Frieda Cady, a minister's daughter
who grew up in Colorado before settling
in Northern California, died Friday in
Sebastopol
She was 92.
A native of Brighton, Colo., she was
one of eight children of a Lutheran
minister. After completing high school,
she moved to Daly City, where an older
brother already had settled.
She was married to Virgil Cady and
they lived in the Bay Area for more than
30 years before retiring to Sebastopol
in the mid-1960s, moving into a home
they built for themselves.
Nicknamed Fritz by her husband, she
was an active member of Mt. Olive
Lutheran Church. A homemaker throughout
her adult life, Cady went to work
briefly during World War II, packing
radio tubes on the night shift at the
Itel-McCullough plant in San Bruno.
She enjoyed gardening, weekly
lunches and card games with her friends,
and spending time with her grandchildren
and great-grandchildren.
"She and my dad used to plant a big
vegetable garden every year," Cady's
daughter, Lorraine Drake, said
Wednesday.
One of her favorite adventures was a
trip to Alaska to visit a nephew.
Virgil Cady had traveled to Alaska on a
sailing ship and "one of her ambitions
was to go there," Drake said.
The Cady's were married for 60 years
before Virgil's death 12 years ago.
In addition to her daughter, Cady is
survived by two sons, Gordon Cady of
Thayne, Wyo. and Norman Cady of Ross, a
sister, 12 grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for family and
friends will be held April 20 at the
family residence.
Memorial contributions may be made
to the Visiting Nurses Association &
Home Hospice, 1110 Dutton Ave., Santa
Rosa 95401.
