My brother, J. Dale West, is an avid Civil War researcher and collecter and also a Cagle descendant as I am. I forwarded to him the email containing the photo of the Cagle name on the building and here is his reply.

Subject: Re: [CAGLE] Cagle Store Photo - Civil War Era
I have no idea where this store is. However, I can say, without question, that the soldiers are Yankee, not Confederate. This is clear from their dark blue jackets and light blue trousers. They might even be post Civil War as the uniform regulation of 1872 was very similar to the Civil War uniform.

Tom,
I am not aware of any such store in Tennessee. I guess however, that
doesn't mean there couldn't have been one. I note also that the soldiers
appear to be very neatly uniformed which would be rare in our area.

Judi,
I think most of us agree that Leonhart Kegel (Leonard Cagle), b. 1684, and
his first wife(?) Maria Elizabeth, had a daughter, Maria Margareta, born
1715, then Leonard with his 2nd wife, Susanna, had a son, Johan Theobald
"David" Cagle, b. 29 April 1728. I think most Cagle researchers believe
that Leonard came to America in 1732 and was responsible for the large
family of Cagles that lived in central PA, then moved to NC ca 1754. In
addition to those listed above, there may have been: John "Dutchman";
Henry; Leonard; and George. I have seen no birth dates for any of these
except David.
Do you have additional information on Nancy?
