Lovely Blessing and thank you so much for sharing. Its a loss to the Cady
family at large. I had heard that Dr. Cady had been ailing the past few
years and unable to do much on the planned further update to the Cady
genealogy. I never met or corresponded with him but I think my father did at
one time and filled out a "tree" for our branch of the family for him. My
Cady genealogy is through my father's mother, Jennie (Cady) Lamb of
Hinckley, NY.

I have Louis's permission to send this on to yo'all:
Dr. J. W. Cady, Former President of Texarkana Community College
1918 - 2006
Dr. J.W. Cady, Ed.D., age 88, passed away on Friday, September 8, at
Cornerstone Memorial Retirement Community.
Dr. Cady was born in Rogers, Arkansas on July 15, 1918 to George Byron
Cady
and Vivian Vere Cruz, and married Claire Elizabeth Benson on Valentine’s
Day,
February 14, 1941.
Dr. Cady, or “Jim” as he was known to his friends, had a long and
distinguished career in education and in public service. All three of
his educational
degrees were obtained from the University of Arkansas. He obtained the
B.A.
with a major in mathematics in 1940. In his undergraduate career, he
recalled with glee traveling as a University of Arkansas band member and
storing a
folding Kodak camera in the bell of his baritone saxophone.
His education was interrupted during World War II where he served in the
Army
Air Corps as a hydraulics technician. He then completed his education,
earning the B.S.E. degree in 1949, and the first Doctorate of Education
degree
ever awarded at the University in 1953. He was a dedicated “Razorback”
and
University of Arkansas supporter all of his life.
Dr. Cady’s educational career was long and varied. He taught band in
high
school, served as school principal, directed religious education for two
Little
Rock churches, and was Dean of Students and then Dean of Faculty at
Ouachita
Baptist University prior to coming to Texarkana to assume the presidency
of
Texarkana Community College. His tenure as president of TCC from
1964-1974 was
marked with his focus on excellence and teamwork, and with significant
development of the physical plant of the College. This included the
building of
new chemistry, biology, nursing and vocational technical buildings, as
well as a
new library, a new aquatics facility with an Olympic sized swimming pool
and
several other projects. In his 50’s, Dr. Cady earned his private pilot’s
license and instrument certification in the aviation program at TCC, and
then
used his new skills to frequently fly himself back and forth to Austin, TX
to
request more funding in educational appropriations by the Texas
legislature for
Texarkana College, usually successfully.
Following his departure from Texarkana College, Dr. Cady continued his
work
in education, serving as Director of Financial Aid at Texas Women’s
University
in Denton, TX, and then Vice President of Academic Affairs at Howard Payne
University in Brownwood, TX. He and his wife, Claire, retired from his
position
back to their home in Denton, eventually moving back to Texarkana – the
city
that he and his wife considered their real home - in the 1990’s. His
lifelong hobbies included reading and photography. In his retirement, he
researched and published an updated Cady Genealogy which achieved national
distribution. He was known for his custom-composed poems which he would
frequently use
in his Sunday School lectures. A riveting public speaker, Dr. Cady
continued
to use his talents in his retirement with his church ministries.
Dr. Cady was active in church work and public service, serving as
Superintendent and Adult Sunday School coordinator at First Baptist Church
in Denton, TX.
Prior to his residency at Cornerstone, he and his wife Claire were
active
in their Sunday School at First Baptist Church in Texarkana. Dr. Cady
was
president of the downtown Rotary Club of Texarkana, TX from 1967-1968, and
was
elected District Governor of Rotary District 581, serving in that position
in
1971-1972. He was a lifelong devoted husband, father, and doting
grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Claire, age 93, and their one son, Louis B.
Cady,
M.D., daughter-in-law, Janet, and their two sons, Richard and Marcus. He
is
also survived by his brother-in-law, John B. Benson and wife, Marie, of
Texarkana and their two children, Michael and Elizabeth.
Funeral Services will be 10 A.M. Tuesday at First Baptist Church Moors
Lane
with Rev. Ron Kurtz officiating. The eulogy will be by Dr. Louis Cady.
Burial
will be in Waldo Cemetery under the direction of Texarkana Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 6
to
7:30 P.M.
MAKE ME A BLESSING
by Jim Cady, September, 1989
for Adult Department 4
First Baptist Church, Denton, Texas
Count your many blessings,
Every doubt will fly,
This I will surely remember
As my days go swiftly by.
My aches and pains increase,
And my money’s not enough,
But I know that through it all
Life’s not always bad and rough.
For I pause to look around me
At the others that I see,
And again I count my blessings
For the good God gives to me.
Can I simply sit and grasp it all,
Or should I plan to give
Some blessings yet to others
For their happiness as they live?
Forgive me, Lord, for sitting here
Proud and selfish that I be,
As I think of all the others
Who need blessings along with me.
Lord, make me a channel of blessing
As I go about my tasks,
May I learn to think more of others
Is the prayer today I ask.
Again, I count my many blessings,
And my doubts go far away,
For today I will become a blessing
And help others through the day.
