Brenda -
We have been in touch before but just found your latest query and wondered
what you had discovered about your guy since we last talked - I am sending you
all of the notes that I have on him - Stoddard Cady was the brother of my
Charles Cady, b. 1 Jan 1748 of Ezekeil and Abigail Stoddard. Unfortunately I
entered all of this info before I started to put in attributions so some of
this may be from you --

Charles (Lewis?) Cady went to California in 1846, lived at New Helvetia, San
Rafael, and Sonoma and finally at Sutterville, where he built the town's
second house. On July 24, 1847, he inaugerated the first weekly mail express
between San Francisco and Sutter's Fort, but since he could not maintain the
schedule, Cady quit, but others took up the project and the mail express was
underway.
He is mentioned derogatorialy as a member of the 2nd Donner Relief Party in
the Diary, dated from Sunday, Feb. 7 to Sunday, March 6, 1846, of James Reed
who led the rescue effor, but was later exhonorated.

WE ARE NOT CERTAIN THAT THIS IS THE SAME CHARLES, NO MIDDLE NAME IS IN CA.
RECORDS -
In C. F. McGlashan papers at Bancroft -- ; In the spring of 1879 survivor
William C. Graves saw Cady, who told him that he ( Cady) was born in Buffalo, N.
Y. , on September 19th 1824. Graves also warned historian McBlashan not to
trust Cady with any oney because he "drinks too much."

Name: Charles Lewis CADY
Sex: M
Birth: 28 JUL 1791 in Brookfield, Worcester Co.?, Massachusetts
Death: ABT 1865 in Van Buren Co., Iowa?
Occupation: Cabinet maker
Note:
There is strong circumstantial evidence, but no proof, that
Henry Cady was Charles' son - by an unknown first wife. His
second wife was Sarah (25 years younger than him), with whom he
had at least two children. Charles migrated to Iowa via New
York (supposedly) and Pennsylvania. A Charles L. Cady lived in
Florence, Oneida County, New York, in 1820, according to the
U.S. census. His Uncle Charles' (dead by 1800) family lived
there for 4-5 decades. Two Charles were recorded there for the
next two censuses. The second Charles was probably his first
cousin who, by 1830, was old enough to be recorded as
head-of-household (He was nine years younger.). This first
cousin was identified in the 1840 census by his middle initial J
(Jarvis). By 1850, only one Charles (presumably Charles Jarvis)
remained in Florence. To complicate matters, the latter's
wife's name was Sarah and one of his sons' was Henry! (The ages
don't match Charles L.'s family.) According to the 1850
Pennsylvania census, Charles L., Sarah (born in Pennsylvania),
and family lived in Union twsp., Fayette County. His family
included Deborah, age 12, b. New York, and a seven year old girl
with the last name of Beal, older by 4 years than their oldest
child, all born in Pennsylvania. By the 1860 Iowa census, Miss
Beal's last name had been changed to Cady. In the town's tax
rolls of 1852, Henry Cady was listed as owning one lot. Henry
married Mary Etta McCoy, b. PA, in 1853. In the 1860 Iowa
census, Charles and Sarah's family lived next door to Henry and
Mary Etta's family in Washington twsp., Van Buren Co. By 1870,
Henry and family were in Palmyra, Warren Co., Iowa, and Charles
had disappeared. The birthdate and state of the aforementioned
Charles L. is consistent with those of Stoddard's son, Charles
Lewis Cady. Also, Charles was a carpenter/cabinet maker and
Henry listed his occupation as carpenter on his Civil War
enlistment papers.
Note:
Note:
Coincidentally, at the same time, there was a Charles Lewis Cady
in the Sonoma, San Rafael, San Francisco area and Sutterville
(Sacramento), California. This Charles Lewis instituted the
first pony express between San Francisco and Sutter's Mill (gold
strike fame) on July 24, 1847. He did it on a weekly basis for
about a year and then had to leave because he couldn't maintain
the schedule. Others, who took over, did make it a success. He
died in Oklahoma in 1876.

Name: Henry CADY
Sex: M
Birth: 7 NOV 1827 in Erie County, New York
Death: 15 JUL 1898 in Fitzgerald, Irwin Co. (now Ben Hill Co.), Georgia
Occupation: Carpenter, Farmer, Civil War Veteran, "Poorhouse" manager
Note:
According to state censuses, by 1850, Henry's family was in
Uniontown, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania. (They were there as early
as 1846/7.) There is strong circumstantial evidence, but no
proof, that the head-of-household, Charles Lewis Cady, was his
father who was married to his second wife, Sarah (11 years older
than Henry and 24 years younger than Charles) by then, and had
started a second family as well (the oldest = 3 years old).
According to the town's tax rolls of 1852, Henry Cad(e)y owned a
lot there. He held on to it for 43 years even though he didn't
live in the state for almost the entire time! (Henry sold it to
James H. Golden as recorded on April 4, 1895, in the Fayette
County Grantors Index to Deeds, 1784-1899, C1.) In 1853, Henry
married Mary Etta McCoy and by 1855, they had their first child
in Iowa. And by 1860, he and his young family of three children
lived next door to Charles Lewis' family in Washington township,
Van Buren County, Iowa. Henry's oldest daughter was named
Sarah, the same name as his probable stepmother.
Note:
Note:
Henry fought in the Civil War (1862-65) in Co. A, 39th regiment,
Iowa Volunteer Infantry and received a veteran's pension as a
result. Due to a hernia, he served as a medical orderly or cook
during most of the war. His regiment was with U. S. Grant on
his march to the sea. It must have made quite an impression on
him, because he apparently renamed his oldest son, William
Lincoln, and named another one, Ulysses S. Grant. About 11
years after the war, a falling tree limb hit Henry's head and he
suffered from then on from partial paralysis, severe headaches,
dizziness, and tremors to the point that he could not do manual
labor.
Note:
Note:
From 1865-68, Henry and family lived in Winterset, Madison
County, Iowa; then Palmyra, Warren County, 1868-71 (In the
1870 Census, Charles Lewis had disappeared.); and in Maryville,
Nodaway Co., Missouri, 1871-80. In the 1880 Census, Henry was
running the county "poorhouse". In 1880, he and most of the
family moved to Custer County, Nebraska (central), making them
all pioneer settlers there. Although their postal address was
Mason City, they are listed in the 1885 Elk Creek twsp. Census.
(In this same census, Henry said his father was born in Vermont,
and his mother in Rhode Island.) Henry and Ulysses G Cady
bought the same section of land as listed in the Custer Co.
Homesteads and Timber Claims from the U.S. General Land Office
Tract Books. No date is available because those pages are
missing! Custer County's 1886 Farmers and Ranchers Census lists
only Henry and W. L. Cady at Tufford (town? - no longer exists).
Note:
Note:
Henry and Mary Etta moved back to Fayette County (Hopwood - SE
of Uniontown), Pennsylvania in 1892-5. The last years of his
life, he and Mary Etta lived in Fitzgerald, Irwin County,
Georgia (S central). They had moved there with many northern
Civil War veterans due to hard times. Understandably, the locals
did not welcome them. His death was due to suicide so a local
jury found, not foul play: possibly, since he apparently
suffered continuous pain and dizzyness from his earlier head
injury.

More About HENRY CADY:
Census: 1885, Nebraska, Elk Creek, Custer Co.
Military service: Served in Civil War.
Occupation: Carpenter, Farmer, Poor House Mgr.
Notes for MARY ETTA MCCOY:
Note:
Mary could have been named after her probable paternal aunt and
great aunt. The 1850 Uniontown, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania
census doesn't list a McCoy household, but does list Mary,
Hannah, and John of the right ages in other households, with the
latter apprenticed as a carpenter. Possibly one or both parents
were dead. According to the 1870 Iowa Census, Mary Etta's older
brother, John B. McCoy (Jr.), and family lived next door.
Around 1900, he was in Cloud Co., Kansas (N central), where Mary
Etta filed for her Veteran's Widow's pension. Mary Etta's
ancestors seem to be Scotch and Irish: McCoy, Aken, Gaddis, and
Bruce. (Granny [Grace] used to refer to her "scottish
ancestry". - Suewiya G. Pickett, 5/2/1999)
