Hi everybody,
A couple of questions.
Has anyone found any document actually proving that
1. Charle L. Cady, associated with Henry Cady from 1850-1860, was
actually his father, or was actually the Charles Lewis Cady born to Stoddard and
Abigail Cady?
2. Charles Lewis Cady of Donner Party infamy was actually the son of
Charles L. Cady?
We've all been sharing lots of circumstantial evidence here, and Karen Jenter
has lots of primary documents that will help, but I've found that two people
with the same name, same birth date, and same supposed birthplace are not
necessarily the same person. Until we make that proven connection, it is still a
leap. For example there were at least 8 Charles L. Cadys in 1900.
Some things we all need to look for are:
1. a probate record for Charles L. Cady.
2. a marriage record for Charles and each of his Sarahs. (I don't even think
one exists for Henry and Mary Etta - but it is verified in her widow's
pension)
3. a death record for the first Sarah would be nice.
Lastly, ajoseph(forgot your name, sorry, you have a good idea that the Donnor
Charles Lewis Cady's mother might have been named Lewis, but if he's a son of
our Charles Lewis then the name Lewis was already in the family. I knew he
was too young to be "my" Charles, I never considered the possibility that he
could be a brother to my Henry. He was born 1824 NY, Henry was born 1827 NY,
Ervin was born 1825 NY, and James was born 1815 NY. Of the four, James is
the most questionable, but not impossible. (Living near Charles Cady in 1870 in
Alcona, MI, and lists Father b. MA, and Mother b. RI. Next door to Samuel
and Ellen Cady Stafford.) Have you ever looked for civil war records on the
Donner Charles?
Just some thoughts,
Brenda
