Unless you are exchanging details about living people, posting is generally better than
e-mailing.
1) Your e-mail is going to change every year or two, if you are average. Your 4th cousin,
the one who has the family Bible and the love letters from 1830, written in a spidery hand
and tied with a faded pink ribbon, isn't going to be able to contact you via e-mail if
you change ISPs and don't post a follow-up to every post you've made that has your
e-mail in it.
Ancestry - and GenForum, Ancestry's main rival in the Query Board business - both have
an automated registration that shows your current address, if you choose to, and lets you
change it at one stroke.
2) Google won't pick up e-mail messages. It will pick up query board posts.
3) Query board posts may outlive you; you may get hit by a bus or take up fly fishing, but
people who read the query boards can benefit from your research long after you are
finished with genealogy.
