Does anyone have a list of Joseph Roland Cagle's children?
I'm on the trail of my Hill line and came across a Joseph Cagle in the 1850
GA census. Wondering if this is the same as Joseph Roland. It only lists
initials for family members though so I couldn't identify anyone.
They were neighbors with a Bridwell Hill and am hoping these might be my
Hills since one of Joseph's children married Rachel Hill. She was born
between censuses (is that a word?) and isn't the 1860 census one that was
partially lost?
Am I rambling? :-) Hope someone understands what I mean.

The other day we wrote about our favorite genealogy software. Mine as I
said is Family Tree Maker by Broderbund. This was in my opinion a fine
company. At some point they were bought out by Genealogy.Com. I have
always been in favor of free genealogy. Now I see that Genealogy Com is
charging for records of peoples family tree's. For $9.95 a month you can
access information that was uploaded for free by that persons World
Tree. Although I thought about uploading mine to FamilyTree Maker a few
years ago I didn't. I must say I am glad now I didn.t. More than likely
there was some small print giving them permission to sell your
genealogy. Well mine is not for sale but I will share it with you
"free". We don't get much, if anything for free anymore do we? Rootsweb
sponsors this list and has been able to maintain free genealogy. They
have done more than anyone I know of. Not only do they share free
genealogy records thousands of people have donated, they will teach you
how to get started. There are other plaes online that also have free
genealogy records. Thank's go to all the many people over the years who
have taken the time to transcribe records. My wife & I have done this &
I encourage all of you to do so also.

Dear Cagle List,
I am presently doing research on my husband's birth family. His father was
Charles Cagle listed in the descendant chart below. He was given up for
adoption when he was a baby. I am hoping someone on this list will see
where these Cagles fit into the big picture of Cagles. If anyone can help
me I would greatly appreciate it.

Actually, I believe it does allow for adulterous type relationships. In the
drop down box where "married" appears for date/place, you have seven choices
to identify the relationship: Friends, Married, Other, Partners, Private,
Single, Unknown. Then you can give further explanation in the "Marriage
Notes" if you like.

Ha???I'm afraid you do not know how to work FTM. You can place the children
with which ever set of parents you want. You need to select (mark) a
preferred set of parents for the program to normally show and which we will
presume are your ancestors. But...the other set(s) of parents can have as
many children as can be properly identified. Unfortunately, we do not always
know enough dates and other information to make a proper evaluation. FTM
does not allow for adulterous relationships, but that does not prohibit you
from establishing these relationships and marking them accordingly in the

Gene Cagle asked preference for programs working on Genealogy. I use Family
Tree Maker and found it helpful. It makes the charts for you pedigrees,
family groups and it has an automatic backup. One drawback I find with their
program is if a man had two wives, it wants to place all the kids with one
and if you choose one or the other it will say these children are too old for
this wife and if you choose the older it will say this mother is too old for
these children. Ha Bettye Vann Knight
This is in reply to Gene Cagle about family tree data files. I use two
different files. One is a free download from the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, and it is called PAF (Personal Ancestry File) and the
other is the Family Tree Maker. I prefer the PAF program, since I am just
learning how to use the Family Tree Maker. The PAF program will give you
reminders as to when to back up your files on a disk. Hope this helps.

My old Family Tree Maker program still works great. I don't remember
what version it is but, it is the first one they came out with.
Old but works fine!! Kinda like me:)

Like many others, I have tried several programs. My favorite, and the one
that I always return to is Generations Family Tree by Sierra. I have used
Family Tree Maker off and on for years - all the way up to the current
version, 10. I tried The Master Genealogist - hated the source entry
portion. I keep returning to Generations because I love the layout of the
family - on one page you have the couple, ALL of their children and both
sets of the couple's parents.

i have been compiling all the names and families of the Cagles that i can
find from 1900 back. in time, i had collected almost 3000 names and about
1700 families.
but alas, a virus did me and my data in!
using sierra's Family Tree, i backed up the data to the hard drive (lost when
the tech reformatted without saving the files i requested), and the ged file
i sent to a floppy disc was corrupted, BUT THERE IS HOPE!
i also saved the data in a *.dat file for Mac users.
IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE USING A MAC THAT I COULD E MAIL AN ATTACHMENT TO,
IMPORT INTO A MAC "TREE" PROGRAM AND THEN EXPORT IN A *.GED FILE FOR ME TO
USE IN AN IBM "TREE" PROGRAM???????
also, what is the most popular and "best" "tree" program in
use?........opinions please

The way you presented the data was just fine. You should always try to
include info. such as
who transcribed & or cpyrighted it, where it is posted, any accompanying

Lee,
After my hasty post, I felt I should take some time in my reply so that I
don't post careless errors.
You have my George Wiltz correctly identified as George Wilson Cagle. We
just never refer to him by his formal name. I should tell you, I have
done very little research on the Cagle family, I simply grew up among
many descendants of William Hodge Cagle, Sr. [and married one of them].
I will add some to your data, but you may have this information already
in your database. I also have descendants of each of W. H. Sr.'s
children if you are missing them. William Hodge, Jr. was my
Father-in-law. His father was not sure of his own birth date or year,
having never learned to read or write. I realize this is contrary to
census records, but I can only guess that Metta, a school teacher, did
not want to admit her husband was lacking these skills. According to
Aunt Mary, it posed few problems for him, as he was a successful farmer
and his skills at math were such that no one could cheat him of a penny.
I was happy to get the information about W. H.'s enlistment in the
Confederate army. Malissa Almetta Cagle was one of the last two
Confederate widows of Coahoma County. She is my husband's grandmother
through William Hodge Cagle, Jr. She received a widow's pension but I
have been unable to duplicate the record of her application. Her
original proofs were lost when her home burned.
George Franklin Cagle mother's name is Elizabeth Williams. Also, I show
two more
daughters born following George Franklin Jr. Cagle. True, but not by his
first wife, Ivey Ramsey. [You have Ida, Aunt Mary says Ivey, but
remember, she is 94. Now, she thinks the second wife was called Ida, but
no longer sure. Wife #2 had a daughter, Mary Lucille Cagle. [See notes
below.]married Ida Ramsey, b. 1892, Attala Co., Mississippi. I do not
show a date of death, but it would have been after 1919 when Mildred was
born. [Where did you find Mildred? We know nothing about her.] Or, he
married immediately following the death of Ida Ramsey, and the daughters
are the children of wife #2. If this is the case would you let me know.
This is what I have on this family. Would you please verify it against
your data and tell me of any differences. If you notice information
missing, I would appreciate it if you would advise me of that too.

Notes for James Cagle:
[James and his younger sister came with their grandmother to live in a
house on William Hodge Cagle's property. The grandmother [Edgerton or
Edmonton?] died leaving the children without family. W. H. found a
couple in Clarksdale Mississippi who legally adopted the girl but didn't
want the boy. W. H. took James and treated him as his son. This is
family lore from Mary Cagle Spurry, youngest child of W. H. and Almetta
Carroll. Sadly, the 1890 census might have been helpful in learning more
about James' birth family. Aunt Mary says he was small and of slender
build.]
**Could James Cagle's grandmother's name have been Brockton instead
of Edmonton. I notice he named his second child John Gardner Brockton
Cagle.**

More about George Franklin Cagle, Sr
Married 1. Ivey Ramsey, d. 9 Sep 1912 [Aunt Mary may be confused about
given names of these first two wives.] One child: George Franklin
Cagle, Jr b. 9 Sep 1912, m. Frances B. Kilpatrick
Married 2. Ida unknown, One child: Mary Lucille Cagle.
Note for Mary Lucille: She was raised by her uncle, John Cagle because
her mother was in a mental institution for a long time.
Married 3. Geneva unknown, At least two children: Son died young,
daughter Tommie Dale Cagle married a Pitkin or Pipkin and lived in New
York. [Aunt Mary doesn't remember any one named Mildred.]
Note for George Franklin: "Big George" and Geneva were living on the SW
corner of Cagle Crossroads when he died. George, who had been hunting
one night, sat backed against a tree and fell asleep. The weather turned
bitter cold, he suffered from exposure and never recovered.
A little about the area of Coahoma County settled by the Cagle brothers:
There is a road running south for more than 5 miles from Dublin to the
Coahoma/Tallahatchie line. Cherry Hill Cemetery is located on both sides
of this road. George "Wiltz", Linsey, and Mary Cagle Adams owned most
of the property along the last two or three miles before the road was
made. Called Dog Walk Road, it is said to have started as a hunting
trail made by Wiltz's hunting dogs, became a wagon track as land was
cleared for farming, and today is a paved county road.
I was born in an old log house along this road. I never knew that first
generation of Cagle men, but heard stories about them as a child growing
up in the Dog Walk Community.
There is a parallel road, one mile west, on which William Hodge had his
property. The road ran through the middle of it, and a second, east west
road connected it with Dog Walk. [Today known as Willis Road, it was
called the Roundaway road when I was young.] W. H. owned parcels of land
on both sides of the east-west road as well, which is how Cagle
Crossroads came to be. Bit by bit, the land was lost for unpaid taxes,
etc. but William Hodge,Sr managed to give at least 40 acres to each of
his children. The northwest corner of the Crossroads was eventually used
for a community church, serving both Methodist and Baptist congregations
on alternate Sundays. Known as Cagle Crossroads Union Church for many
years, the name was later changed to Union Chapel [after most Cagle's had
left the community]. Cagle Crossroads Cemetery is located on Dog Walk
Road at the site of old Hill School about 1 1/2 mile north of the Willis
/Dog Walk intersection.
I hope I have given some helpful information and not rambled on too much.
If you think any of this would be useful to someone, feel free to copy
part or all of it to the list. If you have any questions, Aunt Mary and
I will try to answer where we are able. If you any ideas on how to find
a copy of William Hodge Cagle's pardon from President Lincoln, I would be
happy to know how to begin. All family records of his service were
burned in a house fire in the early 1950's. I would like to duplicate
the proofs upon which Malissa Almetta Cagle's pension was granted. I
have been unable to find even her application.

Hi George and Olene,
I have been receiving the Journals since the introductory copy was
published and am still a subscriber. In all these years, at least once and
perhaps twice, my Journals were lost in the mail and John graciously sent
them a second time. Otherwise, I have not missed a single Journal. He is so
overwhelmed in the number of things he is doing that often the journals
arrive late, but they always arrive, sometimes two or three quarters at a
time. John also receives a great volume of mail and on my last visit with
him he assured me that he answers every letter though sometimes the answer
may be months later. I guess my best advice is "wait patiently," they are
worth waiting for!
