Robin,
My grandfather was a Jerry Cagle. I recall hearing my dad
talking about an Aunt Fannie. I would appreciate any info
you could pass on to me. My dad's name was Carl, one of five children
would appreciate any...............
I am not sure the subject Jerry Ray Cagle, b. 21 May 1942 is your Jerry;
however, you
furnished so very little information. When and where was your
grandfather and father
born. What are your grandmother's and mother's names. What are the
names of the
five children of Carl?
If your Jerry Cagle is from Navarro County, Texas or that vicinity, there
is a good chance
this may be him. If so, I have his ancestry back to 1683. If not, maybe
one of the other
Jerrys (I have 14) will be the right one.

P.S. Was your Aunt Fannie named Mary Frances "Fannie"
Margaret and List:
Thanks for reminding me of the story. I know others will find it
interesting just as I did the first time I read it. This story relates
to Matthew
Cagle, b. 1835, son of George and Elizabeth M Williams Cagle.
The son of Matthew mentioned in the following story was James M Cagle, b.
1871 who would have been 18 years of age on the date of
the fire. I am sure this was a well remembered story and repeated many
times during the coming years.
Stories like this help to lend a human interest to what sometimes becomes
just names and statistical data. I would like to hear more of
these stories if anyone has them. Remember what may be old news to you
is probably interesting and new to someone else.
Thanks again, Margaret.

NEWS ITEM FROM THE CARTHAGE BLADE, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12,1889
MOORE COUNTY COURT HOUSE BURNED
The Fire Thought to be of Incendiary Origin, Estimated Loss $15,000
All the records in the Register's and Supt. Instructions' offices and
about half of those in the Clerks's office were wiped out of existence.
At 4 o'clock a.m. last Thursday the usually quiet town of Carthage was
thrown into wild excitement by being awakened from its slumbers by the
ringing of bells and the loud cries of FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!!
Every household was in a stir in a jiffy, and in a very few seconds
men, women and children could be seen rapidly hastening toward the point
from which the alarm came. The fire proved to be at the Court House. We
were among the first to arrive on the scene, and found the Register's
office a solid sheet of flames from back to front. There being no fire
department and the fire already having such headway, everyone seemed
appalled and knew not what to do. Finally some thought of the Clerk's
office and passed the word that good work could be done there. A rush
was made for that office and the crowd worked manfully and succeeded in
saving many valuable records, but they had to work rapidly, as the angry
flames soon reached that door. The loss from this office was about 500
judgment rolls, all probate papers, most of the old court minutes and
dockets, all guardian books and bonds, all administrator's bond books,
all Supreme Court reports and Acts of the Legislature. All !
other books and papers are saved.
Every paper and book in the Register's office, including the 1889 tax
books (which had not yet been quite finished) was lost. So was
everything in the County Superintendent's office also lost. As there was
little in the Sheriff's office, there was nothing lost.
After the fire had spent its fury, we found MR. MATHEW CAGLE, an
"upperend" farmer, who was camping on the public square about 50 or 75
yards distant from the Court House and who gave the alarm, upon inquiry
as to the origin of the fire, we elicited the following information from
him. He said, "About 2 hours before the fire broke out I noticed a light
about as large as that of a candle in the Register of Deed's office. I
thought nothing of the circumstance, and again went to sleep. The next
thing I heard, my son called me and said the Court House was on fire. I
hurriedly ran up there and into the building and noticed that the fire
was issuing from the Register's office door. I pushed the door, which
was slightly ajar, open and saw a large pile of books burning very
rapidly as if saturated with oil or spirits of turpentine. I ran to the
public well to get water, and believe I could have stopped the fire with
a few buckets of water, but found the ropes cut and the buc!
kets in the well. I then gave the alarm. Before the fire broke out I
heard someone walking in the Register's office." Two or three other men
who got there just after MR. CAGLE substantiate what he says. Therefore,
we have no doubt that the fire was the work of an incendiary. And it was
evidently someone who wanted to be rid of some paper that was on record
against him. The fact that the well rope was cut in the strongest
circumstance of incendiarism.
The Court House was almost new, having been put in thorough repair and
enlarged about two years ago. The building was worth about $15,000,
$5,500 of which is yet to be paid. The loss is a heavy blow to the
county and no end of litigation will result from it.
Note--
The above was copied at the Moore County Library on 6 November
1986 by James Vann Comer.
On 25 November 1986 there appeared in the Southern Pines Pilot in the
Carthage section edited by Woodrow Wilhoit a similar article about the
same event--the fire of 1889. Mr. Wilhoit had recently read an article
written in 1922 by Mr. Jacob Fulton Cole in which he recalled the night
vividly. He too had been sleeping nearby, in the back room of the little
drug store on the circle, and was one of those who helped MR. CAGLE save
papers out of the Clerks's office. He too told about the cut ropes of
the well that prevented any water being used to quench the fire. He also
mentioned the reason MR. CAGLE was there on the grounds--the farmer had
brought a load of hay to town and needed to stay with it till delivered
the next morning.
This news article by Mr. Cole can be seen in the issue of the Moore
County News of 27 July 1922. Two other men named as helpers were Ralph
Tyson and W H Branson. Cole remembered A H McNeill, who had been Clerk
of Court for many years, saying that as a small boy he helped make brick
for the old court house for thirty cents a day.

BlankHi
Just a update on a Congressman having Fox and Cagle roots:
Congressman Franks is a first term Republican representing the 2nd Congressional District in the State of Arizona. His maternal grandmother is Mae Fox Carr, b. 1913, the daughter of James Fox and Laura M. Cagle. FYI Laura M. Cagle is first seen at age 2 in the 1880 census of Alexandra, IL with her parents Henry P. Keggle (Cagle) and wife Catherine (Warner). The marriage license for Laura's parents show it being issued on Aug 24, 1865 in Johnson Co IL. James Fox is first seen in the 1880 Whitley Co KY census as being age 6 with his parents Jo(e) Fox age 26 and Elisa age 24. The marriage licenses for James Fox and Laura Cagle show that it was issued on Sept 27th, 1894 in the county of Whitley in KY and that the ceremony took place on the 30th. Included with the court house papers is a handwritten letter from H.P. Cagle giving permission for the underage Laura to marry. The document identifies the parents of the groom, James Fox, as being Joe and Eliza Fox of Whitley Co!
unty KY. The oldest child of this union was Joseph William Fox, Sr., b 1897, my grandfather, and the youngest is the Congressman's grandmother Mae Fox Carr.

The following Cagles are buried at Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington,
Texas:
CAGLE, Pauline BURLESON and Robert Lee
CAGLE, Pearlie Lee 1910-1985
CAGLE, Ronald Lee 1947-1989, US Navy, Vietnam
Can anyone connect the above persons to their main branch of the Cagle
tree.

Bette,
Sisters, Malinda and Emaline, married James Riley Cagle, Dec 1824.
He is the son of Charles and Martha Johnson Cagle. I am not aware
of this Charles having a wife Nancy.
Alias/Aloysius/Ellis Cagle has been shown in various records as
any one of Alias/Aloysius/Ellis. He was born 15 Mar 1837, d.
22 Sep 1875.
I will post the updated Cagle GEDCOM to the list soon; however,
it will not include living persons. For living person data you will
have to contact me and I will refer your questions the them, so they
may or may not respond, as they wish. I am still working on it, but
should be posting to rootsweb within the next 60days.

This along with the following census would seem to confirm his DOB. Of
course, this means
he is the son of mother UNKNOWN, rather than Sarah Bruer.
