I was in touch with the author of the book on California history dealing with the Donner Party several years ago. She would probably be interested in the conclusion that might be drawn from the dates you are giving -- do you have one for Charles Lewis's first marriage?
It was the Junior Charles Lewis that I am most interested -- I've had a lot of stuff on the Senior for some time now - since the Charles part if for my ancester, Charles and Janatje Helmer Cady in Montgomery, Co., NY -- they were said to have had 15 children and we're still missing a couple -
The son of Charles that we descend from was Ezekiel, b. 19 Apr 1791 in Fonda or Caughnawaga, Montgomery, NY, m. Adeline Carley, do Albert A. and Hannah Covey Carley 23 June 1818 in Annsville/Camden, Oneida, NY - this couple came to IL in 1837 via the Erie Canal thence by ox cart to Chicago where the settled about 45 miles NW of the city, in a town that they were instrumental in naming - Palatine, in Cook County - for the area of their childhoods and first meeting. Many of their descendants and relatives also settled in Eastern Iowa and in Michigan.
The Wards were early ancestors of Adeline Carley's - and there are cousins of hers teaching at Ann Arbor - one of whom - Ward Bissell - just retired as head of the University Fine Art Department. Another who spells his name Curley is still on the faculty but in a different department.
Ezekiel's oldest brother was named David Studdert - no one spelled very well back in those days - and one of his descendants lived with another cousin descendant of Ezekiel's a block away from my Grandmother in Chicago when I was growing up.
I'm very certain that the Charles Lewis of the Donner Party would have been a son of Stoddard's son Charles by his first wife, the Sarah Unknown and that her last name was probably Lewis.
My Book Club just had a reviewer report on the life of Elizabeth Cady Stanton - and I told her that there would probably be another Cady descendant in the audience -- sure enough, one of your Henry's descendants held up her hand!
Good luck with your research - cousin!

Hi Judith,
Thanks for your reply!!!
There is a Charles L. Cady who was one of the rescues of the Donner party. You can read about this Charles here.
http://www.utahcrossroads.org/DonnerParty/Rescuers.htm#Cady
My Charles Lewis Cady was born 28 Jul 1791 in Brookfield, Worcester Co, Mass. He died 20 Sep 1874 in Flushing, Genesee Co., Michigan. He was married twice and both wives were named Sarah. With the first Sarah who was born about 1796 in Rhode Island he had at least 4 children
1. James P. Cady born NY 1815 not proven he is a son
but lived in 1860 census in Washington, Van Buren Co.,Iowa and also in 1870 census in Harrisville, Alcona Co., Michigan where Charles was also with his family and second wife Sarah Jacobs. James P. Cady was still living here in 1880 census (Harrisville) after that and before 1860 I cannot find him.
2; Ervin J. "Irvin" Cady born 21 Dec 1825 NY died
21 Feb 1909 also in Flushing, Genesee Co., Michigan and proven to be son of this Charles by Ervins Death certificate info.
3. Henry Cady born 07 Nov 1827 in NY
died 15 Jul 1898 Georgia
4. Deborah Cady born about 1838 in NY and living with Chalres L. Cady born 1791 and his second wife Sarah Jacobs Cady and their family in 1850 census in Uniontown, Fayette Co., Pennsyania. I asume she is daughter of first wife Sarah. I do not find her after the 1860 census, she must have married or died.
James P. Cady born 1815 has to be related some how, but don't know if he is son to Charles born 1791 and his first wife Sarah or if he might be a nephew. Since he lived near Charles in the 1860 and 1870 census and was also living near widow Sarah Jacobs Cady in 1880 in Harrisville, he must be related. Just don't know how, or where is is before 1860 and after 1880
Thanks again,
Karen

It seems extremely likely that the Charles Lewis in the above notes is the son of the Senior Charles Lewis Cady -- an ironic note - my first husband's family owned a gold mine and a large piece of property in the Sierra Nevadas of CA where the Rawlins Dam is now ,and part of the Donner Trail ran through this land. There were Cadys listed in the 1855 census of the gold towns in that area -- Nevada County. And my daughter lived for a while in San Rafael where Charles was also known to have lived - If I'd only known.

Both my husband and I are descendants of the Charles Cady (Jane Helmer), who was a brother of Stoddard Brimfield's and we have been trying to place Charles Lewis for some time now. Our Charles and Stoddard also had a brother David (Lois Fawcett) who had a daughter Sarah, but I have not seen other children attributed to them; a brother John, (Abigail Stoddard Cady, mother of Charles and Stoddard, was the daughter of John and Sarah Camp Stoddard); and possibly a brother Richard.
There was a Charles L. Cady who was a member of the second rescue team for the Donner Party. This from my notes: http://www.utahcrossroads.org/DonnerParty/Rescuers.htm
Charles Lewis Cady
Age: 23
Second Relief
Charles L. Cady was born in Buffalo, New York, on 19 Sept 1824. James F. Reed refers to Cady, Nicholas Clark, and Charles Stone as "the boys"-- young, active men who arrived at the camps 24 hours before the other members of the relief.
After the Donner disaster, Cady established a courier service to deliver mail between San Francisco and Sutter's Fort via Sonoma and Sausalito and in 1848-49 kept a store in Coloma in partnership with John Shannon. In the spring of 1879 Cady was in the Calistoga area and visited W. C. Graves, who sent information from Cady to historian C. F. McGlashan."
He is said to have died in Oklahoma Territory in 1876 but no one has been able to identify his parentage.

Hi Patricia,
Yes that is my line too. I have a lot of information on Charles Lewis Cady and his second wife Sarah Jacobs.
This James P. Cady and wife Mary were living near Chalres Lewis and Sarah in the 1860 census in Washington, Van Buren Co. Iowa. James P. and Mary followed Charles Lewis to Harrisville, Alcona Co., Michigan and appear there in 1870 and 1880 census. Charles died in 1874 but wife Sarah Jacobs Cady is still living in Harrisville in 1880 census, living with her daughter and son in law.
I don't have a Sarah listed as a child of Charles Lewis Cady.
I do have another son listed for him and this has been verified by the death record of the son. This son was Ervin J. "Irvin" Cady born 21 Dec 1825 in New York.
I don't have much on the first Sarah, wife of Charles Lewis, only that she was born 1796 in Rhode Island.
I have Lots of info on Charles Lewis Cady and his second wife, including all kinds of documentation.
Daughter Ellen Cady was my great great great grandmother.

I have James P. Cady born 1815 in New York living in Harrisville, Alcona Co., Michigan in the 1880 census. Living with him is wife Mary born about 1832. Living with them is Elizabeth Ward born about 1835 and John Ward born about 1843. John and Elizabeth are shown as children of Mary.
James Cady and Mary Cady minus Elizabeth and John Ward, were living in Harrisville, Alcona Co., Michigan in the 1870 census.
I believe that James is the son of Charles Lewis Cady born 28 Jul 1791 in Brookfield, Worcester Co, Mass and his first wife Sarah.
Charles and second wife Sarah and their family were also living in Harrisville in the 1870 census. Charles died in 1874 in Flushing, Genesee Co., Michigan. Sarah appears with daughter and son in law in the 1880 census in Harrisville.
Can anyone verify if James is the son of Charles????
Also where was James before the 1870 census and after the 1880 census.
Thanks so much !!!
