John M. Cade listed as Cade, Jno age 15 born in IL, in 1880 Census-Jasper Co., Galena
twp., MO (west of Joplin) occupation Mining, father's birthplace IL and Mother's
OH. Mother Mary E.Smith b abt1845 had remarried to a Wm Parris b abt 1844 with their
oldest child 11yrs. in 1880, so was possibly a widow or divorced by 1869 from John's
father and Mary and John were living in IN where Mary and Wim Parris child was born in
1869. Living w/ the Parris was Wm Parris's father in law(Mary's father?) a
Sam'l Smith b abt. 1817 and Wm Parris's brother in law Geo Smith b abt. 1852.
John M. Cade had married an Emma Eckel b abt 1871 and married 19 Sept. 1886, when 15 or
so. She died less than 2 yrs later on 19 Ap, 1888 with medical and doctor bills for last
illness and burial bills paid by her mother Dora Eckel(herself a recent widow of 5 months
with 3 other minor children) with no mention of John M Cade in any of the probate
papers--only Dora. Dora when signing last of husband's probate papers for her minor
children, began signing her last name as Cade in 1890. What Cade did she marry? and she
or Cade were not found in any further census records in MO or ARK or KS areas after
that--Don't know if minor children went to live with relatives--as husband's
uncles, grandfather refused to talk about mother/grmother Dora and very little about
William A. Eckel(father/grfather). Really trying to track Dora-- but sometimes you have
to work sideways. Did Dora have anymore children(she would have been abt. 43 in 1890 when
name was shown as Dora Cade)? Did she!
marry her son in law-20 yrs. her junior? All the Eckel family papers and bible burned in
the 1950's--so no help there.
On John M Cade and Emma Eckel's marriage license both listed Sherwood, MO as place of
residence(it is no longer there, but is directly West of Joplin.)
