I wish to provide an updated profile of William Cade and his wife, Elizabeth Smith,
because of new information found regarding Elizabeth Smith. There is slim to no evidence
she was the daughter of Richard Smith, of Cumberland Co., NC and there is no evidence that
this Richard Smith is the same Richard Smith, son of Richard and Agnes (Cocke) Smith.
The ancestry and details regarding the life of William Cade are accurate.
William CADE
- born 24 Aug 1735 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., VA
- son of Stephen and Mary Cade and grandson of Robert and Susannah (Crump) Cade
- died before the ennumeration of the 1790 Census
- served in the Revolutionary Army
- accompanied his family to NC as a small child
married (ca 1762)
Elizabeth [SMITH]
- born, say about 1740/4
- It is speculated she was the daughter of Richard Smith, as a son was named "Richard
Smith Cade." A Richard Smith is found residing in Cumberland Co., NC. Deed records
dating from the early nineteenth century list Elizabeth Cade as the sister of Montcalm and
Noble Smith. There is no evidence to tie the abovementioned Richard Smith with Richard
Smith, son of Richard and Agnes (Cocke) Smith, of Virginia. It is not entirely clear that
the deed reference showing Elizabeth Cade as the sister of Montcalm and Noble Smith refers
to the same Elizabeth Cade, widow of William Cade. So, Elizabeth (Smith) Cade's
ancestry is unknown and it's not entirely proven that her maiden surname was Smith.
- alive, 1820, when the 1820 Census for Cumberland Co., NC was ennumerated.
The list below of William Cade's children is partially a reconstruction. Harllee's
"Kinfolks" provides a listing of children, but provides no proof. It appears to
be a reconstruction. Harllee's identification of the daughter, Anna, appears to be
questionable, as the chronology is questionable, based on an approximation of her birth
date calculated on her probable age at marriage.
Children:
1. Mary Cade, born about 1763, married 1782, Charles Wilson. Their Bible names her
parents. Charles Wilson was residing near Elizabeth Cade in the 1820 Cumberland Co., NC
Census.
2. Richard Smith Cade, born about 1766. No further information. Identified by Harllee
as a son of William and Elizabeth Cade.
3. William Cade, born about 1769, said to have married Margaret Alston. Identified by
Harllee as a son of William and Elizabeth Cade.
4. Wiley Cade, born about 1772. No further information. Identified by Harlee as a son
of William and Elizabeth Cade.
5. James Weddell Cade, born 25 Nov 1755, m. Margaret McDaniel. Identified by Harllee as
a son of William and Elizabeth Cade.
