Thanks to everyone who have sent me ideas regarding my 3rd-great-gradfather, William
Augustus Cady of Brooklyn, Connecticut.
There was quite a clan of Cady families living in Brooklyn, which was broken off from
Pomfret, in Windham County, Connecticut. In the 1810 census, 16 Cady families are listed,
most living in various clusters. I had previously identified my Wm. Augustus as the son
of Eliakim Cady and Jerusha Spalding; birth 16 April 1803 Brooklyn; death 12 May 1882,
Brooklyn; then I was told by a Cady researcher that I was wrong. However, this fellow
gave me no proof nor sources when I asked.
I have looked at every Windham County record I can find. While there seems to be several
William Cadys, I find only two who used the middle initial A. One is William Akins Cady,
who later went to Tolland Co., Conn. So I come back time and time again, to the above Wm.
A. The Vinton Memorial, which is the genealogy of W. A.'s wife Melita Vinton, clearly
calls him William Augustus of Brooklyn. Their daughter, Sarah, called him
"August" Cady in an interview with the newspaper in the 1930's. (She lived
well into her 90's.) I have found him in the 1840 & 1850 censuses and his
marriage record under William A. An Augustus Cady pops up in Woodstock, Conn. in 1860,
with a different wife; but Melita died in 1851, so if this is he, he must have remarried.
He is always a farmer or farm laborer in the censuses. Brooklyn has his death record, and
he is a laborer.
The William Akins Cady, above, the one who went to Tolland, is the one I think the
researcher has mixed up with my Wm. Augustus.
Putting it all together, I am inclined to go with my first instinct--that my line does
indeed come from Eliakim and Jerusha. But I will keep at it!
I wish you all a very happy holiday season,
Suzanne
