The Dictionary of English Surnames has several possibilities. The Key is the pronunciation
as the French Cade (Ka-id) is a wine barrel, (Stout person) The English Cade (Kai-dee) us
most likely a first name common in Northern England before 10041066 (Reign of Edward the
Confessor), There are several variations in spelling and pronunciation, The name only
became standardized since coming to America. My surname is Cady (Kai-Dee), oddly early
Britain's had no "C".and even in Old English Cae was pronounced Kei. Most
authorities offer their best guess, but no one claims to know for sure. The surname is
far more common in England than America.
