
James Franklin Cagle, b. 1852 was the son of William Thomas Sr., b. 17 Apr 1806, Buncombe (later Henderson) Co., NC and Anthret Justice Thomas, b. 5 Jan 1810, also of Buncombe Co., NC. He was the son of John Francis and Jane Cagle, he was born 1782, Mecklenburg Co., NC. These are notes I have collected from various sources:
In addition to Valentine, this group included three young men, John Cagle, 1782-1854, Charles Cagle Jr., b. 1770, and Jacob Cagle, b. 1770s, who are probably nephews of Valentine, and sons of Charles Cagle, Sr., who died in 1801 in old Montgomery (present Stanly) Co., NC. At the time of the 1800 Census, these three men were enumerated in Buncombe County: Valentine (1211-1021), Charles (0001-3001) and Jacob (001-101). Valentine and Charles are erroneously listed in the 26-45 age bracket. Valentine; however, had a son and two daughters in the 16-26 age bracket, so must have been 40-45 years of age. Charles was somewhat younger, having only three daughters under 10 at home; was probably around 30 yrs of age. Jacob was younger still, enumerated in the 16-26 bracket. Valentine did have a son named John, 1798-1863; but, this John must be distinguished from John , 1782-1854, of the 1806 entry. Valentine's John later moved with him to Tennessee, and eventually settled in what is now Winston Co., AL in the1830s. John, 1782-1854, is a brother of Charles and Jacob Cagle. Compare with the Estate Settlement of Charles Cagle, Sr in Montgomery (Stanly) Co., in 1803, in which his sons are named as Charles, Jacob, John, Leonard, and George.
Among the early residents of Mecklenburg Co., NC were Conrad Hartwick and wife Susanna Cagle, daughter of Charles Cagle Sr; the Hartwicks began to appear in Mecklenburg Co census records in 1790 and by 1810 were joined by John Cagle, who is now known to have been Susanna's younger brother. Another daughter of Charles Cagle Sr was Catherine "Kitty" Cagle, who married Elias Horn, and appeared in the 1800 and 1810 census in nearby Montgomery Co., NC. At the time of the 1820 census, the Hartwicks, Horns and John Cagle were all absent from the census records, either having been missed by the Census taker, or having been residents of Montgomery Co., NC, for which the 1820 census has been destroyed. However, the death of Elias Horn, and his appearance in Probate Records in Mecklenburg Co in 1822 provides the clue for the identification of John Cagle. Elias Horn's will, found in Mecklenburg County Will Book D, p.81, which is summarized, clearly shows that he was the brother in law of John Cagle. "p81. Elias Horn. 11 Jan 1822, prb in Aug 1822 ct. Being in a very low state of health, I give $1 to each of my following children: Lanier, Mary, Michael, Sarah, Elizabeth, Agness, Caty,
Bidy, and Alexander Burton. I give the Caty Caigle, dau of my brother in law John Caigle the $500 owd to me by my brother Absolom, to the said John Caigle a mare with saddle and bridle as well as the $60 owed to me by my mother Sarah Horn. Sole exr: John Caigle. Wit: Jesse Brooks, John Wallace and Anthony Harkie.
In 1806, John Cagle entered the first of his NC land grants on Fetherston's Creek in Buncombe Co., now Henderson County, NC. This was not far from the Valentine and Charles Cagle entries of the 1798-1803 era. While Valentine and Charles eventually migrated to TN, John Cagle, 1782-1854, remained in Henderson County the rest of his life and left many descendants in the region.
John was a young man of about 24 years at the time of his entry of 1806, and this may have been his first land acquisition. His tract lay on the head branches of Fetherston and Millar Creeks, on the south side of the mountain between Clear Creek and Hooper's Creek, present Henderson County, NC of the present town of Hendersonville. The chain carriers for the survey were James Morgan and himself.
John's second land entry in what is now Henderson County came in late 1807, and was situated on the Middle Fork of Fetherston's Creek. This was in the same general area as his first entry in 1806. This consisted of 100 acres and adjoined his own property, and the land of James Morgan, who had been his chain carrier at his entry of 1806. By the time of the survey, on 19 Apr, 1808, John apparently was living on his entry of 1806, for the survey notes his new entry as "Beginning on Three Spanish Oaks and a Dogwood standing in a hollow and near the path that leads from sd. Cagle's house to his field on the mountain". The tract lay on the North and Middle Forks of Fetherston's Creek.
In the census of 1810, only John Cagle remains in Buncombe County of the Cagles who had lived in the Hooper Creek area. Jacob Cagle 1755-1845, another brother of Valentine, had moved from Moore to Buncombe County by 1810, but was located in what is now Transylvania County, many miles from John:
1810 Buncombe Co., NC: Cagle, John 2001-10__Unknown___
Cagle, Jacob 11101-01_Unknown__
At the time of the census of 1810, when John Cagle first appeared as a head of household, he was living on his place on Fetherston's Creek, which he had entered in 1806 and 1807. In 1811; however he sold 100 acres on Fetherston's Creek to Benjamin Lewis, recorded in Deed Book D, page 87, on 15 Nov 1811.
By 1820, John had been joined in the census records by a Leonard Cagle, 1798-1866, who himself would later appear in eight land entries in what are now Henderson and Transylvania County in 1828-1830 and 1857-1858:
1820 Buncombe Co., NC Cagle, John 11001-4101
Cagle, Leonard 0101-101
By the time of the 1820 Census, Leonard and Mary Osborne Cagle who had married in Jan 1819, were enumerated in Buncombe County "0101-101". The infant daughter in their home for the 1820 Census of Buncombe County was Anna Cagle who later married Caleb Orr, b. 1822. The young male in the 10-15 age bracket (1804-1810) is thought to be Leonard's younger brother, Henry Washington Cagle and who later bought a tract of land with Leonard on Mud Creek in 1833. Henry later had a land entry in Old Buncombe Co., in 1835.
The next land entry for John came on 6 Sep 1822, and was situated "on waters of Mud Creek & Hungary". This location, on Mud Creek and Hungary Creek, was near the present town of Hendersonville. This was surveyed in October of 1823, and granted 30 Nov 1824 consisting of 200 acres described as being on "Top of the Blue Ridge" and on the "East Side of the Ridge, Headwaters of Mud and Hungry Creeks". Adjoining landowners mentioned are Lyons' corner and Steel's path. The chain carriers were Jesse McMinn and John Lyons. Though this was John's last land grant, he bought and sold a number of other tracts of land in this region in the years following.
1830 Buncombe Co., NC Cagle, John 0001001-2220001
Cagle, William 10001-00001 Son of John
Cagle, Leonard 010001-310001
Cagle, Henry 00001-20001 Brother of Leonard
By 1830, they were joined in the census records by John's son, William Cagle, 1806-1885, who appears as a head of household for the first time. Leonard, 1798-1854, and Henry c.1803-Aft 1880, were nephews of John. Leonard eventually moved into what is now Transylvania (then part of old Buncombe), and Henry moved northward into that part of the county which remained as Buncombe, after the boundary changes. Henderson County was formed from Buncombe in 1838, and in the census of 1840, three Cagle household were listed:
1840 Henderson Co., NC Cagle, William 111001-21001
Cagle, Jacob 00001-10001
Cagle, Leonard 12101--11001
John seems to have been missed by the census taker in 1840, but later appeared in the 1850 census of Henderson. John's son William, 1806-1885, was joined as a head of household by his younger brother Jacob b. 1812. Leonard Cagle, 1798-1866, and wife, are here listed in the wrong age bracket by the census taker (listed in the 20-30 but, are actually in their forties). In 1850, John Cagle appears in his final census in Henderson County at the age of 68, with sons William and Jacob living nearby.
1850 Henderson NC:

Rachel 35 "
Emily S 12 "
Susan 10 "

*This listing was provided secondhand; if correct, it would seem that Jacob Cagle, b. 1812, was listed by a middle name in 1850. In 1860, he is again enumerated as Jacob. Leonard Cagle and family also, are enumerated in Henderson County in 1850.
Space does not permit an account of the many land transactions of John Cagle, 1782-1854, in the Henderson County area, most of which occurred after these three land entries of 1806, 1807, and 1822. However, an account of these has already been given in the chapter on Henderson County in the "Cagle Families in the South to 1850, Vol l, North Carolina by John G. Cagle. John Cagle, it is believed, died in 1854 in Henderson County.
Will dated 3 Jan. 1852 and probated June Session of 1854, Henderson Co. NC Book 1, Page 37:
"In the name of God amen. I, John Cagle of Henderson Co. NC being sick and not expecting to live much longer in the world but being perfectly sound in mind do make this my last will and testament.
First, I will and bequeath to my wife Jane (or Jinny) all the land where I now live consisting of one hundred and twenty five acres more or less to do as she thinks best with it to support her while she lives and at her death the said land to be equally divided among all our children. I also will and bequeath to my wife Jane my oxin and wagon and all my cattle (illegible) sheep hogs and all my household and kitchen furniture of every kind and all the mill irons and anything belonging to the mill I bought from J. Jones. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this 3rd day of Jan. 1852."
John Cagle (seal)
In presence of Benj. D. Gullick and W.W. CaseNC Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Henderson Co. June Session of 1854. The execution and publication of the foregoing will was duly proven in open court and admitted of Probate July 3rd 1854: R.W. Allen, CCC.
-------------------------------------------------------
No heirs are named in the estate settlement for Jane, 1856. Only bond, inventory and settlement are included. Jacob Cagle (propably son) was named special administrator.
I do not have a copy but it is abstracted in the book, "Abstract Henderson Co. NC Estate Records 1838-1900" by Kathleen Summers, 2002.
Buried in Henderson Co., NC. Will probated in Henderson Co., NC. According to census records it appears that John was moving around; however, that portion of old Rutherford Co., NC which became Buncombe Co in 1791, later became Henderson Co in 1938. So, though it appeared that John was moving around, it was actually the county lines being changed which created that appearance.

I apologize for coming into this discussion late, but I was wondering
who Eula Cagle's and Marcus Lafayette Cagle's grandparents and great

North Carolina January 6, 1837 but moved to Arkansas and that is where
he is found in the census in 1880. His father was Henry Cagle, born
1798, married to Catherine ? He was a teacher before he went into the
Civil War, but when he got out he went blind and was unable to teach.
I just wonder if my Joseph C. Cagle was connected to Eula and Marcus
Lafayette's ancestors.
Thanks, Kim

It doesn't take much to do that for me these days. I truly appreciate
it. I printed it out and am sending it to my Mom. I am only sorry we
didn't know Eula before now. She is first cousin to my Grgrandfather
Marcus Lafayette (Fate) Cagle. So wonderful when the newspaper prints
such nice articles like that with a picture esspecially. Thanks again!

Hello Cagle list. My name is Carl E. Queen. I am looking for any information
about my grandmother Tilda Cagle.
Tilda Cagle was born Feb 8, 1894. I have two places for her birth, one is a
census record that says she was born in Indiana and the second is her Death
Certificate that says she was born in Missouri. She died September 28 1920
in Franklin County Illinois from Tuberculosis. Her father is listed on the
death certificate as John Cagle. Also I have heard Tilda was an orphan and
may have lived with a family named Hawk before she married.
She married my grandfather Lee Roy Roth February 4, 1912 in Clarkton,
Dunklin County, Missouri. They had four children; one died at age 2, Anna
May, and the 2nd child was William Jacob Roth, third was my mother Thelma
Fay Roth and the fourth was Wilma Lee Roth.
I have tried the 1900 and 1910 census records but had no luck there.
The above is all the information I have about her, so I know it is a long
shot that anyone may have something about her but I am still going to ask.
Thank you and I will appreciate any help given.
Carl E. Queen
Hi Cousins,
I posted the obituary on Eula. I assist in managing a large 600 member
group for Transylvania County, NC, and search the obits daily for our many
members connections. Hendersonville is next door and has many of our family
there. I also read over 30 newspapers from all over the USA, and subscribe
to Obituary Daily from Rootsweb. Whenever I find family, especially a
Cagle, I forward it onto interested lists.
I erred in her age, it was 106 not 104.
Thanks for the additional information on this lovely lady.
Regards, Doyle Chambes

Isaac Benjamin Jacob Cagle was born in May 1866 in Warren Co., TN and was married, as you said, to Laura Matilda Curtis on 16 Apr 1888. They had 8 children and apparently, your mother descends form one of these.

In 1821, when McNairy was part of Hardin, Charles Cagle was appointed, with others, to lay out and maintain a road from Browns Ferry, I assume on the Tennessee River, to Able Oxford's place. I see from "Reminiscences of Early Settlement and Early Settlers" that the Oxford Place was about 7 miles south of Purdy. The 1830 census of McNairy Co. shows a Jacob Oxford, 20001-010001.
I have been told that Brown's Ferry was just south of the Shiloh Battlefield. Does anyone know where the Oxford place was? Charles Cagle bought and sold land in McNairy County in 1837 and 1838. Does anyone know this Charles Cagle and what happened to him?
Thanks,
David Cagle
Hardin County

Doyle,
I called Lee Waldon Cagle Jr in Washington and got an email from him yesterday: He didn't have a lot to say, but he did give me some genealogy data for his immediate family.
"yes, you got the e-mail address right. Am still sorting through a lot of this old info, but if I come across anything I will pass it on.
Your questions:
1. Brenda was born 3/7/39 in Kellogg, Idaho; Shoshone County
2. Brenda and I were married 8/5/61 in Spokane, WA right after I returned from Korea. We met in high school and both graduated from the Univ. of Wash.
3. Jeffrey Lee Cagle , son, born Seattle, WA; 10/30/64
4. Alan Ross Cagle, son, born Anchorage, Ak; 10/22/68
Lee, how about a little info about yourself. Such as married to, kids, occupation before you retired, etc.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Lee"
