BlankHello list
Starting with Jacob, Rev. War Solider, I have a trail to his son Henry, to
Henry's son Henry P. (H.P.), his daughter Laura M. by his 4th wife, to
Laura's son Joseph William by husband James Fox, to Joe's daughter Una C.,
to me, Dr. Joseph H. Childress. My father's name was Earl.
That aside, I have noted during the roll call the long list of folks all
tracing their heritage back to Germany. It almost seems that every Cagle, at
least those on this list, started in Germany. It sure is easy to see one of
these line and say that must be mine too and hook right on. It is
comfortable. I wonder how many on the list would like to see if they truly
sons of Germany or what?
Let me tell you what is going on with some of the other list on the net. The
Childers/Childress list has recently started to get into DNA testing of the
Y (male chromosome). To date we have 20+ who have been willing to put out
the c$160.00 to be tested and the results have been eye opening. First this
is done only on the Males as that is where the Y chromosome is and the
mutation of the chromosome only occurs about every 500 years, so we can
group families quiet well. We will not know the exact paper trail but we
can determine if we are related. In the early result about 85% of those
tested have shown to a high degree of certainty that they are related. It
did not matter how the named was spelled it only matter if the chromosome
markers matched with a high degree of certainty. I.E. these folks carrying
the chromosome may well have a common origin or ancestor. Well what of the
other 15% our test. One is a group unto his self as he has no matches
within the big Childress/Childers group. The other, which includes me, has a
match with a 4th cousin and we expected this as we have a paper trail back
to a common ggg-grandfather. He and I have brothers so we have a group of
four without testing the brothers. What surprised us is not matching at all
with most other Childresses. We have discussed the possibility of an
adoption event, such as a male stepchild taking on the Childress name back
in Great Britain. Another possibility was that my family seemed to be strong
in the saddlemaking trade and perhaps an apprentice took on the family name.
Regardless, it is good as we have such a small group we may be able to
determine if a person is or is not part of our line since it came to the
U.S. We also can perhaps determine if we match up with a line with a
different surname in G.B.
If the male Cages and its various spelling changes got together and formed
a large enough group to do a DNA study the result may be quite fun. Cousins
by any name are still cousins.! DNA is simply another tool and it has turned
out to be more fun than expected in my surname group.

Lee, thanks so much for the information. I'm interested in how you decided Isaac Robert was the son of Robert Jr, I've not been able to locate any proof, just circumstantial proof. Don't get me wrong, I'm not questioning any information you have am just interested in how you connected them.
Isaac was married to Gillie Ann Owen when he died. That was his only marriage unless he was married before he married Gillie Ann, he was 23 when they married and she was 17. He died in Phillips Co., AR after being kicked by a mule in the chest. He is buried in Graceland Cemetery in Pine Bluff, Jefferson Co., AR and was carried by railroad from Phillips Co to Pine Bluff for burial.
Just a couple of corrections in the family information:
Gillie Ann died Oct 31, 1956 in Pine Bluff. The 1936 was probably a typo that someone made.
Mamie Ann Cagle was born Dec 7, 1891 and was married to Walter Franklin Harris also from Lincoln Co b. 1889 died 1960. They had 1 son Durward Franklin Harris b Feb 6, 1915 died Dec 1, 1937.
Grace Cagle Poss b Jan 30, 1904 d Sept 24, 1961 she m Malcom L Poss Feb 22, 1922.
If you have any questions please let me know.
Thanks so much for your help!!!!!

Yes, I am saying that.
Robert who was present early in the Perry/Decatur Co. area of TN, and who is believed, although not conclusively proven, to be the son of Leonard Cagle, 1730s-1800s. Robert, Simon and Paul, unlike the other known and presumed sons of Leonard Cagle and wife Susannah Richardson, are not known to appear in the county records in either Montgomery Co., NC or Clarke Co., GA, where Leonard Cagle and sons lived during the late 1790s and early 1800s. Rather, Robert, Simon and Paul do not begin to appear in the records until the decade of the 1810s, by which time they were already located in western Tennessee.
Robert Cagle first appears in Stewart Co., TN, during the era of 1810-15, and, after a single known appearance in Hickman Co., TN in the late 1817/8, is found in the records of Perry and Decatur Cos., TN from the year 1820 until his death in the mid 1850s. Robert's two oldest sons, it is believed, were born in North Carolina in the 1805-09 era, after which he migrated to Tennessee and located for some five years in Stewart County. His appearances in the record books of Stewarf Co can be summarized as follows: 1810 thru 1812, Tax lists; 1813-1814, Jury Duty; 1815 appointed as a part of a road crew;
1815, Jury Duty. During the time Robert was in Stewart Co., TN, his presumed brothers David, Charles, Henry, Simon and Paul Cagle were establishing residence in Hickman County, and Robert joined them there in 1817.
Robert was not selected for jury duty in Stewart Co in 1816 and may have already began his move to
Hickman Co., TN where on March 25, 1817, Robert makes his only known appearance in the records of Hickman Co., when he, along with Daniel Forsee, witnessed the sale of a slave by John Bird Sr to Valentine Flowers. In Jan 1818, Robert and Daniel Forsee also confirmed their signatures before the county court, and the deed was ordered to be recorded in Hickman Co., Deed Book D, page 6. The chances seem to be good that Robert Cagle, at the time of the 1817 deed did not live within the boundaries of modern Hickman Co., but in the western part of Hickman which was made into Perry Co in 1818, for Robert was enumerated in the New County of Perry in the Federal Census of 1820:
1820 Census, Hickman Co., TN pg. 014
Cagle, David 110001-4211
Henry 00001-10111
Simon 10001-2001
1820 Census, Perry Co., TN pg. 004
Cagle, Paul 100011-101
Robert 120001-0
The listing for Robert Cagle shows him in the 45+ age bracket, but this may be an error, since the 1850 Census of Decatur Co., TN later lists Robert at age 67 in that year (born 1783). No females are listed in Robert's household in 1820, and it would appear his first wife (name unknown) had died, leaving him with three young sons, two of which were in the 10-16 age bracket and the third in the under 10 bracket. It is believed the three sons were Robert Cagle Jr., 1805-1875, who later migrated to Stone Co.,
AR, Paul Cagle, born 1806-09 era and died after 1880, who later migrated to Attala Co., MS, and John David Cagle, born 1810s and died after 1880, who remained in and around the Perry/Decatur Co., region of Tennessee. During the 1820s Robert Sr married Jemima (surname unknown), and had two additional children, Henry C Cagle and Elizabeth Cagle.
Near the time of the 1820 Census, Robert appeared in another document in Perry Co., when he joined John Cagle, Paul Cagle and many other residents of Perry County in signing a petition of June 18, 1820 to the Tn House of Rep., regarding the south boundary line of adjacent Humphreys Co., as well as a
need for a polling place for that part of Perry Co which lay to the west of the Tennessee River.
Robert bought land from Moses Christenbury on Dec 31, 1845, as recorded in Deed Book 1, page 8.
He sold this land 2 yrs later to George M Baber, as recorded in Deed Bk 1, pg 80. Robert appears a
third time in Deed Book 1, page 173, when on Dec 18, 1848, he sold assorted livestock and household goods to his son, Henry C. Cagle, for $200.
Robert lived in Stewart, Perry and Decatur Cos, TN and appearred in the 1850 census of Decatur.
In the early 1850's Robert Cagle Sr applied for a land grant in Decatur Co Tn.. In the Decatur County, Tn Chancery Court Enrolling Docket, Vol 1 pp. 98-99 states that on the first day of April 1856, there was granted by the State of Tn to Robert Cagle Sen. 110 acres of land lying and being in Decatur County by
Grant No 15380, i Range 8 Section 1.
On December 10, 1868, Roger Gibson filed a complaint in Decatur County Tn Chancery Court Enrolling Docket, Vol. 1 pp. 98-99 against Paul Cagle, a resident of the State of Mississippi and Robert Cagle Jr, a Resident of the State of Arkansas to force a sale of this property as one unit.
In this complaint brought by Roger Gibson, husband of Elizabeth Cagle, the complainant states that after said Land was so Granted, the said Robert Cagle Sr died, leaving the Defendants Paul Cagle and Robert Junior, David Cagle, Henry C.Cagle and Elizabeth Cagle, his only Children and Heirs at Law.
Records show the land was divided 5 ways. David and Elizabeth sold their shares to Henry C Cagle, giving him 3/5 of the land. Later, Henry C Cagle sold this 3/5 share back to Roger Gibson, the husband of Elizabeth Cagle.
1830 Census, Perry Co., TN pg.237
Cagle, Robert
011001-011101
For a 15 year period 1830 census to the time of the formation of Decatur Co., in late 1845, no records
exist for Robert Cagle 1783-1856 in Perry Co., TN. This is possibly due to the loss of records resulting
from the court house fire, although it might also, be considered whether Robert was absent from the county during this period. During this period, however, his sons, Robert Jr., Paul and David make a
number of appearances in Hardeman and McNairy Cos., TN, and in Arkansas and Mississippi. It might
be noted, Robert is absent from the 1837 Tax List of Perry Co., which is the only early tax list known to survive the fire for Perry County; however, Paul Cagle, Robert's brother is included on the list.
Perry Co., TN Deed Book #1, Nov 1845 thru 1852 records on page 8, Robert who bought land from Moses Christenbury on 31 Dec 1845. Robert sold this land two years later to George M Baber as
recorded on page 80 of the same book. Robert appears a third time on page 173, when on 18 Dec 1848,
he sold assorted livestock and household goods to his son, Henry C Cagle, for $200.
Robert, in November 1846 made an entry for a land grant of 110 1/2 acres in Rang 8, Section 1, in the northern end of Decatur County. The tract was surveyed on Nov 26, 1846, and granted to on Jan 1, 1855,
as Grant No 15144, as recorded in Land Grant Book 19, p.985. It is unclear why two grants were issued for the same tract, unless Robert had made entries in both Perry and Decatur Cos. during the 1840s, during the time when Decatur was being created from the western end of Perry. Robert died shortly
after the grant ws made, either in late 1856 or in the early part of 1857, and each of his children inherited a 1/5 share of the grant. In a series of deeds and document, dating from 1857 through 1874, this property was eventually sold outside the family.

Hi Cagle list,
Has anyone researched Robert Cagle m Anna and was in the 1870 census of 1870 Henderson TN census. In the 1880 census Annie Cagill was listed in Henderson TN. The 1870 census lists an Isaac Cagle age 8 and the 1880 census lists an I.R. Cagill. I am hoping to find information on this family and see if anyone knows what happened to this Isaac.
My Isaac Robert Cagle could possibly be this one. The date on his headstone says 1866, but could he possibly been wrong about the year he was born?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Melva
Liz,
I have not been able to identify these Cagles yet. It would be helpful to
know where they were born.

Hello List,
I have come across some Cagle's that I am unable to place. Will someone please tell me where they belong.
It was listed in Prentiss County, Mississippi
Here they are:
William E. Cagle head of house age 27 years
wife Sarah age 26
son William B. age 7
daughter Ruby L. age 4
Then there's:
William A. Cagle head of house age 54
wife Elizabeth age 49
daughter Dizzie age 22
daughter Carrie J. age 17
daughter Elsie A. age 14
son L. C.? age 12
son Kirksie age 9
Not sure abt. this name. It looked like:
Pierge W. Cagle head of house age 21
wife Maggie L. age 19
son Dalton age 1 month
Murry H. Cagle head of house age 25
wife Barmel? age 26
son Wilber B. age 10 months
Thanks in advance for the info. Liz Cagle
