There was an Amos Anderson father of Erwin or Irvin Anderson, Irvin is buried at Sardis Lake, Broken Bow, Okla. He had a son, Daryl born at Monahans, Texas. I cannot link Amos to Miss Johnnie Cagle. Help is appreciated.
Hello All,
I've been hanging around on the net for a few years, but am brand new to
the mailing list. Here's my line: me8 (Dekota R.7, Charley B.6,
William H.5, Eli4, Leonard3, Charles2, Leonard The Immigrant1). I am
interested in hearing from anyone looking at any of these lines,
especially family of Leonard b.1770. I will gladly share what I have,
though much early stuff is borrowed from a great variety of sources with
little (or no) confirmation.
I have noticed that (like many families) there is a great deal of
disagreement as to some relationships in the early family. I will bring
some of these up for discussion in the future because I'd like to get
some of this sorted out. My personal policy is to accept the findings
of John G. Cagle, unless someone proves otherwise to my satisfaction
(which I fully anticipate will occur in some cases).
I put all descendants of Leonard the Immigrant that I come across into
my database (FTM v10), so I'll be interested to hear all of your lines.
Ok. First question: Why does everyone put Leonard Wagonmaker 1780 as
son of John Dutchman or David, while John G. Cagle has him as son of
Jacob 1755? Anyone got proof of any of these possible fathers?
Damon T. Cagle

Do you have any dates of birth or marriage of Johnnie Cagle
or Amos Anderson. Where did the marriage take place?
Hi Delanie,
I'm glad you think that Matildy Stoakes' grave is Mary Margaret Stokes, too. (You're the one I always point to when someone wants to know how to "do genealogy right!" <g>) There are just too many coincidences in location, dates, name for it to be anyone else. I've looked for a Matilda and couldn't find one, which strengthens the case for the grave's belonging to Mary.
Do you think that it's possible that Charles Cagle was Mary's father? Again, proximity, etc. would seem to suggest it. A shame all those county records are gone.
Juli

I also descend from the Stokes line. The Mary listed in Clay Co., AR is
a second marriage for William Stokes. This is Mary E. Stokes. The
daughter, Elizabeth, is most likely her daughter.
I have been to Winston County twice now (just returned yesterday from my
2nd trip). Interestingly, even thought the court house burned in the
1880s, many land entries were recorded after that. I found quite a few
Stokes recordings from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. From this and
other records we know:
1867: Voters List. Winston Co., AL. Stokes, William, 8 Sep 1807,
Cass County, Georgia
1869: William & Mary Stokes sell 80 acres to H.K. Self. 4/10/1869.
1870: Census. Winston Co., AL. Age 62. (Ancestry pg 28)
1877: William & Mary E. Stokes sold 390 acres for $500 to John L.
Wilson. Dated 10/13/1877.
1877: Moves to Clay Co., AR per Goodspeed article.
I do truly believe that the Matildy Stokes buried in Union Grove is Mary
Margaret. The existing stone is a replacement for the original. In
looking carefully at what is left of the original, it looks like she
might have been born in September.
Also, I talked to a living g-grandson of William through George's line.
He doesn't know much about the line but is going to give my information
to one of his daughters that does research for their family. He said
that his family was Dutch-Irish which coincides with a bio on William B.
Stokes that says:
"He was born at Tremont, Mississippi (known then as Stone's Crossroads)
of Dutch-Irish ancestry. Mr. Stokes studied math at home. The books were
printed in Dutch and at the age of eight years he was able to work any
problem dealing with the fundamentals of arithmetic."
That's about it. Doesn't help much with the Cagle part though.

Subject: [CAGLE] Northeast Alabama Cagles
Hello CAGLE list!
I'm a new subscriber to the list and wanted to share the CAGLE lines I
am researching. I have two CAGLE lines, one on both sides of my family,
but I will post them in separate e-mails to keep confusion down!
I have very little information on my northeast Alabama CAGLEs. Mary
Margaret CAGLE was born about 1818 in North Carolina (according to
census info) and died about 1870, probably in Alabama. She married
William Henry STOKES around 1838, probably in Alabama. We know that
Mary Margaret's name was CAGLE through William Stokes' testimony on
losses he sustained during the Civil War. Part of the testimony came
from Eliza E. TAYLOR, wife of John Taylor. Eliza was a CAGLE before her
marriage...at one time her mother, Barbara CAGLE was living in Eliza's
household. Eliza stated that William Stokes' wife was her niece, and
she was visiting her niece at the time the Union forces took the Stokes'
provisions. The troops came through in 1865, and Mary Margaret was
alive at that time, and also appeared on the 1860 and 1870 censuses for
Winston County, AL, but by the time Eliza gave testimony in March of
1872, Mary Margaret was evidently dead, since Eliza always referred to
her in past!
tense. In 1880 in Clay County, AR, William Stokes' wife was listed as
Mary, but the age was drastically different than Mary Margaret's. There
has also been a grave found in Union Grove Cemetery in Winston County,
AL, very close to where William Stokes lived in 1870. The original
gravestone was broken, but can be read as Matildy Stoakes
1818-11/20/1870. We don't know if this is our gal or not.
Does anyone know who Mary Margaret's parents were? I sure would
appreciate any help.
