Yes, as I believe I answered yesterday or the day before, they are both
married to the same John J. Cagle, but they have different parents. Priscilla
Ann Owen married 27 May 1847 to John J. Cagle. Marriage 202 is Priscilla
Owens, widow of John Cagle, and her marriage to John J.'s brother Calvin.
Marriage 207 is the 1855 marriage of Lucinda Owen to John J. Cagle -- I don't
know if there is a record of a divorce from Priscilla, but Priscilla's three
children are born 1850, 1851, and 1853. Lucinda's four are born 1856, 1857,
1858, and 1862.
Mary Lucinda Owen [b. 3 May 1842, Haywood Co.] is the daughter of Peter
Owen [b. 1802, Greenville, SC], son of George and Mary Ann "Polly" Owen.
Priscilla Ann Owen [b. 22 Sep. 1832, Haywood Co.] is the daughter of Hezekiah
Kerock Owen, [b. abt 1800, Greenville, SC], son of George and Mary Ann
"Polly" Owen. They were first cousins, as their fathers were brothers.
Hope this helps. Cheri Caudle

We have a lot of information, all from other sources, which I'm trying to
verify. I can see that I need to write out this information for the Cagle
Digest. <G>
Bill's great-grandmother is Cordelia Roxanne Cagle, born probably Nov. 1853,
Haywood Co., NC, daughter of John J. Cagle [b. 1825, Haywood Co. NC] and
Priscilla Owens. [Cordelia says Nov. 1863 in 1900 census, but other census
returns show dates indicating that would probably be ten years off.]
John J. died in 1863 in the Civil War and his widow married his
brother Calvin Asaph "Anzil" Cagle [11 May 1845, Haywood Co. NC-21 June 1921,
Haywood Co.]
I don't have all the full birth dates in this family, but John J. was
apparently the oldest and Calvin A. next to the youngest of a family of about
twelve children, born to Henry W. Cagle, Sr. [b. 1798, SC] and Catherine C.
"Katie" Holder [1804, SC, parents unknown].
Henry W. is the oldest of three children I have listed for John Cagle &
Lucy, md. 1797. John is shown on one source as b. 1770 and another as 1780
-- I have nothing definitive about Lucy. The other children are 1802 and
1810, so there may be more.
Two weeks ago or so we travelled to Haywood Co. NC to work with
original records if we could find any, and to read census records from what
we had to what we needed to know. We found a gold mine! The federal census
returns for the county have been indexed and published from 1810 to 1920 by a
local citizen who has made this his life work -- retired. His database is a
million and a half names of people who have lived in the county or are
related.
After returning, I found on the internet the interesting personage of
Leonhart Kegel aka Leonard Cagle, b. 1684 in the Palatinate area of Germany.
I agree it is probable that we go back to him, but I'd like more information
on our John & Lucy couple and John's parents.
Karl Wilhelm William Cagle [b. 1722] is listed as the father of John
on one site with a John and Lucy. BUT, another suggested a son David. I
refuse to be involved in the type of "creative genealogy" that is giving
online services a bad name. So I'm looking for a person with a database
founded in rock-solid fact, as far as possible, and with definite tie-ins to
Haywood Co.
Probability is that they came from South Carolina . . . and probably
before that the Alsace-Lorraine area of France and the Palatine area of
Germany. These stories are handed down in Bill's family from his grandmother.
We found parallel ones in the Smathers family heritage in Haywood Co., which
family name has long been associated with family stories from the Cagle side
of the family.
Thanks for your help. It's good to share with others. My maiden name
is Gifford, and I have a considerable amount of information entered on that
line that I share when I can, and I enjoy doing so. I look forward to
hearing more on this Cagle line.
Sincerely,
Cheri Caudle in Tennessee

Don't recognize the Jacob b 1904 but the Joseph Wheeler Cagle, Sr. may well
be the son of James Pinkney and Frances Sharp Cagle of Winston Co. MS. Their
Joseph Wheeler Cagle was born Oct. 10, 1898. He married Mildred Ellis in June
of 1919 and she died in Sept. of the same year. In June of 1921, he married
Elizabeth Whitman.

Kevin,
My husband, Bill, is a direct descendant of John Cagle & probably
Lucy, of Haywood Co., NC. Is this the same couple you're referring to above?
Thanks for answering.

Liz,
I have a couple of suggestions. Since you were only seven when they died someone must have raised you. Assuming they are still around, I would start by asking them what they know. If the pipeline company he worked for is still in business they may have old employee records that can help. Were your mother or father ever in the service, old service records may have some information. Do you know the towns where your father worked and did they belong to a church in the towns where your father worked. The church in those towns may have a record of there marriage. How about the family of your fathers former wife. They may know something.
Good Luck!

Liz & List,
The only idea I have is, the state they divorced from their first
spouse.
Use the dates you supect when you and your half brother were born.
More than likley their marriage record, is held
at that states Department of Vital Statistics.

Try starting with where your brothers were born. Then go to surrounding
counties. Do the same thing with where your grandparents lived, if you know
that. This could be a needle in the haystack but I would try every state-wide
index available. Since your mother had been married before, she may be listed
under either that name or her maiden name (or both). Good luck.

Lee and List,
We seem to have some discrepancy in the genealogy of this man.
You state above that Martin G. Cagle b. 1808,
son of Jacob b. 1770's, grandson of John 1740's, appears in McLennan in
1870 all verified by census records. I for one would like to see the
census records you speak of.
Also why on p. 6 of the May 1997 issue of The
Cagle Journal, does John say this same man
died in Fannin Co; Tx; in the 1850's.
You made no reference to my post at all. You
as anyone else can view this 1860 Fannin Co;
Tx; census image online.
Who are these people who appear there in 1860.
Earl
M.G. Cagle married Susan C. Barkley on
May 24, 1836, in Hardeman Co; Tn.
In my edditions of the Cagle Journal, there is
not much mention of him.
He is said to be b. c. 1808 and died in the 1850's, in Fannin Co; Tx.
S.K. Publications has donated census images
to Rootsweb.
One is the 1860 Fannin Co; Tx; census.
The index to this census is misleading to me
as it misses some people.
The index lists a M.G. Cagle, on p. 252 of the
census. There is no age listed or no sex indicated. After loading the
image of p. 252 I
find it is for a 13 yr. old female.
Then I ask my self why would a 13 yr. old male
or female be listed in the index.
Along with her is a John H. Cagle age 9. Next
in this household is a Willis ? age 28, farm hand.
So I go to the image of the previous page of this 1860 Fannin Co; Tx;
census.
There as head of household is a C. Cagle, age
44 who has real estate valued at $1000 and personal property at $1200.
Living with her is a Robt. L. Cagle age 23, and
what I make out to be Edward Cagle age 19.
I think this is the widow of Martin Cagle, who
John says died in Fannin Co; in the 1850's.
These images aren't easy to read and I was
able to make my determination by printing the
pages in question.
I would be interested in others ideas on this.
By the way it shows her born in Tn; Robert born in Ar; Edward born in
Ar; M. G. born in Tn; and
John H. Cagle born in Tn.
According to John G. Cagle's work, Martin Cagle lived for a time in
Lafayette Co; AR.
Also the initials for the 13 yr. old female M.G.
Cagle, is theirs. I think it could be M.C. Cagle.
Earl
Hello Everyone,
I got a reply back on the 1920 Delta Co; Tx; census lookup.
There were no listings for Cagle in 1900, 1910,
or the 1920 census.
There were Cagle's, living in Fannin, Lamar,
and Red River Co's.
