Hi Beth,
You've been looking for Merritt for a long time. I spent my lunch hour poking around

Sarah Cady Wilson , born abt 1844;
Merritt A. Cady, born 1845;
Henrietta Cady, born 1848;
Ella Cady Crawford , born abt 1855;
Mary Jane Cady Gillett, wife of Isaac Gillett, a florist in Watervliet, NY.
Joseph and Sarah Cady were the parents of <...>

has Merritt with the siblings and parents mentioned by Margaret Kelly-Hamrick.
The Ancestry census images for 1850 are indexed. There is no "William Cady" in
Albany County. There are three or four close ("Goay" and "Cary", for
instance) but the images are missing. The 1860 images are not indexed. There are 376 of
them altogether for Watervliet and West Troy. If you can find an index to the 1860 and
come up with page numbers, I will try to find him for you. He was 15 - 20 years old and
probably still with his parents.
