Are Joseph Cleveland Cady and Jerusha "Lucy" Hutchins. Joseph had four sons,
the first died as an infant. In the 1800 Federal Census I found Joseph in Connecticut with
three young sons. (David, Benjamin and John).
There were alot of assumptions by past researchers. Benjamin was not born in Ohio, he was
married in Ohio and that is all that was known for sure.
Joseph Cleveland was the son of David grandson of David. David came to Northeast
Connecticut with his two brothers Nicholas and Joseph. (There is a nice write up in
Putman, Windham Co history about the three brothers.) The house passed to David Jr but
JC did not inherit the farm and probably lived near by. As Joseph Cleveland did not live
in town, most of his children are not recorded in the church records of Killingly, CT.*
Records indicate Joseph and family moved to Otsego Co, NY in 1802 or 03, they were in
Batavia NY in 1805. The Federal Census of 1810 shows an S Cady with seven children in
Otsego Co. NY. I believe the S is actually a J or an L and represents our Joseph Cleveland
or Lucy. Horace (1801)in CT, Chauncey (1803), Lucy (1805) and Henry (1807) were born in
NY. So the evidence is good, the right number of Children and birth records showing three
from NY and four from CT. Lucy Hutchins reportedly died in 1839(?) but JC reportedly
married Mary Rosencrantz in 1808 and Julia Ann was born in 1809, I cannot account for them
yet.
The evidence that BJ belonged to the family of Naham, does not bear out. A researcher
listed children to Naham that belonged to Col. Joseph Cady and Lucy Leavens, who are
listed in the church records of Killingly. At present the only child of Naham is a son
Naham Jr but little is known about him. If he had a son the age of Benjamin Johnson he
would have been over 45
