Hi Judy
I havn't done alot of work on Leonhart down to Jacob April 1755 but I will
send you what I have . Leonard 1730's I think is who you are asking about he
was Leonhart's son and Daivd brother
Descendants of (Leonhart Kegell ) Leonard * Cagle
Generation No. 1
1. (Leonhart Kegell ) Leonard *1 Cagle was born 1684 in
Obermehlingen, Germany, and died 1754 in Pensylvinia. He married (1) Maria
Elizabeth (Unkown ) Cagle in Germany. He married (2) (Susanna Kegell )
Susanna * Cagle 1721 in Obermehling , Germany.
Notes for (Leonhart Kegell ) Leonard * Cagle:
Leonard Kegel, Leonard Cagle:
In German Leonhart, Leonhardt, Leinhart, means a shape of a bowling pin, a
shape of a cone, or a pin.
also means brave heart.
Leonhart was married two times.
His first wife was Maria Elisabeth (deceased) last name unknown, Maria was
born in 1687, and from Niedermehlingen, Germany. Together they had a
daughter named Maria Margareta, born in the year 1715. It has been said
there was another child born of this marriage, but there is nothing to prove
or disprove this information.
Confirmation Register 1729;
Maria Margareta, the daughter of Leonhart Kegel, Reformed and his deceased
wife Maria Elisabeth,
Reformed of Niedermenlingen, Germany. daughter 14 years old.
(Margareta Maria, Her real name was Maria Margarita, and her name was
changed because of her mothers death. )
It is not known if Margareta Maria came to America with the family.
Leonhart second marriage:
Leonhart Kegel , his second wife was Susannah and her last name is unknown .
They were married in Germany. Leonhart was born 1684 and was from
Obermehlingen, Germany, and he was married in Germany to Susannah unknown .
Susannah was born in the year 1688 and from Obermehlingen, Germany.
1728, Baptism was found on :
Childs name Johan Theoblad, born the 29 of April and Baptised 1st of May.
Sponcers names, Theobald Fuchs, The sponser from Alsenbon, and his wife
Christina. Andreas Busch from Trippstadt, Reformed.
Parnents names Leonhart Kegel and his wife Susanna Kegel, Reformed from
Obermehlingen, Germany.
Baptism :
1728:
Baptismal register 1728 ,Trippstadt, the 14th of March Johann Andreas
Buschung, and his wife Maria Elisabetha, a daughter baptised and named Maria
Elisabetha. God parents Leonhart Kegel of Mehlingen, Germany, and Maria
Magdalena, Johann Henrich Schmalenberger's Young wife Veronica Phillipp .
Leonhart Kegell , (Leonard Cagle), his wife Susanna and their family , and
other members of the Reformed Lutherans , left Mehlingen, Germany to bring
their familys to America (Mehlingen is 8m- N.E. of Kaiserslautern, on B40)
they went down the Rhine River to Rotterdam, Holland, they then took the
ship called the Loyal Judith Via Cowes England, then from there to the Port
of Philadelphia PA. and landed September 25, 1732. According to English
speaking Captians and Port officials and others and by the German Immigrants
themselves. There were 119 Palentine men and their families, and they were
accompanied by a Lutheran Minister, named was Johannes Christian Schultz.
When the immigrants landed in the Port of Philadelphia, each of the head of
household on board and any on the age of 16 and older were taken to that the
Oath of Allegiance to the provice and State of Pennsylvania. (Leonharts
children would not have been old enough to be on the list. I think William
would have been the oldest son, and he would have only been around ten or so.
and the daughter would not have been on the list if she came to America
because she was a female.) (The information will be in the Colonial records
Vol III, on page 457, ) They did have a language problem and thats was why
there was a problem with the spelling of there names, and there was more than
one person putting their names on different lists. Who ever was putting there
names down spelled them the way they thought it should be, thats why names
are spelled in different ways on these lists. Leonhart's name was spelled
two different ways on the passenger list,
The German Settlers were all industrious, econmical, and thrifty famers,
they were not afraid , nor ashamed of hard work, When Leonhart Kegel arrived
in Philadephia County, they settled , and bought land in Berks County, PA.
. The first settlement by Germans was about 1734, and organized in 1752,
this became the the Capital of Reading. The name Berks County Was derived
form Berks County, England. There was a man named Henrich Krehenhull , who
changed his name to Henry Graybill Jr. who also lived in Mehlingen, Germany ,
the same time as did Leonhart and his family. Henry Graybill Jr. lived in
Lancaster county, PA. and later moved to Hancock County, GA. (not sure if he
came over on the same ship, as did Leonhart ?) It is not known if Leonhart
and Susanna died in PA. , or moved with sons to North Carolina ?.
Leonhart Kegel had a large black hat , he wore most of the time , he handed
the hat down to his son John "Dutchman" Kegel , who died 1799 in North
Carolina . John "Dutchman" handed the hat down to his youngest son ,
William who was born 1788-1860. William passed the hat down to his son
Isaac, who was born 1790-1860. Isaac gave the hat to his oldest son John
Westley , who in turn handed it down to his brother Spinks. Spinks then gave
the hat to his sister , who sold the hat to Neil Isaac Andrew Cagle , he in
turn gave the the hat to Bob Baker who donated the Hat to the Rocky Mt.
Museum. (I have seen a photo of the hat, it looks like a big top hat.) and
is still in the museum.
There was also a chair that Leonhart would stand on while waiting for his
father to come home from work. This chair was also donated to a Museum ,
(Not the same Museum.) and this Museum later burned down , this Museum was
in PA. , so there must have been some of his children and or grandchildren
who stayed in PA.
Leonhart Kegel was the ancestor of Americans numbering some 17,000 ,
individuals, plus. Thousands of other desendents who bear other surnames.
It was not uncommon for German people to be known by more than one name,
since they used there middle names.
It has been said that the Kegel's changed the spelling of their names when
they moved to North Carolina .

Acres 100
Grant No 374
Issued Apr 25, 1767
Warrent No.
Entry No. 95
Entered April 21, 1764
Book No 23 Page No 24
Location on both sides of Flatt Creek.
Notes : David Cagle, and his presumed brother John "Dutchman" Cagle,
Acquired land near the same time in early 1764, David's by land entry
(April 21, ) and John's purchase from James Cheney (Feb. 3). David's
entry shows that his tract of 100 Acres lay "about a quarter of a mile from
" John Caygills, Plantation " John was situated at the forks of Bear and
Cavin Creeks (where he remained until his death in 1799). David was situated
on Flat Creek, which appently was a small tributary of either Bear or Cavin
Creek. David's survey, of 100 acres, dose not seem to border directly on
any previously owned land, and county, seems to have been sparsely
populated at that early date. in 1769, David sold is track of land to
William Smith , and moved westward to what is now Cabarrus County, North
Carolina.
David Cagle is known to have ties to three North Carolina regions: (1) Old
Rowan County, 1760, and perhaps also 1750s. Probably lived somewhere along
Deep River, either in Randolph of Guilford, was on tax list , sometime in
1760s, with son John , (2) Old Cumberland County, had land paten at forks
of Bear and Cabin Creeks in 1767, which he sold in 1769. (3) Cabarris
County, then part of Mecklenburg, had land entry in 1779, maybe died there
in 1780s.
6 iv. Henrich "Henry" Cagle, born 1730 in Obermehlingen
Germany or Rotterdam Holland; died March 22, 1802 in Moore County, North
Carolina. He married Catherana Setiz Abt. 1753 in PA..
Notes for Henrich "Henry" Cagle:
Henry has listed himself as property owner in Moore County, North Carolina as
early as 1768 and remained until his death in 1802.
1790 Moore County, North Carolina
Cagle, Henry , Sr. 3-4-4
1800 Moore County, North Carolina
Cagle, Henry 03101 -00001 (1802)
Had land on Buffalo River.
Henry homeplace was on upper Bear Creek in N.W. Moore County, North
Carolina.
Herer are the descendants of Henry Cagle, Sr. (D.1802), who lived on and
near the Cagle homeplace on upper Creek in N.W. Moore County. George, 78,
(1782-1864) was son of Henry Sr. : Enoch, 49, was s/o George. The
household of Jesse, 43, and Sallie , 57, were the children & grandchildren of
Jacob Cagle (B-1770s D 1840s) the older brother of George, Jesse and his
brother Lindsey 31, would become the large Cagle landowners of the region.
Households #1018, 1019, and # 1020 seem to represent the decendants of
Henry Cagle , Jr. (B.1770s - 1830s). Sarah 53, was the widow of Jonathan
(AGE 46 IN 1850), and Dempsey 27, was her son ..

David Cagle (I have no dates) married Betty Stogner Apr 8, 1806 in Cabarrus
Co, NC. One child was George (b. 1808) who married Milly Hinson (who were
her parents and sibs?)(Milly b. 1814). George and Milly said to have died in
Morgan Co, AL. These Cagles seem to have moved to Morgan Co at abt the same
time as did the family of
Daniel and Catherine Light Eudy. In fact, there is some intermarriage for
these two families.
Thx.

Nancy did you know my Aunt Goldie Cagle the daughter of Arniel Lavere Cagle
and Louisia Belt married into your Cagle family after her 1st husband died.
She married Johnny Edgar Cagle, the son of John Riley Cagle & Clara M
Standridge. He was a Barber there at Ozark for 30 years. He probably still
does part time. I have a folder with all the Cagle obituaries pertaining to
his family stashed some place around here. I had forgot about that. Do you
want me to check and see which ones I have.

Hi List,
I recently received a letter from a woman in charge of a genealogy web site
in Wrangel Alaska. In looking over the site I found the Cagle's listed
below. From what I understand names were taken from newspapers so the
numbers and initials in the list relate to the newspaper. At least it gives
us an idea of names and dates. I've also included the site URL so you can
look around.
Have a Good Week-end!

Hi,
It has been a while since I posted. Maybe someone has new
information and can help me now. All I have is what my grandparents
know. Any info, help or advice would greatly
appreciated.
This family lived in Union Co., Cherokee Co., Pickens Co., Ga as far as
grandparents can
remember.
They think maybe generation before could have migrated from North
Carolina.

was the wife of Jeremaih "Jerry" Standridge ,she died on September 25, 1880 ,
probably in Kansas. The next one to die was either Alexander Standridge
who was the husband of Mary Elizabeth Tilley Standridge, or Lydia Margaret
"Lidie" Standridge Cagle, who was the wife of Charles Arter Cagle. Lydia
had just had a child Melvira V. on September 14, 1880, two weeks before she
became ill and died in the wagon trian camp, on September 30. 1880, in
Americus , Lyon County, Kansas . (Americus is located in and or near Emporia
Kansas ) . Charles loved his wife and wanted to give her a proper buriel ,
so he cut off Lydia's long dark hair and sold it to a man who made horse
whips out of it, in exchange the man paid for the to be buried. Alexander
died two days before or two days after Lydia . There were a few others that
were ill , one of them is thought to have been Burton Columbus Cagle , his
name never showed up after this trip, he was one of Charles sons, Charles
and Lydia had eight children together , only 5 children lived. Charles
hired a wet nurse to feed and take care of his new baby and his small
children . The wet nurse Charles hired was Mary Elizabeth Tilley Standridge
whom he married in 1881, in Newton County, Ar. Charles and Mary married
on March 27, 1881, and had 12 more children and they lived together as
husband and wife for 43 years , till his death. There is a couple of letters
in the application for the widows penison file , one from his sister
Margaret C. Cagle Hubble , from Eufaula , Okalhoma , in this letter she
tells just a little about the wagon train, one from his daughter Mary Ann
Cagle Tilley and her husband John Riley Tilley. (They followed the Oregon
Trail , along the Snake River to Oregon and back home to Arkansas.)

When Margaret Emeline was four years old she was bitten four times by a
rattle snake before her father Charles could get to her.
By the time Emeline (Margaret Emeline Cagle) was seven years old , she helped
break wild horses . Charles would round up the horses and when they were
broke he would take them into town and sell them .
Two daughters Paulina and Minerva Brown, had witnessed, the killing of their
father, Joseph Brown, on the north fork of the Bayou about 1863. In later
years, both Pauline and Minerva Brown, recogized the man that had killed
their father, the following story was related to Pauline (Brown ) Freeman's
Grand- daughter Eunice and Marie Freeman. A preacher had become a member of
the Strawberry Commumity Chruch, near Hagarville, Arkansas, where Pauline,
Minerva and their mother Kiziah attended church services. after church the
daughters told their mother that the Preacher Charlie Cagle was the one they
saw kill Their father, Joseph Brown. The news grieved Kiziah, but she said
"If the Lord could forgive him, I guess I can.

Notes for John Wesley (Jr.) Standridge:
John enlisted in Company C. 1st. Arkansas Infantry, Union on February 12,
1863 and was killed by bushwhackers at his home on Frbruary 19, 1865.
His war record states that he was 5' 9" tall, fair complexion, hazel eyes and
light hair . the record also states that John was in camp at Fort Smith and
received word that his father and two brothers had been killed by
bushwhackers at and their families had been robbed of their food and clothing
.
John was in the Civil War, John was a private in the Arkansas Infantry
February 12,1863. His Captains name was James R. Vanderpool and the lieut.
was Jack Case. He was reported murderd shot several times by Querrill on
February 19, 1865 while home without leave. His wife Susanna "Susan" Cagle
age 23 years old with three small children sent in an application for pension
no. 123,212, . Application was rejected June 19, 1866 , soldier murdered
while absent without leave.
Susan had written John a letter while he was at Fort Smith, Arkansas to tell
him that his father John, and two of his brothers lemuel and Washington were
murderd and that they had been robbed of all there food and clothing. Susan
and thier three small children lived there with the family. John had come
home to help them get some food and clothing. John had only been home one
day beforn Querrill and his men came back and shot him several time and
murderd him.
There is a letter that said John came home on furlough near the close of the
war to see his family and was killed the next day by Querrill bushwackers.
he was reported by by enemies to be a deserter but his old widow of this
place now 82 years old declares he was not. Susan and her children never
believed him guilty of desertion.
Captian Vanderpool testified at John's hearing, that he fully believed that
John would return to his unit after helping his family and got the charges
reduced from desertion to A.W.O.L.
Susan did receive a bounty from the government for John's service, but did
not get a pension because he was A.W.O.L. at the time of his death. She
moved to Stone County , Missouri shortly thereafter. Her tombstone at
Galena, Missouri gives dates of 1840 to 1927. (this was in C.L Boyd's
book on page 900.
I have a copy of the Application of the Pension , sent to me by C. L. Boyd.
Hear is a story out of the book Standridge, sent in by Evelyn Flood , in C.L.
Boyd book
The Hanging in Limestone Valley , Newton County, Arkansas - May 29, 1863.
Sent in By Evelyn Flood as printed in the Newton County Family History.
On March 24, 1863, Captain J. R. Vanderpool of Company C, 1st. Arkansas
Infantry (under Colonel James M. Johnson) was ordered from Fayetteville,
Arkansas, along with Captain Abial Stevens of Company E, 1st. Regular
Arkansas Infantry and a group of men to go to Newton County for scouting.
They encountered many Confederate forces and retreated to the post at
Fayetteville, leaving several union men behind. When these men returned to
Fayetteville, they found that the post had been evacuated on April 16, 1863.
They were then at high risk of being captured by Confederates and had to
hide.
those known to be left behind were Gilbert Smith, David Flood, James Smith,
(Gilbert's brother and David's brother-in-law), John Standridge, Kelsey
Gilmore, O. C. Bright and possibly others. All of these men were taken
prisoner, plus David's neighbor, Berry Stone (who may have hidden these
men) . Someone had a knife and some of the men cut themselves loose and
escaped. David Flood, his brother-in-law James Smith , and Berry Stone
were hanged by Confederates on the same tree, supposedly in Linestone Valley.
" you could see the rope marks one year later, " according to one source.
When David Flood was taken prisoner, his wife Martha followed after the men
pleading; but they were hanged anyway. John Standridge and the others
returned to their command. John Standridge later heard of his father's &
brothers death and returned to Newton County to help find them food, clothing
and protect his family. He was also killed by the bushwhackers on February
19, 1865. his widow was unable to draw his pension since he had been absent
without leave. (this account has been taken from many depositions and
pension records from various men.)

The Wagon Train
In 1878 there was a group of family members who headed off for Oregon .
They were mostly all from Newton County, Arkansas . The names of the
families were Cagle, Standridge , Meek/Meeks, Lane , Adams, Nolan and Rigney.
Charles Arter Cagle was a Farmer , Baptist Minister , and a Wagon Train
Driver . It has never been said if Charles was the head of the Wagon Train
or not, they stoped in Idaho , some say because of illness ? Some of the
familys lived in Albion and some in the 14th. district, they worked as farm
laborers and cooks, while living there . They were all listed in the 1878
and 1880, Idaho Census. ( They were also listed in the 1884 census of Idaho )
. For some unknown reason the familys decided to go back home to Newton
County, Arkansas. They left right after May 31, 1880, after the census was
taken, It would have taken 4 to 5 months to get back to Arkansas . On the
way home some of the family members drank water from a well or river and
became ill with Typhoid Fever, The first known to have died is Nancy Cagle
Standridge , she
