I was researching something else and ran across these items; I thought it may assist
someone. I have no further info and I am not researching this line:
Petersburg Daily Index, December 23, 1869:
"A Commission met in Richmond Tuesday for the trial of George S. Cady, ex-sheriff of
Culpeper county, who was arrested some time since by orders from Gen. Canby, for having
collected taxes while sheriff, and pocketing the same."
Petersburg Daily Index, December 29, 1869
"The announcement of the sentence of Geo. S. Cady, late sheriff of Culpeper, to five
years in the Penitentiary for misappropriation of public funds created great surprise in
this city [Richmond]. the military commission adjourned to this city only about a week ago
and has been in session at headquarters. General Canby has not yet approved the findings,
but it is said he will do so as soon as the papers reach him."
Petersburg Daily Index, January 19, 1870:
"Cady, the defaulting sheriff of Culpeper county, has been sentenced to three
years' confinement in the penitentiary by a military court."
