Hmmm, as I understand it, this is how it works..
01) LDS extract names from various sources,
add as they find to the database. (IGI)
02) Members of the church find info on their ancestors,
and by doing Temple work, add the names to the
database (IGI)
03) Anyone may add their data to the Ancestral file.
04) Anyone may add their data to the PRF
05) Anyone may add their webpage to the LDS searched
webpages.
06) Anyone may create of join LDS based mailing list.
All for free, as is admission to any of 3600 Family
History Centers..True, you pay for film rental,
but the FHC will probably operate at a small loss,
mine does..
The data is as reliable as the submitter, where it is
extracted, it's quite reliable, otherwise treat it as
a clue..

What ever you get from LDS, I'd be very leery of. When they made
a grab for
names it would appear the various people went out collecting and had no idea
who or what they were doing. I have a relative who they have attributed to
another family altogether, not even with the same spelling, and it has driven
me crazy. To get this corrected is such a hassle, as there are virtually no
official records left, most being lost to fire and other disasters. This
will always stand incorrect and it makes me very angry.
Good luck.
