OOooh, that was quick. Thank you so much. I have most of the information,
but the other son of Andrew, the one Benjamin, I did not have the spouse
Hannah's maiden name or parent and now I do!!!
And Hannah Smith ties in with another branch I have been researching. So,
thank you so much.
Another child of Darius, Jennie, sister to James Popple Cady, is my
grandmother, the one who married Lamb.
I can confirm that Andrew's wife, Martha Gallup Cady did die in Remsen or at
least at a time that she was resident in Remsen, and she is buried in the
Prospect Cemetery, a short distance from where they lived, and their
descendants through Andrew Gilson lived for a hundred years. My information
is that they came to Oneida Co a bit earlier than it says in the book, in
1798, stopping for a short time in Norway, Herkimer Co. but "not liking it
much there" came over to Oneida Co and settled in Remsen. She was from
Voluntown, CT and was dau. of Benjamin and Amy Gallup. He from Preston, (now
Groton) Ct. They had built a log cabin when first arriving in 1798, and
later built a large farm house on the new plank road to Watertown. They were
hosts to bivoac in their orchard by the Sacket's Harbor Raiders on the way
to Watertown, who ate up all their cheese and apples. When they were still
living in the log cabin, Martha went out to feed the chickens one morning,
and had to kill a wolf in the backyard. It was very much wilderness around
them, then, and acres and acres had to be cleared of virgin timber and rocks
in order to build their farm. Perhaps the discrepancies in the dates of
arrival may be that he came on ahead to build and clear and she stayed in
Ct, or that they maintained their primary residence in CT until the new land
was ready. Or, she may have gone back "home" to relatives for birth of
children, as where they settled in Oneida Co didn't get too civilized til
after 1805 or so, I think.
Andrew and Martha are a pair of my most favorite of anscestors, perhaps
because I have papers and letters of theirs that have survived 200 years
that make them feel so "real". . So, I offer these little stories in thanks
for the lookup.
I also wanted to confirm that branch was in the Jim Cady revision before I
made big effort to obtain a copy. Now, I know!!!
Thank you again.
