New member of mailing list
My name is Janet Calhoun and I live in the Huntsville, AL area and I am
new to the Cagle mailing list.
My lineage from Leonhart Kegle (1684-1754) is through David Cagle
(1728-1780), Henry Cagle (1793-1843), John Cagle (1813-1879) and
Elizabeth Jane Cagle (1842-1907).
Elizabeth Jane Cagle m. Asa Hill 1860. I have their children and lots of
information about the Hill family.
I also had an aunt (sister to my grandfather) who married William Henry
Cagle (1882-1954). His lineage from Leonhart Kegle (1684-1754) was
through John Cagle (1710-1799), Leonard Cagle (1742-?), Charles Cagle
(1780-1842), Littleton Cagle (1810-1889), and Leonard Cagle (1854-1889)
.
I have very little about William Henry "Will" Cagle, but I have quite a
lot about his wife's Jones family. She was Cora Leona Jones Cagle
(1887-1962). My mother has several very good pictures of the William
Henry Cagle family and one of Elizabeth Jane Hill Cagle and her husband
Asa Hill. That picture also contains one of Elizabeth's sisters, which
one is not known.
Would appreciate any corrections, additions, family stories and/or
pictures anyone has and will take the time to share.
Many thanks!
Janet Calhoun

My biggest hurdle is that I only have last names to go by, and those
surnames are Cagle and Brown. This is the information that I have and
though it isn't much, maybe someone out there can help. The Brown family
member is a lady, I don't know her first name or his. This lady Brown,
is the daughter of another lady by the name of Byrd/Bird. Lady Brown, is
the sister to my Ludicea "Grey Squirrel" Taylor she also used the name
of Dicey, and she we believe, was born in 1825, and they all came from
Warren County, Tennessee and I know that Ludicea moved to Arkansas with
her husband and my great great grandfather Jacob Carroll Smith, but I
don't know if they followed or stayed in Tennessee.
Now that I've shared my confusion with you, I will close, in hopes of
hearing from you and thanks for your help.

Jan & List,
The only clue I have for you is the 1830 census
of Warren Co; Tn.
There was one listing for Byrd, and the Cagle's.
I seem to recall that there were even earlier connectons between these
families.
They probally knew each other when they settled in North Carolina.
This may be a connection to your family.

Hi,
My name is Jan Kelley, and I've probably been in touch with some of you on the internet looking for information on my Cagle lines, and asking you the same questions that I will put out to the Cagle mailing lists family.
I have a dilemma, and I don't have much information to straighten it out, so, if any of you out there can help me, I would greatly appreciate it.
My biggest hurdle is that I only have last names to go by, and those surnames are Cagle and Brown. This is the information that I have and though it isn't much, maybe someone out there can help. Hello all,
Hope everyone has had a nice summer. Here
in NE Missouri, it has been in the mid-ninties.
Of course plenty of steamy humidity on top of
the heat.
Wanted to let everyone know about some data
donated to rootsweb. This is the Url for the page and it may help some
of you.
http://userdb.rootsweb.com/contributors.html
There has been some interesting data about
Leonard C. Cagle & Mary Osborne Cagle.
Sometimes finding a certain document, will
answer questions as to relationships.
Not everyone left a will, so we have to look for
estate, land records etc.
The Cagle List, will soon be on the internet two
years. In that time great strides have been made in our research.

Jackie, Mollie and Anyone Interested:
The children listed in the estate of Leonard C. Cagle are the same as on my
records except that I had Nancy and Ruth married to the wrong people. This is
how they are listed as heirs:
James Henry Cagle (administrator)
Joshua Orr and wife Jane
Benjamin Merrill and wife Louisa
Nancy Cox
Noah Rabb and wife Ruth
Charles H. Cagle
Jacob Cagle
Caleb Orr and wife Anna
This accounts for all his children except Margaret who died as a child.
Further information on these children:
Nancy Cagle m John Cox
Margaret Cagle (1822-1930)
Charles Hughey Cagle m Margaret Elvira Richardson
Anna Myra Cagle m Caleb Orr
Ruth Elvira Cagle m Noah Rabb
Jane Cagle m Joshua Orr
Jacob Cagle m Alice Sloan
Rebecca Louisa Cagle m 1) Otis Fleener and 2) Benjamin Merrill
James Henry Cagle m Rachel Elizabeth Young
Except for Eddie Cox, a member of this list, I would never have known that
Nancy Cagle who married John Summey in Henderson Co. NC was not the daughter
of Leonard and Mary Osborne Cagle. After all, her own grandchildren thought
she was. Eddie's persistence in trying to connect his ancestor, Nancy Cagle
Cox, to this family finally got my attention and I was determined to learn
the facts. Thanks, Eddie - now off to find who in the heck Noah Rabb was.

I just made a terrific mistake on the previous post concerning the estate of
Leonard C. Cagle of Translvania. Please disregard #2 about Margaret Cagle and
replace with:
2) Daughter RUTH CAGLE (not Margaret) married Noah Rabb. They are listed
several times in her father's estate settlement as non-residents of NC. This
means that the Ruth Cagle buried in Old Davidson River Presybterian Cemetery
in Brevard, NC is not the daughter of Leonard and Mary Osborne Cagle and
their daughter was still living as late as 1890.
Sorry, sorry, sorry. Don't know where my head was.
Dana Meara
I recently obtained, from the NC State Archives, the estate papers of
Leonard C. Cagle who died in Transylvania Co. NC 8 August 1866 without a
will. Estate file covers 1867-1890 and mostly involves land transactions -
apparently Leonard conducted business almost until the day he died.
Information given in these papers provides documentation to correct the
records of many Cagle researchers (including me) for the family of Leonard
and Mary Osborne Cagle:
1) Daughter Nancy Cagle married John Cox and lived in Greenville SC. The
Nancy Cagle who married John Summey of Henderson/Transylvania Counties of NC
was not the daughter of Leonard and Mary Cagle Osborne.
2) Daughter Margaret Cagle married Noah Rabb. They did not live in State of
NC but the papers do not say where they did live. This means that the
Margaret Cagle (22 Nov 1822 - 3 Oct 1830) who is buried with Leonard and Mary
Osborne Cagle in the Old Davidson River Presbyterian Cemetery in Brevard, NC
is not their daughter Margaret. She is surely a relative but I do not know
where she fits into the family.
Hope this information helps someone. Be glad to answer questions.
Dana Meara
John,
I believe this Henry Cagle, Sr. you mention to be the brother of David(2)
rather than a son. There is another Henry Cagle, Sr., b. ca 1760 d. ca
1837, that appears in the 1790 census of Mecklenburg Co., NC that is
thought to be the son of David(2). This younger Henry Cagle, Sr. appears in
the 1800 and 1810 census of Cabarrus Co., NC, the 1830 census of Montgomery
Co., NC and in the 1833 Tax List of Hardin Co., TN. He had 200 acres
surveyed in Hardin Co., on 03 July 1837. To my knowledge, this is the last
record referring to Henry Cagle Sr., 1760-1837.

The Wayne County Historical Society, Wayne County, Tennessee, is entering
into a project of collecting as many Bible records as we can to be published
and available for purchase.
Any family who has lived in Wayne County, Tennessee, or who presently lives
in Wayne County, Tennessee is encouraged to share their Family Bible Records
with the Historical Society. This can be done by taking the Bible to any
office of the Peoples Bank, Wayne County Bank, or Bank of Waynesboro to have
copies made at no charge. You may also take them to the Office of the County
Historian in the Courthouse or most churches to have copies made of the
Brith, Death, Marriage and Publisher's pages of the Bible. We especially
need the "Publisher's Page" or the "Title Page", showing the name of the
publisher and/or the date of publication. If the Title or Publisher's page
is missing, a copy of the New Testament page will usually work.
Copies may be mailed to the Wayne County Historical Society, P.O. Box 866,
Waynesboro, TN 38485-0866, may be brought to the office of the County
Historian in the Courthouse, or emailed to Mrs. Betty Anderson at
<andcoy(a)netease.net>; Bob Rains at <rainsb(a)netease.net>. If emailed, please
review the format for transcription by checking those records which are
on-line at http://www.netease.net/wayne/originalbible.htm, or you may submit
a scanned copy of the record.
As you know old Bible may get lost as the years go on -- or even burned --
with no copies available for our children and grandchildren. Many times
these Bible records are the only verification of family records. You
participation will help us preserve the history of Wayne County (Tennessee)
families for years to come.
By submitting your Bible Records, you are giving permission for those
records to be publsihed in the Wayne County Bible Records Book.

IF this is the family listed below, then the marriage may have occurred
after 2 Dec 1850 [date census was taken] because neither Rafe nor Frances
are marked as being married within the year. And, it doesn't appear to have
taken place in Lauderdale County. None of this family is listed in Warren's
1870 Census, and I did not find a marriage for Frances SHELTON between
1862-1870 here in Lauderdale.
Although listed as a boatman in 1850 [probably on the TN River], the 1860
occupation of 'hireling' indicates to me that he was a 'general laborer'.
With a child named David Jefferson [could be for Jefferson Davis???] I'd
look for service in the Civil War. Ralph Shelton is definitely of age to be
cannon fodder.
Hope this helps.
