Most surname Cadyâs who trace their ancestry back to before 1840 and
New England are related. The Irish potato famine resulted in many new
Cadyâs (and similar names) arriving in America, some of these listed
being born in England or Canada but were Irish. If you do not know,
think of starting with a Y-DNA test, it appears many New England Cadyâs
are Haplotype âIâ (Nordic) and others are Haplotype âRâ (Gaelic). To
add to the confusing the Cady surname is thought to be Gaelic in
origin, but here are as many as 60 possible origins for the surname.
The name originated in the Anglo-Norman period, which per-dates early
English and Scottish. Most list it in Suffolk County, England in areas
known to be settled by Clan Anglo and later by Danes (Vikings), both of
who originated in the same area of Denmark. The Anglo's arrival after
660, which was long after the Romans had forced out most Celts
(Gaelic). I have often wondered if an Irish monk stationed in Bury St
Edmunds Abbey gave the name to a local family, which is as good a guess
as any of the other origins I have seen. The name is likely related to
Cade (Cadee) pronounced Kay-dee, and not the french Cade pronounced
Ca-id which is more prevalent in Sussex, England. I note two infamous
Cade/Cadyâs, Jack Cady the revolutionary leader of England and William
Cady a highwayman, of the surnames being interchangeable. It was not
until the 1800's that the surnames became separate. even now the
surname Cady is far more common in America than England where as Cade
is more common in England than America.
