Sarah married Christopher DENMAN in 1827 in Franklin Co., GA.
I am trying to find out more about her.
Who were her parents?
What happened to her after her husband died.

Dear List,
Doyle, I am on the list. If I don't get the mail it is because my mother has
printed it or deleted it. She is the one who checks the mailbox. I have
inherited this big dog over in Dallas. He lives at my grandfather's house and
I am not home alot. We promised to take care of the dog.
Lee, you may not have known that the John in your database who was killed in
a boiler accident on a steamboat was a licensed Steamboat Pilot on his own
boat. I would like to know the origin of your information, and everthing else
you know about him and his family.
This is the story:
Charles Cagle ran away from Tennessee when he was 12 years old. He and his
older brother, John, became Steamboat Pilots. My grandfather's eyes sparkled
when he talked about his grandfather, the Steamboat Pilot. He would say,
"Ohhh, they Loved steamboatin'."
We asked him, If they loved steamboatin', why did they quit?
A cloud fell over his countenence. "Charles Cagle quit steamboatin' because a
bad accident killed his brother, John." They were very close. Charles had
stayed on shore that night. The reason is not known. When Charles went to the
dock the next morning, there was no boat. There was no John. "There were no
remains of John or the boat." Not an ash or cinder floating on the water.
There is probably no gravesite or death certificate. Only stories.
John may have been married with children. Unknown.
Charles left the river. He may have gone to Arkansas first to hunt and fish
in Lawrence County. He inlisted in the war in 1861 at Camp Barton in Dallas,
TX. Later, he became the first Caretaker of Bachman's Dam, which was the
water supply for all of Dallas. He had a house, a barn, and a summer house
there by the dam. He and his wife, Victoria Regina Ellette of Virginia, had 8
children. Most of them died as children and are buried at the Greenwood
Cemetery in Dallas. The oldest of these children was George Wellington Cagle.
There is a second George Cagle buried in a separate plot. His second oldest
son was named John. Charles died in 1908.
Two of his boys, Charles Ellette C. and Harry C. had children.
Harry and his family lived in Rowlett in eastern Dallas County. I don't know
where they are now. Grandpa would talk about his favorite cousin, J.B. Cagle.
That stands for James Bowen, who also had a sister,Virginia, and several
others.
Charles Ellette Cagle, b. 1877 in Dallas, married Mattie Aaron. She was 16
when my grandfather was born. They named him Charles Aaron Cagle, b.1909. He
married Lucille Marie Waguespack of LaFourch County, Louisiana and they had
two boys: Charles Joseph and William Aaron. We are not Cagles, we are all
Orrs, because my grandfather had a legal name change, but that is long story.
Charles Joseph (Chuck) Orr b.1929, now deceased, had 4 children. They are my
first cousins, Larry, Carol, David, and Terri Lee. They all have children.
David has a grandchild.
William Aaron Orr, b. 1830, was my father. He died March 13, 2000. There are
5 of us: Ellen, (me) Karen b. 1953, Cathy, Billy, and Charlie. Charlie is a
Professional Flat Track Motorcycle Racer and travels all over the country.
Biily is a highly demanded motorcyle mechanic. Daddy had 2 granddaughters.
Papa (my grandfather) had a sister, Margaret. Her only son, Emile, had 8
children. They are my second cousins and most of them live near Bastrop, TX.
I mourn the deaths of my father and grandfather, but there is nothing I would
rather do than talk about them. Feel free to ask questions. It may take a day
or so for me to recieve your messages and respond.
Your cousin in Texas,
Karen Orr
Hi group,
Lee and David,
I forwarded the information you both sent me on to Karen, her reply is below.
It appears you have connected her lines and she thanks you.
Don't know if she is in our mail list, but I'll check in the reply to her.
Thanks cousins,
Doyle

Barbara,
Thanks for your posts. There was a very large Cagle family in Winston Co.
AL . I believe this John and Charles are probably members of this family
and probably not from Hardin Co., TN.

Doyle,
Following is a post I made yesterday re the subject: John the Traveler.
Turned out the Traveler was not John but William Cagle. I think I may have
corresponded with Karen on this current subject before--her relative being
Charles, b. ca 1830. In any case, I would like to know what happened to
John and Charles Cagle of Hardin Co. TN who disappeared in 1842. Hardin
County straddles the Tennessee, and in the summer time was the southern end
of the steamboat trade.
This line runs: Leonard (1); David (2); Henry Sr. (3); George (4); then John
(5) and Charles (5).
(Yesterday's Post)
Jeff,
I have a lost John Cagle, b. 1827 in Hardin Co. TN, disappeared 1842.
In 1838 George Cagle and family moved from Hardin Co., TN to New Madrid Co.,
MO. George was killed by a falling tree in New Madrid Co., in 1840. His
wife, Elizabeth, moved the family back to Hardin Co., TN the same year. In
1841 Elizabeth's two boys, John and Charles were bound out to Edward
Dinkins and Thomas Gray, respectively, to learn a trade. John was born in
1827 in Hardin Co., TN, Charles was born ca 1828-29. In 1842, they ran
away to parts unknown.

Thanks John,
You said it much better than I.
Another question. I have seen today a birth date of 1726 for John
"Dutchman" Cagle. Where does this come from. If it is so, why would his
baptismal record not be included with his brother and sister in the German
Church Records?

Hi Cousins,
Can anyone help this lady? She left this query in one of my guestbooks,
and I don't have this one in my database.
" I'm looking for John Cagle born in TN in 1827-8 who was killed in a
boiler explosion on a steamboat, maybe on the Miss. Grandpa seemed to think

I am still trying to figure out what happen to my Cagle ancestor. John
B.Cagle, son of Jacob Jr. born abt. 1850 Cherokee Co. GA married Maltha Payne
(no information on her at all) moved to Mclennon TX 1900 according to the
1900 census. Would love some info on this family and especially Maltha, My
great-great aunt says her name was Amaltha but I have never found anything to
support that. Thanks Sandee

Fouts/Pfautz Families
In North Carolina
Excerpts from John Scott Davenport, Ph.D., Earliest Pfautz/Fouts Families in
America, National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol 63, No 4, December, 1975:
Theobald (Dewald/David) Pfautz, age sixteen or under, arrived in Philadelphia on
the ship Davy in October 1738. He appears on the ship's list as "Theevia
Fautzen." Fautzen is the German feminine form of the surname Fautz. Fautz =
Pfautz. Strassburger and Hinke, Pennsylvania German Pioneers (Norristown
Pennsylvania German Society, 1934), 3 Vols, 2255, list "Theevia" as a "doubtful"
name. The ship's list certified that there were 94 men, 47 women - a total of
141 on board. Theevia Fautzen must be included with the list of men in order to
make the total 94. No others on the list of men have "-en" on their surnames.
Hence, the name was that of a male named Fautz, or in German Pfautz. "Theevia
being aural English spelling of a German-pronounced German name can be
transliterated phonetically into "Thebchd," which is recognizable as Theobald.
Strassburger and Hinke, 1233, List 61A only. The ship's list included all males
by name regardless of age and totaled 94 men. Only 40 men, those over age 16,
signed the Oath of Allegiance (list 61B) and the Oath of Abjuration (list 61C).
Per later data, Theobald Pfautz was a Lutheran when he arrived; hence would not
conscientiously scruple the taking of the oaths if he were of age. Inasmuch as
he married in 1743, his age then was most likely 21, for he also obtained a
Maryland head right in the same year.
His name was Theobald. However, he used Dewald, the German diminutive of that
name. The German pronunciation of Dewald to an English ear resulted in Diobult,
Devalt, Davaselt, Devault, and David appearing in various records. He appears as
Theobald twice in Maryland records. In North Carolina he appeared either as
Devaselt or David. In Randolph County NC Deed Book 5:66, two of his younger sons
described him as "Old David Fouts." However, all records translated from German
in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and North Carolina are consistent in identifying him
as DeWald. Hence the reader will not here be subjected to the agony of the
fluctuating given name suffered in research. Theobald Pfautz is DeWald: Pfautz
in Pennsylvania, Fouts in Maryland and North Carolina, regardless of the name
variation in English-language records.
Once the given name problem was resolved, DeWald Fouts was readily traceable as
My mistake. I was given bad info. JOHN the traveler was actually WILLIAM HENRY the traveler. Let me correct my line. It is as follows:
Myself
DAN Cagle b. 1948 Father
HAROLD Cagle b. 1920 Grandfather
BUELL Cagle b. ?????? Gr. Grandfather
WILLIAM HENRY ?????? Gr. Gr. Grandfather
WILLIAM HENRY was the traveler. he came across the Miss. river and never spoke of his past. He died of old age on a date which is still to be determined.
JOHN was the brother of BUELL. I am still collecting info. from my grandmother and HAROLD's sister. If anyone has info on WILLIAM HENRY, please let me know.

Notes:
One strange aspect of these records is Harmon's age, which is shown as 20-30
in 1840, 30 in 1850, 48 in 1860, 45 in 1870 and 62 in 1880. as in shown in
the article on Harmon's parents, William and Sarah Bruer Cagle, it is highly
probable that Harmon was born circa 1820. Hen died in teh 1890s, probably
1893 judging from the records fiven below It is likewise difficult to
pinpoint the year of birth of Nancy since she is shown successively as being
as being 20-30, 33, 46, ? and 66. On balance it would seem she was born in
1814 and probably several years older than Harmon.
The 1850 census shows , from the States of birth of Mary and Patsy, that
Harmon moved his family from Moore County, NC to Georgia between 1842 and
1845. Note also that Harmon was illiterate and reiterated in the 1880.
The young female, Narcissa, in the 1860 census was obviously the same person
as Nancy Jane . the 1870 cenus is confulsing since so much of the record for
Harmon is inconsistent with other evidence: Harmon's age and state of birth,
the children's middle initials; and the name and state of his wife's birth.
Another inconsistency APC reported that Harmon's estate suffered
considerable damage during the Civil War. where as comparison of the 1860
and 1870 census records show his worth increasing from $800 in 1860 to $1300
in 1870. It is posible that this was a different Harmon or was just very
inaccurate reporting,
APC's 1906 biography stated that after Nancy's death in 1886, Harmon married
Elizabeth Hall and had three more children . The woman Lizabeth Cagle, who
appears with three children in the 1900 census was Harmon's second wife and
widow. Elizabeth Hall was seven years younger than Harmon's last child by
Nancy. the 53 year spread between the birth of Harmon's first child.
Anderson Penn, and his last Harmon Jr. is remakable.
In June, 1971, Cala Carrmack Park and her husband Wilbur Park's copied
records in Gainsville, Ga. pertaining to Harmon Cagle . (Mrs. Park is the
daughter of Jennie Elena Cagle Carmmack, granddaughter of Tyler Z. Cagle ,
and great-granddaughter of Anderson Penn Cagle .) Her information is as
follows:
Harmon Cagle Married Elizabeth Hall , in Hall County, GA on May 30 1886 ,
marriage book C. page 305.
this confirms that Nancy died between late 1880 and early 1886.
On November 12, 1892, Harman Cagle was grantor to Elizabeth Cagle "In
considertaion of $1 in hand and more especially for and in consideration of
the natural love and affection the said Harmon Calge has for his wife said
Elizabeth Cagle ... hereby gives all that tract of land on waters of Mulberry
River.... 100 acres more of less. Signed Harmon Cagle " Book Y, page 391
This Transfer of property from Harmon to Elizabeth would seem to mean he was
in poor health and was seeking to secure the position of his second wife. As
is shown by the next record, he was dead by Oct. 28, 1895. John G. Cagle
would guess he died by very late 1892 or in 1893.
On October 28, 1895 Elizabeth Cagle sold to J.A.S. stephens ten acres for $25
in the Flowery Branch
District. Signed by her mark. The deed was recorded on October 28, 1899 (?)
in Deed Book, P (2).
Note that Elizabeth could not sign her name.
On April 3, 1897, Elizabeth Cagle mortgagged 20 acres of the "Harmon Cagle
place" to Martha J. Hemphill . Book L, Page 563.
In 1897 Elizabeth sold 16 acres of $25 to J.B. Woods. Recorded March 9, 1897.
On December 1, 1900 , Elizabeth sold 24 acres to J.A.S Stephens.
In 1904 she sold to W.D. Hawkins 70 acres for $100 on waters of Mulberry
River. Deed Book 10. Page 235.
These records seem to indicate that Elizabeth had to sell her property to
support herself and her children after Harmon's death. The fact that more
than the original 100 acres were sold may mean she had other assets beyond
those given to her by Harmon.
On last sepeculation on Harmon Cagel regards the source of his first name.
Althoug there were Harmon families in Moore County, NC., when he was born, it
is quite likely that he was names after his morther Sarah Bruer's brother,
Harmon Brewer (Bruer), who appeared as head of a household in the 1810 census
of Moore County, NC.

Descendants of Johannes "John Dutchman" Cagle
Generation No. 1
1. Johannes "John Dutchman"2 Cagle ((Leonhart Kegell ) Leonard1) was
born 1724 in Obermehlingen , Germany, and died May 12, 1799 in Moore County,
North Carolina. He married (1) Johnetta Hart Abt. 1752 in Oley, Berks
County, Pennsylvania. She died Abt. 1768. He married (2) Catherine "Caty"
Abt. 1774 in North Carolina.
Notes for Johannes "John Dutchman" Cagle:
Ancient Pennsylvania Landmarks Known to Leonhart Kegel, 1732-54
Oley Township, Berks County, PA
Oley Township, a few miles east of Reading, in Berks co., PA, is the only
township in America which has been added to the National Register of
Historic Places, as an entire Township. Its settlement dates back as far as
1699, and it ancient German and French Huguenot homesteads have building
standing dated from 1706. It was already a generation old, and a thriving
settlement, when the Cagles arrived from Germany in 1730s; and was nearly a
half-century old when John "Dutchman" Cagle lived in Oley in the early 1750s.
Leonhart Kegel, the 1732 immigrant, and believed to be father of John
"Dutchman" Cagle, acquired land in Oley Township in 1737; at that time,
however, old Oley Township encompassed more territory than does the present
Oley Twp., and section in which Leonhart lived was later made into Alsace
Township.
The economy of Oley Township was based, originally, on farming in the broad
Oley Valley, and on iron-working in the scenic hills which ring the valley.
Of the iron furnaces and forges in Oley, perhaps the most famous was that of
Iarger Family (later Anglicized to "Hunter"), headed by Nicholas Hunter. In
an obscure court case, dating for 1753, Berks Co. records sho that Nicholas
Hunter, on one occasion, filed suite against a John Kegle, believed to be
John "Dutchman" Cagle, who later moved to North Carolina in 1754-55. Oldest
homestead in Oley is that of Johannes Keim, built 1706; he was the ancestor
of the Kime family of Guilford Co., NC. Oley Township furnished a number of
families to central North Carolina during the 1740s adn 1750s including the
Keim, Cagle, and Stutts Families.
(The Nicholas Hunter homestead in Oley Twp., neat the ruins of the famed Oley
Forge. The Oley Lutheran Church stands nearby, but its early recors are lost.
One of the most memorable sights in the city of Reading, Berks Co., PA, is
Alsace Hill in the northern part of town, capped by the twin towers of the
Alsace Lutheran and Alsace German Reformed Churches. The two churches,
identical in construction, stand on either side of a common parking lot, and
share a common graveyard. From date of founding in 1732, until construction
of the present buildings in 1907, the two congrrefations worshipped in a
single building, at alternatin times, under a "Union Church" arrangement.
The Alsace churches stand on the homestead of Dewalt Baum, closest neighbor
of Leonhart Cagle, during Leonard's period of residence, 1737-1748, in Alsace
Township. The Cagles may will have been members of the Alsace Lutheran
Church, but this cannot be verified, as early records of the Church have been
lost.
There is a replica of the original Alsace Church building, which served the
congragtion form ca1737-1753 replaced by a stone church in 1753. The log
church was in use during the period of Leonard Cagle's residence in the
township, and stood about a quarter-mile from his home. The present Alsace
Lutheran Church, in use since 1907. and identical building, standing
adjacent, is the German Ref. church.
Here is a paragraph from the published history of the Alsace Church describes
the expansion of the Church in the era of 1748-1754. In 1748, the year of
the founding of Reading, PA, Leonard Cagle, vacted his homstead in Alsace and
move a few miles distant to Brecknock Township, in Berks Co.

Jeff,
I have a lost John Cagle, b. 1827 in Hardin Co. TN, disappeared 1842.
In 1838 George Cagle and family moved from Hardin Co., TN to New Madrid Co.,
MO. George was killed by a falling tree in New Madrid Co., in 1840. His
wife,Elizabeth, moved the family back to Hardin Co., TN the same year. In
1841 Elizabeth's two boys, John and Charles were bound out to Edward
Dinkins and Thomas Gray, respectively, to learn a trade. John was born in
1827 in Hardin Co., TN, Charles was born ca 1828-29. In 1842, they ran
away to parts unknown.

Thanks Tom,
The only dates I had seen for the birth of David were both provided by John
G. Cagle. Originally he said the 1710's, then found the church record which
gave 29 April 1728. I know there has been some confusion between David and
John "Dutchman" because of the name Johan Theobald Kegel.
I, like most, thought Johan Theobald was John "Dutchman". John G. Cagle
says otherwise and that David, Theobald and Dewalt are the same person. At
this minute, I can't find that information regarding Dewalt in the "Cagle
Journal". Can someone refresh my memory?
I have never seen a Jacob and William listed as sons of Leonard. This is
news to me. I would like to see that information. There were several other
Cagles that came from Germany to Philadelphia. Martin in 1751, Henry in
1754, and Henry in 1765. I am sure there were others. I don't know if this
could have any connection with Jacob or Willaim? I believe the 1790 census
for PA shows a couple of Cagles?

Theobald to Dewalt and then to David. His birthdates are shown as 1710 -
1718, 1710 - 1728, 1726 and 1728. Some posts start to show him as Johann
Dewalt "David" and make a distinction between him and Johann Theobald.
Other posts show him as Johann Theobald Dewalt. Some just call him David.
>
> There also seems to be some confusion on what children belong to these
individuals. I just mention it, because I didn't get into it in length
>
> So as not to confuse myself more at this point, my question is were there
two sons named Johann Theobald? Another question does the baptismal record
on Johann Theobald b. 1728 make any reference to him being Dewalt or is that
just based on what some posts say is the translation of Theobald?
>
> As for David's question about Jacob and William being sons of Leonhart.
My understanding is that, in addition to the others, Leonhart had a son
Jacob b. abt 1734 in Philadelphia and a William b. abt 1722 in Germany.
Leonhart's son Henry also had a son William and Leonhart's son David had a
Jacob b. 1755.

I have quite a bit on Charles and Susannah , some info mine some from family
members, and some from John G. Cagle . lots of info on Henry E. and Martha
and my Charles and Lydia Standridge, (1st wife and lots on 2nd wife , I think
I just got a photo of Charles second wife Mary Elizabeth Tilley Standridge
Cagle, My aunt gave me a tin yesterday and told me this is Charles wife
Lydia, I have one of Lydia so this tin has to be Mary Cagle,

Notes : David Cagle, and his presumed brother John "Dutchman" Cagle,
Acquired land near the same time in early 1764, David's by land entry
(April 21, ) and John's purchase from James Cheney (Feb. 3). David's
entry shows that his tract of 100 Acres lay "about a quarter of a mile from
" John Caygills, Plantation " John was situated at the forks of Bear and
Cavin Creeks (where he remained until his death in 1799). David was situated
on Flat Creek, which appently was a small tributary of either Bear or Cavin
Creek. David's survey, of 100 acres, dose not seem to border directly on
any previously owned land, and county, seems to have been sparsely
populated at that early date. in 1769, David sold is track of land to
William Smith , and moved westward to what is now Cabarrus County, North
Carolina.
David Cagle is known to have ties to three North Carolina regions: (1) Old
Rowan County, 1760, and perhaps also 1750s. Probably lived somewhere along
Deep River, either in Randolph of Guilford, was on tax list , sometime in
1760s, with son John , (2) Old Cumberland County, had land paten at forks
of Bear and Cabin Creeks in 1767, which he sold in 1769. (3) Cabarris
County, then part of Mecklenburg, had land entry in 1779, maybe died there
in 1780s.
Children of Johan Cagle and Katherine Cagle are:
2 i. Charles (Sr)3 Cagle, born 1747 in Rowan County, North Carolina;

Nashville's pioneer, Jacques Timothe Bauchrer Demunbreun. Timothy
Demunbreun Declared " IF that is not spoken for she will be my wife. Mary
Ann had indian ancestry, thus explaining her know repution as a Excellent
mid-wife. and indian Herbologist. thus Mary ann Cagle Demunbreun may have
learned her Herb-doctoring from an indian Mother or a indian grandmother.
As the story goes, The Cagle family, while living in North Carolina, took
