Hi Ruth,
Thank you! The Mormon volunteer who transcribed that entry did it accurately;
the enumerator in 1880 was off.
The census entry reminded me of a cartoon I saw in a magazine years ago. The
cartoon took place in a living room. A man with a woman on each side of him
sat on a couch. Opposite the three was a second man, in a chair, with a
briefcase. Second man said "Great Western Life doesn't care that you have two
wives, Mr. Jones. We just want to make sure you have enough life insurance to
cover both of them."
Ted
I question the information found on the LDS Family History
Library Film.
Charles Henry Cady was the son of Charles Culver Cady and Lizzie Glidden
(CADY GENEALOGY; Revised and Updated, 1991). Charles Culver had a brother
Henry Gordon (Charles Henry's uncle) who resided in Pine Bluff, AR. He
was married to a Josephine Ruffner. When Charles Culver was
institionalized at Osawatomie, KS Lizzie and her two sons, Charles Henry
and George Culver, left Kansas and moved to Pine Bluff where Henry Gordon
lived. I would guess the census enumerator made a mistake listing both
Josephine and Lizzie as Henry's wives.
George Culver Cady was my husband's grandfather.

Charles Henry and his dad swapped first and middle names sometimes. The
parents'
birthplaces show that the enumerator got his data from someone besides the
person.

This was the first time I'd seen someone with two wives on the LDS 1880, so I
looked Henry up on the census images. Lizie is right under Josephine and has a
ditto matk under Josephine's relation, which is "Wife".
Possible explanations -
1) Josephine had died and they forgot to put "Deceased" on her
2) Henry was a Mormon
3) Josephine was a sister-in-law and the enumerator put "Wife" by mistake. If
the "OH" for her birthplace and her parents' BP are accurate, she
couldn't be
Henry's sister.
