I'm not saying that the William Cady who died in Andersonville is MY Cady.
It isnt. And it is Jennings, not Jemmings. I dont have much on her
either. One by one. :) Maybe I will work on her next. I have my
Ancestry membership till Sept and I will just play with it till then.
After that, I can get free from the library if I go down. But I'm never
going to be a fanatic. Or should I say, I'm never going to be really
serious. It is just a fun hobby for awhile. Thanks again for the
encouragement. Diana

I also take trips to the Allen County Library in Fort Wayne. I have
access to
Famiysearch.org (Free)
Ancestry.com (Available at Library) and
MyHeritage/Geni. Rootweb is now owned by
Ancestry.com and it was the place
to go back in the early 2000’s. Don’t be discouraged, when I started my
ancestor was listed in “Cady Genealogy” by Dr James W Cady as disconnected
and many researchers had him listed incorrectly with other families. I kept
looking for info on his relatives and eventually pieced it together.
William is a common name, which makes it hard. But his wife Sarah
Caroline Jemmings is your best lead. Jemmings is possibly German, I also
have a ggg-grandmother Jemmings. You know William served with the Union
Army, so check out his company (Many were from the same county, look for
relatives especially the wife’s) Find where they were married and you will
find his parents. But, NY Counties reorganized many times between 1791 and
1840, use
Wikipedia.com to look at county history. Cattaraugus County, NY
only formed in 1808 and was part of the Holland Purchase. Look for records
in Batavia, NY
Many from New England moved into New York and Vermont, but cheap land and
technology made opportunities in the west attractive. Most were farmers,
and land records still exist.

Subject: [CADY] Re: parentage of William Cady
Dear Jim Thanks so much for all your work. I will print off your letter
and keep it with all my other stuff. I am a beginner and will probably
never progress, but it has been fun. Yes, my Cady is the Erie, Ohio Cady,
married to Sarah Caroline. All my father's family is connected to Sandusky
and area in Ohio. Looks like William Cady (b. 1825 in Baden, Waterloo) is
my third great grandfather and the record isnt going anywhere after that.
When I signed in to Rootsweb, something came up that listed ALL the
William Cadys. Wow, there were a lot of William Cadys. None of them
looked like mine. But an interesting thing, as I looked at the list, one
of them died in 1864 at Andersonville,Georgia. That means he was a Union
prisoner and died at the infamous Civil War prison. So many interesting
things. So even though I didnt find my Cady, there was much of interest
there. We have an outstanding genealogy library here in Ft. Wayne. One of
the best and lots of helpful librarians. The big genealogy convention was
held here last year and hundreds of people came, including a friend of mine
from North Carolina. Thanks again for the information. Best of wishes,
Diana
