Hi List,
I want to apologize for my forwarded message a little while ago, I put the
Cagle mailing list down wrong, and the postmaster sent it back to me. I
thought I deleted that part, but from my copy of the e-mail, I guess what I
did, didn't work. I think I've been at the computer too many hours today,
and I've suffered a "Brain Freeze". Please forgive me, and do read the
message that I forwarded on my Taylor family.
Your fellow list member,
Jan Kelley

Hi List,
I saw Earls query a little while ago on the mailing list, and I had just
gotten this information from a cousin on my Taylor line and I thought It
might help those researching both lines, as I am. Sorry for not thinking of
it earlier Earl. I guess I'm still new to this.
Also, I have two Lucinda Smiths in my Smith family information. In one of
them her father is listed as Andrew Jackson Percy Smith, son of Isaac Smith
and Brittania Savage, born on January 1, 1815. His wifes name was Mariah. I
also have him listed on a census as "Black" Andy Smith. Haven't been able to
verify if they're part of my Smith Family who married so many of the Cagles.
Again, I'm sorry for not passing it onto the list first!
Thank you for your patience with me as I learn!

Earl,
This is what I have for Lavisa Wright.
Lee Cagle
Lavisa2 Wright (Lemuel Hogan1) was born 04 April 1822 in Warren County,
Tennessee, and died 20 May 1855 in Warren Co., TN. She married Benjamin
Steward Silas Cagle 23 July 1848 in Warren Co., TN, son of John Cagle and
Mary Carter. He was born 1826 in Warren County, Tennessee, and died 07
April 1891 in Beersheba Springs, Grundy County, Tennessee.
Notes for Benjamin Steward Silas Cagle:
Ben was a member of the Masonic Lodge #478, Chartered November 8, 1875.
Ben chaired the committee selected to draw up the first charter. He was a
senior warden 1865 and WM 1886. The five stations which Ben built were
moved from Altmont and are still used by the Tracy City Masonic Lodge.
The narrative of the Cagle Family was obtained from the Cagle Family
Bible by the wife of Berton Benjamin Cagle, Great Grandson of Ben Cagle.
Ben died at Beersheba and is buried in the Armstron Cemetery, Irvin
College, Tennessee. At the time of his death, his property totaled 6.2
sections. It was known as the Orchard but, also had a Tannery and Lumber
Mill. He willed everything to his three daughters and his widow, Mary,
who died in 1912. Cagle grandchildren refer to her as Granny Shackle.
Local residents recall that two elderly ladies operated a children's gift
shop in the Cagle house on Dahigren Ave about 1916 and 1917. Three or
four years later, A. M. Harris lived there briefly when he came from
Alabama to run the Saw mill. He also, operated a small grocery store in
the building which now houses the museum. It is interesting to note that
Ben originally acquired his property at a court sale. (Clerk and
Magistrate) in 1866 and 54 years later 1902, it was sold at court by the
Cagle heirs in a partition suit. The new owners were W. R. and Maggie
Olley, they had a contract for carrying the mail from Beersheba to
Coalmont. According to a 1923 deed, B. M. Brown and John M Mears
purchased the Mansion House, barn, stable, orchards, etc. John and Ida
Mears operated the Hotel for several years. Thomas and James Northcutt
bought the Cagle property in 1937 and after their deaths, it was
inherited by their niece Fannie Moffitt.

Earl,
I don't know exactly what information you are looking for; however, here
is a Charles who would
have been young enough to have been a soldier in the Civil War, and did
have a son Archibald
who was killed while serving.
Let me know if this is the right one. Also, if you have interesting
information regarding them
I would like to have it for my files.

including it below and I don't have the answer she asked.
In another vein does anyone have the CD by Family Tree Maker, that has
1820-1850 immigration records for the Port of New Orleans? This is part
of Family Tree Makers, new version 9. It I beleive also was avaliable as
a single CD. If so please look for any listings for Cagle, or variations

Earl, I am sending this to you to check out. I am sure (almost) that
these people have been discussed. I wanted you to have it just in case
you have not been to this site.
Is it safe to assume that Archibald and Charles were father and son? If
so, that had to be a terrible thing to fight right along with your son
and know that he died!
I didn't want to send this to the list because of it being an attachment
but you are welcome to send on what you need to to the list.

John Fullbright Cagle is the brother of my Benjamin F b. 1819. Both are
the sons of Leonard
Cagle, b. 1780; d. aft Nov 1850 who married (1) Lydia Fullbright abt 1802
and (2) Nancy
Unknown abt 1841.
Leonard has been variously attached to Charles, John and most recently
Jacob, b. 1755. In
a personal letter, John G. seems to lean toward Jacob, b. 1755.
Incidently, John G is a
direct descendant of Leonard, as well, through his Benjamin F Jr, b. Nov
1850 who is the
brother of my Augustus, b. 13 Apr 1852; both are the sons of Benjamin F.,
b. 1819.
I am sure you have the linage back from Jacob, b. 1755.

To continue with the Cagle's, of the 1850 Tn; census next is Benjamin S.
Cagle. He is listed as being b.abt. 1826. His wife is shown to be Lavisa
Cagle, at 28 yrs. b, abt. 1822. They are enumerated in Warren Co; Tn; at
539-80. In the Early Middle Tennessee Marriages there is a Benjamin
Cagle to Lucinda Smith, marriage on 12-31-1860 in Warren Co; Tn. My
question is was this a later marriage for him? Is he a son of John
D.Cagle age 50, also of Warren Co; Tn. ?
The records listed below are mostly what is avaliable, for Cagle.
So we need Lavisa Cagle's age 28, maiden name. Is there a marriage
record for her and Benjamin Cagle?
Using the 1830 Warren Co; Tn; cenus below it seems the second John Cagle
listed, would be the John D. Cagle b. abt. 1800. He is shown in the over
20 and under 30 age bracket.
He has a son in the under age 5 bracket, also his wife is listed in the
over 15 and under 20 age bracket.

Cagle, John
Cagle, John
Cagle, Henry
As seasoned researchers know, the 1850 census was very important. We now
had names of wives, children, ages, places of birth, etc. A very
important census that one could get some valuable leads. I have decided
to use the 1850 Tennessee census for Cagle, and see how much we know. As
good as place as any is alphabetical. Allen Cagle, according to this
census was born abt.1813-1814. His wife Sarah Cagle (unknown maiden name
and marriage date is needed), was b. abt 1824-1825. This census shows
both were born in Tennessee. Richard Cagle, was b. abt. 1845, his sister
Jane Cagle, b. abt. 1846.
They were enumerated in Seiver Co; Tn; and the enumeration numbers
838-891. Now also in Sevier Co; Tn; at 839-891 is Sarah Cagle age 60,
born abt. 1790 in NC. Rebecah Cagle, is age 16, Malinda Cagle age 15,
are enumerated with their mother. I do not have full census records but
would say Sarah Cagle, was a widow. Her most likley husband may be a
William Cagle, who died abt. 1840.
I have seen a William Cagle, and what is thought to be his wife Sarah
Brewer. Do we have a marriage or bible record for this marriage?
Next are they the parents of Allen Cagle, and others?
Let us examine the 1840 Sevier Census. We have more than one William
Cagle, listed.
1840 Sevier County Tennessee Census
William Cagle b. abt. 1810-1820, William Cagle b. abt. 1810-1820,
William Cagle Jr; b. abt.
1780 -1790, William Cagle Sr; b. abt. 1750 - 1760. Is William Cagle Jr;
the best canidate as Allen Cagle's, father ? If so why is Allen Cagle,
not enumerated with him at abt. 15 yrs. old?
The female Cagle, in his bracket seems to match with Sarah Cagle's,
reported age of 60 in 1850. In the 1840 census is also a female age abt.
1-5, two females at. abt. 5-10, and two females 10-15.
Are two of these females Rebecah & Malinda Cagle, as listed with their
mother in 1850? This seems to be very likley in my point of view. An
excelent question is where was Allen Cagle, in 1840? Working on a
relatives farm near by and enumerated there?

Have you been able to determine who married Artie E Moody, Davis, Cagle.
Where was the

I found an Evan Harvey Cagle from Haywood County who had a son Jesse
Columbus Cagle.
Evan had moved to Jackson County by the time Jesse Columbus Cagle was
born on 17 Nov 1878.

Her name according to the 1880 through 1910 cenuses is Artie. (1880-
Moody, Artie E., age 11 months; 1900- Davis, Artie, married; 1910- Davis,
Artie, widowed). I have not been able to find her or her CAGLE husband
and CAGLE children in 1920. (In 1910 Artie was Artie DAVIS, widowed and
only had her youngest DAVIS daughter, Oberia, living with her). So Artie
married ? CAGLE sometime after 1910. According to another researcher, her
second husband was Jesse Cagle. But he had Artie's DAVIS husband's first
name wrong, so I'm not too sure it was Jesse Cagle. She seemed to like

Larry,
I believe the simplest way to find the connection to the larger Cagle
branch is to write to
Austin for a copy of the death certificate. This would give the name of
his father and mother,
then we can go from there.
Also, you should be able to locate the funeral home in Gainesville, Texas
who handled the
funeral arrangements. Both, Clinton Leonard and Vinnie Myrtle Hogue
Cagle died recently, i.e.,
1952 and 1969. The funeral home would have this information as well for
them both.
Sorry, I couldn't help more.

Lee,
Here is a little more information on my search of my Grandfather,
Clinton Leonard Cagle. He was born on 30 Aug. 1875.......birthplace
unknown. He died on 11 Apr. 1952 in Gainesville, Tx., where he is buried
(I believe it is called the Fairview Cemetary). He married Vinnie Myrtle
Hogue.........date of marriage unknown. She (Vinnie) was born on 31 Aug.
1885, in "Indian Territory, Okla.", and died on 30 July 1969 in
Gainesville, Texas, where she is buried in a family plot next to her
husband, Clinton Leonard.
I am sorry, I don't have any info. on Clinton Leonard's siblings,
and the only one I am aware of for Vinnie Myrtle is a half brother,
Virgil Lawson.......whom was born to Vinnie Myrtle's mother by another
marriage. The children of Clinton Leonard and Vinnie Myrtle were:
Vinnie Lou Cagle Spencer, Edna May Cagle Embry Chism, Earl Cagle, Ada
Cagle, Loretta Cagle Price Flowers, George Cagle, William Lee Cagle,
Lillie Augusta Cagle Eaton, and my late Mother, Betty Joyce Cagle Embry.
I find it very interesting that a lot of the boy's first names appear so
often in the early Cagle lineage.
An interesting (and almost confusing) twist here, is that my Dad
Henry D. Embry and his Father, William Columbus Embry both married
sisters (over 20 years apart in age and wedding dates). My Grandfather
married Edna May Cagle, and my Dad married Betty Joyce Cagle (they were
both the youngest in their respective families). My Mom and Dad were
also each born in the very same house in Spanish Fort, Texas almost 10
years apart. The Cagle family moved in as the Embry family was moving
out.
My Father is Henry D. Embry, born on 8 Feb. 1920 in Spanish Fort, as
I mentioned. He was the last born of the marriage between William
Columbus Embry and Dora Randall Embry Holder. After their divorce, my
Grandfather remarried to Edna May Cagle, and my Grandmother remarried to
a Mr. Holder having one child by that marriage (Bondell "Tutor" ).
Henry D. Embry and Betty Joyce Cagle (born 19 Dec. 1929, died 20
Feb. 1993), were married on 23 March 1951 in Ringland, Oklahoma. They
had one child, myself (Larry Ray Embry).
I wish I had more info. on the parents and siblings of Vinnie Myrtle
and Clinton Leonard for you, but obviously that is part of what I am
searching for now. Once again, I really appreciate your time and
attention here, and I hope it proves fruitful for your database as well.
I also have a photo of Vinnie and Clinton taken around the '40's, and
will be glad to send it once I have a scanner to do it. If there is
anything I have left out here that I can round up for you, please let me
know.
Hope you and your family are having a wonderful Holidays and enjoy a
great 2002!
Maybe a Cousin,
Larry Embry

Subject: Clinton Leonard Cagle Inquiry
Did you have any luck searching the lineage of Clinton Leonard Cagle?
Maybe I can help you
but, I will need additional information. Do you know who Clinton's
brothers and sisters might be?
Where was he born? What is your father's name and where was he born?
Whom did he marry
and when and where. The more information you have on Clinton the easier
it is to place him
in the correct branch.
How about Vinnie Myrtle Hogue, where was she born, and where did she die.
Where was she
married. Who were her parents?
Incidentally, I have over 26,000 Cagles and allied families in my index.
Also, Hogue is one of my wifes Ancestorial names on her mother's side.
So, I have more than a passing interest in helping you.

I am searching for the lineage of my grandparents. Clinton Leonard Cagle
(b. 30 Aug. 1875, d. 11Apr. 1952), married to Vinnie Myrtle Hogue (b. 31
Aug. 1885, d. 30 Jul. 1969). This family has been hard to trace, so if
anyone has any information on this line, I would appreciate hearing from
you. I thank you in advance for your time and help.
David Cagle, was one of the first to join our Cagle list. He is a great
help with several lines of Tennessee Cagle's. If you need help with the
branch from Tennessee, he is a great help. In part David writes :

The above children were sons & daughters of Thomas Cagle Sr. Another
connection of mine is with his daughter, Susannah Jane Cagle. I have in
the past reported that she was born on my birthday February 21, 1849.
She was born 98 years to the day before me. She is my g-grandmother on
my Gunter line. She married John T. Gunter on December 14, 1873 in
Hickman Co; Tn. She died on December 08, 1913, and is burried in Perry
Co; Tn. One of their children was Mary Elizabeth Gunter, who
Married Marquis DeLafayette Cagle Sr. He was a son of Thomas William
Cagle, who was a son of Charles Jacob Cagle, who was the brother of
Thomas Cagle Sr. Mary & Mark D. Cagle Sr.
( He and my father used this shortened version of their name) were of
course my grandparents.
Keep up the great work David!!!
