In Census records from 1880 and older, the Surname Cady is often
misspelled or mistranscribed (up to 50%). Searching by similar names or
even soundex might not be good enough. I have searched by initials,
wife's first name, and even by neighbors. Many families moved as often
as every five years, so searches by DOB and State of Birth might narrow
down the search. In older Census searches, some records are just not
there, I have found some in one census and still there two census
later, but not listing between, especially in Upstate New York and in
the Northwestern Territories. In Connecticut records in some locations
have been lost. I found many people listed in the âHistory of Windham
Countyâ that are not in the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Churches.
I like to look at the history of an area, but it is the survivors who
write the history and many times I was looking at someone who left.
Upstate New York was popular after the revolution, but why settle for
forty acres and a mortgage when you can move west and get up to 160
acres for a fraction of the cost. I saw some counties grew from a few
hundred to ten times that and then lose half their population within a
decade. Of late, I have found âFind a Graveâ to be helpful, especially
if the surname has several possible listings. The key sometimes is to
look at the Technology. Early migration was by water, then road and
canal or keel boat and then steam boat. Railroads wipe out the canals.
Travel by wagon was time consuming, and although many took the Oregon
Trail, the fastest way to California was by steamboat to New Orleans
and then across Mexico or Panama and up the West Coast.
