Hi Megan, Welcome to the club. Genealogy is a fascinating hobby to us
geezers. We may be able to tell you a little about your family, but you
will have to help us. You posted a reply to a query from 2004. The
chance of that person still being alive, still interested, and still
using that e-mail address is small. You'd do better to start a new
thread, and to give us some details. First, most of us won't reveal
things about living people, if we can help it. Anyone in the world,
including all those internet scam artists in Nigeria, can read this
board, and if they knew details (birth date and place, for instance)
about you, or your parents, or your grandparents, they might use those
facts to steal money from you, your friends, and your relatives. I
found this in a collection on
Ancestry.com: U.S. Phone and Address
Directories, 1993-2002 Name: W R (Butch) Cady Residence: 1997 -
Columbia Falls, Montana You knew him as Butch, but his legal name is
what would be on his census entries, marriage license, birth
certificate, obituary and so forth. "W R" isn't very helpful, and the
only Cady in Flathead County in the 1940 census is a William J, born
about 1878, so, unless your grandfather lived to be 119 years old - or
the family kept the phone under his name - that isn't him. That brings
up a second point; we usually write towns as town, county, state:
Columbia Falls, Flathead, Montana That helps when there are two or more
towns of the same name in a state. (Arkansas, Georgia and Michigan all
have 4 towns named "Lakeside".) It also helps when they didn't really
live in the town, but went into it for supplies every two weeks. Please
start a new thread. If your grandfather "Butch" has passed on, ask
about him; if not, ask him who his parents were and ask about them. The
more of these facts you can provide, the better a chance you have of
getting some good replies: Name (maiden name for women) Birth date or
date estimate (even a decade helps) Birth place (town, COUNTY, state)
Marriage date or date estimate (even a decade helps) Marriage place
(town, COUNTY, state) Spouse's name (maiden name for women) (All
spouses, dates and places, if multiple marriages) Death date or date
estimate (even a decade helps) Death place (town, COUNTY, state) If you
want even more advice, plus a subtle joke,
http://www.tedpack.org/goodpost.html has it.
