Looking for further information on Barbara Cagle who resided in the household of John H. Taylor in Hancock county, Alabama in 1850. Barbara's age was given as 72 and her birthplace as North Carolina.
It's assumed that Barbara was the mother of John Taylor's wife, Eliza. Does anyone know if this is the relationship? Also, who was Barbara's husband?
Eliza was the aunt of my Mary Margaret Cagle. Mary was the wife of William Henry Stokes. She died prior to 1872. At that time William gave testimony regarding his losses during the Civil War. Eliza Taylor also gave testimony and stated that the claimant's (William) wife was her niece. She also spoke of William's wife in the past tense and the wife did not testify, so it is pretty clear the wife (Mary) was dead by March 1872 when testimony was given. There's been a lot of confusion about her as William Stokes remarried before he left Alabama for Arkansas, and his second wife's name was Mary. This second Mary had been married before as she had a daughter named Elizabeth, b. c1862 in TN.
It's been said that Mary Cagle Stokes was the daughter of Charles Cagle. Is there any proof that Charles was Eliza's sister and the son of Barbara? The only thing I'm really sure about is that Mary Stokes was Eliza Taylor's niece.
Thanks!
Juli

George and Charles spent a great deal of their lives in Mecklenburg-Cabarrus
area. Henry Jr, George and Charles came to Hardin Co., TN in the 1820's and
Henry Sr. joined them there in 1832-33 where he appears on an 1833 Tax List
of Hardin County. There were three Henry Cagles on the 1833 Tax List for
Hardin County--the two mentioned above and a third Henry Cagle and his son
James. This last Henry and James Cagle soon moved to North AL, Henry Sr,
died and Henry Jr and George moved to New Madrid Co., MO. John Cagle,
1813-1879, married a local and remained in Hardin County where I live as I
am writing this.

I've just joined the list. I had met Stella on another list and found out
she had Cagle's in her lineage. She offered to help me.
I'll tell you what I know about my Cagle's. My gggrandmother is Sarah
Cagle, married to Cornelius Diffee. They had their first child 12/19/1823
in Henderson Co, TN. The information given to me was that Sarah was born
about 1790 in TN. The only other notation for her is:
Sarah Cagle Diffee of Tippah Co, MS appointed William Cagle on April 18,
1823 to represent her in the settlement of the estate of her father, Henry
Cagle, in MOntgomery Co, NC.
Any help would sure be appreciated.

We do know some of the Cagle's are indeed Indian. I have picture of my gr gr
gr grandparents and it is the wife that is Indian. I have two picture's of my
family Charles Arter Cagle and his wife Lydia Margaret Standridge. Lydia is
Cherokee Indian Charles Arter Cagle mother was said by many of my family
member's to be Cherokee Inidan also she really looks like she is Indian to us. We do
have picture's of Charles Arter Cagle and Lydia Margaret Standridge Cagle,
have a picture of Charles father Henry Edward Cagle and Martha Isabel Pine Tree
Cagle and also have picture of Charles Cagle and wife Susannah Cagle (they do
not look like they have any Indian in them??. Just got the picture's of Henry
and Martha and Charles & Susannah Cagle from a cousin. These picture's were not
like real pictures they were more like some kind of a black drawing. 14 X 16
both of them still in there old fram's. My cousin had another cousin take
them and they were able to shrink them so they made a few copies for Harold and
me they are a great find. I have not had a DNA test but someday would like to
have one done My daughter had a DNA test done a long time ago but had to look
for the papers.

Thanks for your reply!
Do you know for sure if you have any Cherokee blood?
I have a few initial theories on my story. On Ancestry.com I see that Henry Carson Cagle married Amy Elizabeth Gentry on Feb. 16, 1872 and my Great grandmother, Hattie Crittington Cagle was born Jan. 25, 1872, one month before their marriage. I know this doesn't prove anything, but it's possible that Hattie was conceived by someone else. Maybe a husband who died before she gave birth? Who knows?
Anythings possible...
Take care...Sheila Tilden

Nearly every Cagle line I've encountered has a story that one of their ancestors is a full-blood Cherokee. I've been on these boards for several years now and I'm amazed at how many Cagle lines have this same story - mine included! I wonder if this comes simply from the fact that our ancestors settled in Cherokee country? You know how those family legends grow over the generations!

Hi Nancy,
I've been perplexed for so long about my ancestry on my dad's side and who's who, especially Martha Pine Tree.
My parent's have told me that my dad's mother, Julia Blythe, was half Cherokee Indian; and I just received my results from my ancestry DNA today and to my surprise I'm 97% European and 3% East Asian.
Wow, to think my entire life that I'm part Cherokee and to find out today that I'm 0% Native American is a strange feeling.
Have you ever had your DNA testing done? How does anyone in this family line even know if Martha Pine Tree was a Cherokee Indian?
There is the possibility that someone in my direct line was a child by someone other than who we all think.
Anyhow, any information you may have would be appreciated...Sheila Tilden
