One of my favorite genealogy books is :
"A Guide to County and Municipal Records on Microfilm" published by
Missouri State Archives. It lists all possible records avaliable, and a
breakdown of what is avaliable in each county. On this morning's news
from St. Louis, there was a trivia question. This explained that there
was a "Bachelor Tax" enacted December 20, 1820. Any man who remained a
bachelor, had to pay $1.00 a year tax. This was for men 21-50 yrs. old.
This tax remained in effect until 1850. They wanted to populate the
territory, and if you didn't get hitched you payed a tax:)

I made a mistake when speaking of John Cagle son of David Cagle. He was the
son of Valentine Cagle son of David Cagle son of Leonard Cagle. This is the
one born in 1798 and moved to Winston County Alabama and md Sarah Ann Lovett.
Many of his close kin moved with him also. The other John that stayed on the
land he inherited from his father may have been son of William son of Henry.

Earl, does this note help in finding the "widow Mary"? I have lots
preseeding this if you don't have it. )

NC Notes for Mary Unknown:
Charles did not appear in the 1800 Census of Montgomery Co., NC;
however, Mary did. It is not known
why Charles was skipped. He is known to have died in 1801 and his estate
papers of 1803 note that a Leonard Cagle served as the administrator of
his estate. It might be assumed that this was his brother, the Leonard
Cagle of the 1795 land grant who appeared in the 1800 census of
Montgomery. The estate
papers of 1803 also indicate that Leonard Cagle had moved to Georgia,
evidently sometime between Charles' death in 1801 and the year 1803.
This would be consistent with the known location of Leonard, who was in
Montgomery Co., NC in 1800, but was in Clarke Co,, GA at the time of the
1805 GA Land Lottery. It should be noted, however, Charles himself had a
son named Leonard, believed to have been born abt 1780, who would have
been about 21 yrs old in 1801. The possibility might be kept open that
this young Leonard was the administrator of the Charles Cagle estate,
though it would seem less likely.

By the time of the e1810 Federal Census, Mary Cagle, the widow of

her location for the census of that year, if indeed she was still alive,
is not known.

Of the items you listed below, the 1810 Census of Cabarrus Co., NC and the
1830 census of Montgomery Co. NC are the only references that relate to My
ancestor, Henry Cagle Sr., ca 1760 - 1837. However, the remaining material
should be helpful to others.

If any Cagle family member who knows or can forward this info to Nancy Jean, I'd like to find out some Burrus & Angel family info, if she has it, such as what were her grandparents given names (Burrus & Angel)?
Also, would like to share photos and additional Burrus info with her.
